Raychem heating cables are installed on roofsand gutters to prevent hazards and propertydamage caused by ice buildup. Spring clamp terminals provide reliable connection and allow easyreentry. Both systems automatically adjust their heatoutput in response to ambient temperatures, forbetter reliability and energy efficiency. Pyrotenax mineral insulated cables areinstalled in concrete and asphalt and provide aconstant heat output. The power connection installs in less than 10 minutes, usingonly standard cable-stripping tools and a screwdriver. High-intensity LED lights are available with our power connections and end seals to provide visual monitoring of systempower and continuity.7

Innovative Heat-Tracing TechnologiesCopperbus wireTyco Thermal Controls self-regulating and power-limiting systemsconsist of insulated electric heating cables with voltage appliedto two parallel bus wires. This enables the cables to be cut toany length, then spliced and “teed” in the field.Self-regulating technologyThis technology was used in designing the two types of selfregulating, polymeric heating elements illustrated at right. In both the monolithic (solid core) and fiber wrap products, theheating element is made of polymer mixed with conductivecarbon. This special formulation of materials creates an electricalpath for conducting current between the parallel bus wires alongthe entire cable length.Braidedtin-coppershield andouter jacketHow self-regulation works in the Raychem conductive-polymer heaters:Cold Pipe: In responseto cold, the core orfiber contracts microscopically opening upelectrical paths.XTV heatingcables featurea fiber-wrapconstructionthat can easilybe cut backfor powerconnection andtermination.Warm Pipe: In responseto warmth, the core orfiber begins to expandmicroscopically disrupting the electrical tHot Pipe: The core orfiber expands enoughto disrupt almost allof the electrical paths.Braidedtin-coppershield andouter jacketConstant WattagePowerResistanceCopperbus wireTemperature8InsulatingjacketBTV and QTVRheating cablesshare a similarconstruction asillustrated at right. In each heating cable, the number of electrical paths betweenthe bus wires changes in response to temp erature fluctuations. As the temperature surrounding the heater decreases, theconductive core or fiber contracts microscopically. This contractiondecreases electrical resistance and creates numerous electricalpaths between the bus wires. Current flows across these pathsto warm the core or fiber. As the temperature rises, the core or fiber expands microscopically. This expansion increases electrical resistance and the numberof electrical paths decreases. The heater automatically begins toreduce its power output.Selfregulatingconductivecore heatingelementConstant WattageTemperatureThe graphs above illustrate the response of self-regulatingheating cables to changes in temperature. As thetemperature rises, electrical resistance increases, and ourheaters reduce their power output.
