Even today DELTA producesabout 200 surface grinders a year for atotal of over 20,000 units sold worldwide, delivering the widest offer on the market. However, it was at the end of the 1960sthat DELTA took a fundamental step forits further development when the firstflat surface grinding machines were designed and built featuring high performance, reliability but also excellent value formoney. These machines already includedthe “Mackensen” hydrodynamic spindleas a standard feature, a technology thatcombines high accuracy and durability, in1955Start of productionof the first surfacegrinders1968MAXI 3000/1100 CNCaddition to fully hydrostatic axes which– it is worth underscoring – guaranteezero wear and the elimination of slidingfriction. DELTA machines proved so successful on the Italian and internationalmarkets that at the end of the 1970s, inorder to face the strong market demandStart of production of thefirst flat surface grindingmachines1983appropriately, the company decided tomove to modern and larger headquarters(3,000 sq.m) in Cura Carpignano, near Pavia. The transfer of operations to the newheadquarters also offered the opportunity to innovate the company, for examplewith the adoption of computers for theChoice of the travellingcolumn design and launch ofthe MAXI line2004The production of the new highlyautomated ELLE line begins, equipped withintegral enclosure on requestmanagement of warehousing, productionand accounting tasks, while the purchaseof new NC machine tools and the use ofmodern equipment allowed the optimization of production cycles. In those years, the engineering department of DELTAalso started the first research activities aimed at product evolution and innovationthanks to the introduction of electronicsand the first control units. Here comes the travelling columnIn the first half of the 1980s, DELTA’s range of flat surface grinding machines wasenriched with new large-size models featuring high production capacity: the Maxifamily with travelling column. “In thoseyears – recalls Adriano Ceri, President ofDELTA – increasingly hard materials beganto be used for moulds. Therefore, in orderto meet this need, we decided to equipour grinding machines with a travellingcolumn, a solution which until then couldbe seen only on milling and boring machines.”Today, the travelling column is characterized by a structure entirely made of stabilized Meehanite cast iron which eliminates – right from the start – all stabilityproblems related to the crosswise travel ofthe head that normally occur in grindingmachines with moving head, where theflexion increases along with the outreachof the head, as well as the related compensation problems. In those years, this product innovation led2005The MINI machine is launched: thetravelling column becomes availableon small surface grinding machinesto a major growth of the company business, so that in 1991 DELTA obtained thequality mark of the Association of ItalianManufacturers of Machine Tools (UCIMU)for the organizational level reached andfor the quality of its constantly improvedand modernized products. Numerous andimportant deliveries to many industrialsectors testify to the quality of the DELTAbrand, that over the years had become areal benchmark in terms of seriousnessand reliability both at a technological andat a financial level. The company is in factclassified Rating 1, the maximum level ofreliability, by Dun &Bradstreet. The 1990s marked a great growth periodfor DELTA also thanks to a profitable research activity aimed at product innovationand the development of new projectswith the application of modern CAD systems. Of great importance in 1995, 1996and 1998 were the studies for the optimization of mechanical structures, based onthe finite element method, conducted inThe Mackensen hydrodynamic spindle2009DELTA completes its offer with Rotax,a new family of surface grindingmachines with rotary tableIng. Adriano Ceri, President of DELTAcollaboration with the department of mechanical engineering of the Politecnico diMilano, a method that DELTA was amongthe first to introduce. At the same time, the increasingly massive use of electronics and automation solutions led to thecreation of a section inside the DELTA engineering department dedicated to electrical and electronic design and softwaredevelopment. An all-round innovationeffort whose significance and effectiveness was recognized in 1995, when DELTAobtained the “Award for Innovation andHigh Technology” from the LombardyRegion in recognition of the uniquenessof its technological offer to the market. The high technological level of DELTAsolutions also led a significant growth ofsales in those years. All this thanks also to aconsolidated sales network which allowedthe company to play a decisive role on theItalian and international markets. It is in this modern structurethat the entire “Maxi” range of grindingmachines is now made.In 2002 DELTA was among the first Italianmachine tool manufacturers to obtain thecertification of its quality system accordingto UNI EN ISO 9001 standards from ICIMwith the world-wide recognized IQNetextension – “International CertificationNetwork.” This certificate crowned 50years of applied research, studies, innovation, investments and organizationaldevelopments aimed