General InformationIntended AudiencePhysicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, nurses,surgical technologists, radiologic technologists, occupational andphysical therapists and medical office staff in all specialties.Program OverviewThe sole objective of this symposium is to educate all physiciansand healthcare personnel regarding the current diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary fashion.Through this CME activity, the participant should better understandtheories and facts related to the development of breast cancer,current imaging and diagnostic modalities, surgical treatment,adjuvant therapies of chemotherapy and radiation, breastreconstruction, and managing patients with breast cancer. Thisactivity will also educate the participants about breast cancer froma multidisciplinary approach. This symposium hopes to helpphysicians and healthcare personnel reach a better understandingrelated to all aspects of breast cancer and how we all maycontribute to help individuals overcome this disease whilemaximizing quality of life.Educational Objectives Define the incidence and types of premalignant breast diseaseand breast cancer. Examine risk factors that impact the development of breast cancer. Recognize the radiological contribution of mammography, ultra sound, MRI, PET scanning and new technology to the diagnosis,treatment, and post-treatment surveillance of breast cancer. Differentiate indications and techniques of tissue sampling. Describe how histologic findings are related to definitivetherapy for breast cancer. Explore the role of Primary Care, nutrition and alternativemedicine in the assessment and treatment of breast cancer. Examine breast conserving and non breast conserving surgicaltreatment options for breast cancer treatment as well as therole of sentinel lymph node sampling. Describe the therapeutic options for chemotherapy. Discuss the therapeutic design, options, and timing for partialand whole breast radiation. Compare the potential benefits and pitfalls related to postmastectomybreast reconstructive techniques in relationship to adjuvant therapy. Identify the psychosocial issues related to breast cancer treat ment, including methods to support patients with these issues. Explain the molecular biology of breast cancer in relation totargeted therapy. Discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to thetreatment of breast cancer as it relates to nursing, mid-levelproviders, and physicians, in treatment coordination, andcommunication. Review the controversial issues involved in hormonereplacement therapy and molecular genetic testing.
