Outline of Hitachi Scholarship Foundation's Program 2013HITACHI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMThis program is offered to the university staffs who wish to study at Japanese graduateschools for Master's or Doctoral Course in the area of science and technology andintend to contribute to their university for promotion of higher education aftercompletion of study in Japan. Under this program, we have invited 165 universitystaffs since 1985.'HITACHI RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMThis program intends to encourage the university staffs having keen interest inconducting post-doctoral research in the area of science and technology to enhancetheir professional backgrounds and promote academic collaboration through buildingmutual human network with Japanese universities and/or institutions. We haveinvited 142 university staffs since 1986.KOMAI FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMThis program started in 1989 under the auspices of late Mr. K. Komai, the firstChairman of the Hitachi Scholarship Foundation, to encourage interactions betweenSoutheast Asian countries and Japan. The program, therefore, intends to encouragethe university staffs having keen interest in conducting study and research to enhancetheir academic and professional backgrounds in the area of social and cultural sciencerelated to Japan. 5) Motivation to study in Japan6) Proposed plan of study7) Academic necessity of the applicant to undertake hislher study and research atthe graduate school in Japan8) Communication skill* .As the foreign students who conduct their graduate studies and research in thefield of science and technology in Japan are normally required to submit theirthesis in English unless they have enough Japanese language proficiency,proficiency of English language above 530 points of TOEFL (Test of Englishas a Foreign Language) is preferred.9) The applicant's health and general aptitude for the environmental conditions ofacademic and social life in Japan.10) For the purpose of avoiding plural scholarship award to one applicant and inorder to offer more opportunities to other applicants, The Foundation will notselect as a grantee of the Hitachi, Scholarship any. person who has beenawarded Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship.This policy shall be applied to those who wish to apply for the Japanese. 9.LiaisonThe grantee should keep close contact with the Foundation and keep them infonnedof any change ofhislher address or other pertinent matters.10. ReportThe grantee is required to submit to the head and/or dean of the faculty of his/heruniversity in home country a progress report of hislher research and other activitiesevery two months with a copy to the host scientist and the Foundation.When his/her research is presented for publication or dissemination, theFoundation's support should be acknowledged in an appropriate way.A copy of such publication or offprint is requested to be sent to the Foundation.11. InsuranceThe Foundation will buy the following insUrance for the period from the date ofthe grantee's departure from hislher home country until the date he/she is admittedas a student of the graduate school or until the date helshe arranges similarinsurance whichever comes earlier.The grantee is required to arrange suchinsurance with the graduate school by himselflherself after he/she is admitted as astudent.illness contracted before the grantee's arrival in Japan, chroniG diseaseand dental care will not be covered by the insurance to be bought by theFoundation. 15 million1) Death from injury:Up to 2 million2) Treatment of injury: 2 miilion3) Death from illness:Up to 2 million4) Treatment of illness:12. Japanese LanguageIt is important for foreign students to know and understand Japanese language to-such. an extent that they can pursue their study and research at the graduate schooland spend social life in Japan.Some Japanese graduate schools require Japaneselanguage proficiency to certain level.The Foundation will, therefore, support thegrantee to study Japanese language for half a year before commencement of eitherthe Master's Course or the Doctoral Course as described in Clause 2.62013 HITACHI SCHOLARSHIP
13. Compliance with Laws and RegulationsThe grantee must abide by the laws and regulations of Japan.14.Suspension or Termination of the ScholarshipThe grantees of the Hitachi Scholarship Award are expected to devote themselvesfull-time to their studies and research described in their applications and anyemployment in Japan during the term ofthe scholarship may not be accepted.The scholarship will be suspended or terminated if the Foundation judges that theforegoing terms and conditions are not observed in good faith or in the followingcases:14-1 When it becomes impossible to continue study or research because of illness orother reasons14-2 Poor result ofstudy record14-3 Misconduct72013 HlTAQII SCHOLARSHIP
GUIDE TO THE HITACm RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPThe Hitachi Scholarship Foundation (''Foundation'') provides the scholars andresearchers in Southeast Asian countries with opportunities to conduct theirpost-doctoral and cooperative research in the field of science and technology atJapanese universities or research institutes under the following conditions.1. Term of FeBowslUpI-lOne (1) to three (3) months for a short-term fellowship1-2 Four (4) to ten (10) months for a long-term fellowship* 1be fellowship begins on the day ofthe grantee's arrival in Japan and ends onthe day ofdeparture :from Japan. The fellowship cannot be eXtended.2.Coilteats of J'eRoW8hipThe Foundation will support the following costs and expenses. No fmancialsupport is provided to bis/her family or dependent.2-1 For a short-term fellowship1) Travel expenses: Economy class round-trip airfare between the nearestairport of the grantee's university and the airport in Japan, the travelexpenses betw n the airport m Japan and the place of grantee's researchaffiliation, and the travel expenses to visit the office ofthe Foundation.2) Maintenance allowance: 15,000 a day* This rate is applied to the number of nights the grantee stays in Japan.3) Research travel allowance: At cost but up to 1 00,000* If the grantee wishes to receive this. allowance, the travel plan and therecommendation letter of the Japanese host scientist should. be submitted tothe Foundation for review and approval in advance. 4.Preparation for Entry to JapanThe grantee is required to obtain a valid entry visa from Japanese embassy orconsulate before coming to Japan.4-1 For a short-term fellowshipThe grantee is suggested to contact Japanese embassy or consulate to confrrmthe procedure, including the documents required, to obtain the visa.4-2 For along-term fellowshipThe grantee is required to submit the following to the Foundation to obtain theCertificate of Eligibility which is necessary for hislher application ofthe visa.It usually takes one (1) month to obtain this certificate.1) A copy of passport2) Three (3) copies ofthe photograph with 3cm x 4cm3) Record ofpast entry into I stay in Japan (incl. number oftimes of entry)4) Certificate of university staff5) Ph.D. certificate6) List ofpublications7) Copy of "Letter of Award" issued by the Foundation5.Visit to the FoundationThe grantee is requested to drop by the office of the- Foundation in'fokyo beforegoing to the place of grantee's research affiliation.He/she is also requested tocome to the office of the Foundation to report the result of research briefly onthe way back to hislher home country.6.AccommodationThe grantee is responsible for finding hislheraccommodation.As some universities and institutions have their own accommodations, it isrecommended to inquire the host scientist about their availability.7.Bank AccountThe grantee is requested, to the extent applicable, to open an account at aJapanese bank upon his/her arrival and inform the Foundation of the bankaccount details sending a copy ofbankbook.42013 HITACHI RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
8.Residence card (for a long-term fellowship only)The grantee will be issued a resident card at Narita or Haneda Airport.
