GriffithsDoctor of Humane LettersA media ethicist with more than 40 years of journalistic experience, RichardGriffiths’ global impact on editorial integrity, free speech, and media access togovernment has exemplified his belief that independent journalism is essentialto a working democracy, a value that is now more crucial than ever.Originally from Britain, Mr. Griffiths began a lifelong career in journalism asa college radio reporter at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Heworked at several radio and television stations before becoming a producer forCBS News, where he took on many global assignments included reporting onSouth African apartheid, the fall of Baby Doc Duvalier in Haiti, and NASA’sSpace Shuttle program.At CNN, Mr. Griffiths began producing documentaries before overseeing “TheRow,” the global network’s editorial quality control operation for more than twodecades. There, he covered the events of the Arab Spring and led the network’scoverage of the September 11 terrorist attacks. His special reports contributedcritical information to the public conversation on a phenomenally wide rangeof issues, including substandard care given to children in adult emergencyrooms, the 1992 European Community deadline, the changing workplace, andthe increasing tabloidization of US media. Additionally, he provided editorialoversight of CNN’s investigative journalism and the network’s fact-checkingoperations during the 2008, 2012, and 2016 presidential elections.Beyond his extensive work in the media, Mr. Griffiths has consulted on andtaught journalism ethics, investigative reporting, and editorial managementthroughout the country, including at Franklin Pierce University, and aroundthe world. His work included travels to Australia, Jamaica, Indonesia, thePhilippines, Switzerland, and Poland, and often places where freedom of thepress is not the norm.In recent years, Mr. Griffiths has focused on continuing education for localjournalists as president emeritus of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation.He also continues to lecture on editorial ethics and media trust at University ofGeorgia and at the University of North Carolina.4
Candidate for the Honorary DegreeJoyce MaynardDoctor of Humane LettersA prolific novelist, memoirist, and journalist for more than four decades, JoyceMaynard is renowned for upholding the truth and inspiring others to do thesame.A native of New Hampshire, Ms. Maynard began publishing her stories inmagazines when she was just thirteen years old. She first came to nationalattention with the publication of her New York Times cover story, “An EighteenYear-Old Looks Back on Life”, in 1972, when she was a freshman at YaleUniversity. Since then, she has been a reporter and columnist for The New YorkTimes, a syndicated newspaper columnist whose “Domestic Affairs” columnappeared in over fifty papers nationwide, a regular contributor to NationalPublic Radio and national magazines including Vogue, and The New York TimesMagazine. She is a longtime performer with The Moth. She is the author ofeighteen books, including the New York Times bestselling novels, Labor Day andTo Die For (both adapted for film), Under the Influence and the memoirs, AtHome in the World and The Best of Us.In addition to her many books, Ms. Maynard has authored book reviews andcommentaries for Mademoiselle and Harrowsmith, wielding truth on topicsranging from racism to parenthood. In 1986, Ms. Maynard helped lead theopposition to constructing the nation’s first high-level nuclear waste dump inNew Hampshire, a campaign she described in a New York Times cover story.Ms. Maynard is the founder of Write by the Lake, a week-long workshop on theart and craft of memoir, held every year since 2001 at Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.This workshop helps countless people in the U.S. and abroad to become writers.Her bravery, energy, and passion for the truth have helped others face their owndifficult truths.Ms. Maynard’s latest novel, Count the Ways —the story of a marriage and adivorce, and the children who survived it— was published by William Morrowin July, 2021. She is currently at work on a book about her return to YaleUniversity two and a half years ago as an undergraduate, forty-eight years afterleaving at age 18.5
The Honorable Walter R. PetersonCitizen Leader AwardThe Honorable Walter R. Peterson Citizen Leader Award was created tohonor the late Governor Peterson’s lifelong commitment to public serviceand higher education in the state of New Hampshire. He served two termsas the Governor of New Hampshire and was Franklin Pierce University’ssecond President from 1975-1995. He also was President Emeritus ofthe University until his passing in 2011. This award, presented at theannual Commencement Exercises, is intended to acknowledge and tohonor an individual for his or her extraordinary commitment to publicservice, selfless contributions to higher education, sense of humor, andhigh moral character — all characteristics of the award’s namesake.Previous Recipients:May 15, 2021 — Former Chief Justice John T. 2022 Citizen Leader Award WinnerJames T. BrettIn 1996 Mr. Brett was appointed president and chief executive officer of The NewEngland Council, the nation’s oldest regional business association. The Councilis an alliance of schools, hospitals, corporations, and other private organizationspromoting economic growth and quality of life in the region. In this role, he hasbeen a leading voice for public policy issues on health care, education, financialservices, and sustainable energy throughout New England.The New England Council’s Higher Education Committee focuses on initiativesand policy advocacy aimed at expanding access to higher education, developing ahigh-skilled talent pipeline to meet regional employer needs, investing in research,and supporting students to achieve their educational aspirations.A graduate of American University, with advanced degrees from Harvard andSuffolk University, Mr. Brett served for more than 15 years as a member of theMassachusetts House of Representatives, where he held an array of importantleadership positions, earning formal honors on many occasions for outstandingpublic service.Most recently, he was recently appointed by President Biden as the chair of thePresident’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, a role he hasserved in previous administrations.7