at maximum customer satisfaction. In 2009 the company alsoobtained the new UNI EN ISO 9001:2008certificate. During those years also the1991199520022003surface grinders were revamped: in 2004,the ELLE surface grinders produced in fivedifferent models with fixed, rotary andoscillating table, were joined by new automated models, such as L11E, which can beequipped with an effective and safe integral enclosure with an innovative design.2005 saw the launch of the MINI family oftravelling column machines with a smaller capacity range than the Maxi, ensuringhowever the same accuracy and reliability. The Rotax range of surface grinding machines with rotary table, successfully introduced in 2009, confirmed the distinctiveelements of DELTA machines: the travelling column, the Mackensen spindle andthe hydrostatic axes. The significant market results achievedwith these machine models have led thecompany from Pavia to choose to manufacture surface grinding machines exclusively equipped with travelling column, asegment in which today the DELTA brandhas become the market leader. “TodayDELTA – concludes Adriano Ceri – offersthe largest range of grinding machineswith travelling column, with the Maxiand Mini machines currently available in12 models with grinding surfaces from800x550 mm to 3,000x1,100 mm and thethree Rotax models with grinding diameters from 500 mm up to 1,200 mm.”Gold Medal for Export” of the Quality mark of the Association Award for Innovation and HighChamber of Commerce, Industryof Italian Manufacturers ofTechnology” of the Lombardyand Agriculture of PaviaMachine Tools (UCIMU)Region for the uniqueness oftechnological proposal2000DELTA is registered in the“Roll of Honor of the Cityof Pavia”Certification of the quality“Gold Medal - a Life for .” forsystem according to UNI EN ISO the prestige given to the sector9001 from ICIM with worldwideover the yearsIQNet extension, subsequentlyaligned with the new UNI ENISO 9001:2008 standards1999“Gold Medal for EconomicProgress” of the Chamberof Commerce, Industry andAgriculture of PaviaTODAYDELTA is synonymous withseriousness and reliability, even at a financial level. Infact it is classified Rating 1/ Prime Company by Dun&BradstreetComplex machines, simple useThanks to its software department, DELTAhas been able to equip its grinding machineswith a control software designed anddeveloped in-house, guaranteeing maximumcustomization and assistanceby Giancarlo GiannangeliAspecialist in the productionof high-tech flat surface grinding machines, DELTA offersits products in standard versions, eventhough customers almost always askfor special designs – especially today, when it is increasingly essential tointerface machines with planningsystems with a view to Industry 4.0.Modifications, adjustments, nonstandard machining cycles: nothingcould be easier for DELTA, since themachine control software is totallydesigned and developed in-house.The company from Pavia stands outin the panorama of machine toolmanufacturers thanks to its softwaredepartment established over twentyyears ago, as Paolo Marchesi, Software Development Manager, underlines: “We have become expertsin mechatronics, mixing our skills inIT, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and of course in theprocesses that our machine can perform. The goal that we have alwaysaimed at is to offer customers easyto-use software, really very simple, even if this means for us to writeextremely complex control codes:the software must “hide” any complexity of the machine to the operator. We want to absolutely avoidthat the user can make mistakes dueto a complicated or cumbersome interface, not intuitive.” This exclusiveaspect of Delta, that is the availabilityof IT engineers within the company, makes the software extraordinaryflexible for customers, who are thenable to immediately implement every correction, every operating change that they may need. The intimateknowledge of the machines also fromthe IT point of view is very useful toidentify issues rapidly, to quickly finda solution whenever needed.A Siemens CNC system installed on a MAXI2000/750 grinding machineIng. Paolo Marchesi, Software DevelopmentManager at DELTAReady for the future. and alsofor the pastThe future gives a glimpse of an increasingly advanced automation level: “The suppliers of components– explains Marchesi – are alreadymaking our work easier, offering newinterfaces in which the use of thetouch screen will be predominant, aswell as new sensors capable of collecting a greater number of data andinformation, increasingly controlledby electronics, but at the same timeeasier to use.”The other side of every workshop areold machines: “We still provide assistance for machines that we produced 40 years ago. We have seen howelectronics moves on rapidly, howcomponents quickly become obsolete: some controls have already disappeared from the market today. As wethink ahead and know the reluctanceof workshops in modernizing theirequipment, maybe after ‘only’ 15or 20 years, we keep large stocks ofevery type of electronic component. We can also introduce changes toensure the compatibility of new products – an aspect unknown to largemanufacturers which only an internalsoftware house can guarantee. Ourmotto has always been: never letdown a customer!”

