COVER STORYPierce College alum helpsothersfind their purposeBy Kate Frerichs“My experience at PierceCollege was just phenomenal,and my fear of being ‘theold guy’ in class proved tobe a wonderful learningexperience for me,” Wilkinssaid. “It would have beena horrible thing to letsomething like that fearprevent me from pursuingmy goals.”When Ronald Wilkinswalked through thedoors at Pierce College, hewasn’t sure what to expectfrom this new chapter in hislife. He had already enjoyeda successful career in retailmanagement, and gaineda wealth of life experiencealong the way. Yet when hisformer employer decided tosell the business, he knew thetime was right to explore newcareer possibilities.After a little career counselingand a lot of reflection, herealized his true strengthslie in helping people. Heeventually settled onpursuing a career as analcohol and drug abusecounselor, and searched forthe best program in the areathat would help him reachhis goals. “I shopped aroundquite a bit, and it was clearto me that Pierce Collegehad the Cadillac of programs,”Wilkins said.He enrolled at Pierce College,but not without reservation.Wilkins was unsure whatit would be like to attendcollege as an adult, but itdidn’t take him long to realizethe benefits of having suchdiversity in the classroom.here to save everybody. But Iam here to listen to my clients,and let them know that theyare valuable.
