Anambient collection approach is designed to limit averageoverall concentrations of weld fumes. Unlike sourcecapture methods, ambient collection does not addresseach weld process but instead focuses on weld fumelevels on average across the overall room volume.The key to effective ambient collection is maintainingproper air movement throughout the entire air volumearound the designated work zone. Weld fumes naturallyrise to a stratification layer approximately 10-15 feet abovethe shop floor. Locating the air intake for an ambientcollector at this height supports its effectiveness. Returningfiltered air near floor-level helps support the naturalcirculation in a facility.Ambient collectors are typically placed throughouta facility. The number of collectors required for anoperation is determined by the size of the work area, rateof welding and application.