There areseveral important technical aspectsthat, before price, we want to highlight to our customers because theyare the distinctive elements of ourproducts. Like the travelling columnof our grinding machines, a choice ofthe early 1980s that has never ceasedto be at the forefront and that we carry on with conviction. Another important technicalsolution consists of the spindle, withthe Mackensen hydrodynamic bearing for zero wear, ensuring precisemachining and very accurate surfacefinishing over time.”These elements explain the widespread presence of DELTA in some major manufacturing industries, frommoulds to precision mechanics, automotive, aeronautics and white goods, press brake blades and other sectors, boasting prestigious customers such asFCA, AvioAreo, Immergas, De Longhi,Fondital, Cembre, Dana, TP Tooling .“Our customer service – Maurizio Cericoncludes – is managed by our internal staff who are able to react withprofessionalism and timeliness to allcustomer requests, also through remote assistance. Our NC machines areIndustry4.0-ready, and we adopt forthem first class hardware and software developed by us in order to offer auser-friendly interface and to customize grinding cycles more effectively.”Delta’s ability to meet all customerneeds in terms of maintenance, repairs and retrofits for its grinding machines is also highly appreciated by themarket.Aconsolidated sales network allows DELTA to play a decisiverole on the Italian and international markets. The Lombard companyhas always exported a significant share of its production, which may evenreach 50%, depending on the year. TheChamber of Commerce of Pavia has repeatedly awarded the company withprizes and awards for its presence allover the world. The main outlet marketis Europe, while the application sectorsrange from pneumatics to hydraulics, manufacturers of machine parts, cars, aircraft, naval engines, without forgetting mould makers. Giovanni Marchesi,International Sales Manager, explains:“Many of our customers are multinational companies that – as they operate in different countries – support ourexports. Then there are non-Europeancountries that alternate in our portfolio depending on the years, such asSaudi Arabia, to which we have recently exported three machines: these aregenerally customers who are readyto buy machines from European manufacturers, although negotiationscan take years with various reviews ofthe specifications. Being able to win acontract of this kind gives a lot of satisfaction: the product, the technologyof the machines, but also the financialstanding and creditworthiness of thesupplier are evaluated. Each companyis subjected to in-depth scrutiny andcompetitors are numerous and fierce. We are generally appreciated for ourby Giancarlo Giannangeliattractive value for money and for thereputation of reliability and accuracythat our machines enjoy, whatever sizethey are.”Close to the customerOver the decades, Delta has alwaysstood out for its willingness to listento customers’ suggestions and to develop solutions to the problems faced bythe users; this ability to examine andintervene on the configuration of amachine, perhaps to make substantialchanges, is not so widespread amonglarge manufacturers, and is thereforeparticularly appreciated on international markets. The dialoguewith customers is often revealing:“The users themselves – GiovanniMarchesi says – show us the particular features of our machinesthat at the beginning we didn’tconsider, highlighting, for example, an excellent flexibility that isnot easy to find on the market. Listening to the operators has allowed us to makehuge leaps ininnovation. Iremember aDutch customer intere-sted in a process that required theavailability of a very rigid machine. After some trials, he found that ourgrinding machine was the ideal toolto work on ceramics, a material thatrequires total absence of vibrations,as they could affect such a fragile material.” As for customer assistance andtraining, given the temporary ban oninternational travels, DELTA has beenable to maintain its relationship withcustomers using alternative means andsmart communication systems in placeof traditional trips.ROTAX 12NC grindingmachine
