2016 was a great year for the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development CorporationThe Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation made tremendous strides(MBREDC). Our team announced five great projects – Frontier Communications, Executivetoward improving our local economy in 2016. Five companies made announcements totalingHeliJet, Banton Media, Kingman Airline Services, and Ebtron. These five companies422 full time jobs and collectively committed 6.85 million in capital investment throughoutrepresent a combined investment of 6.85 million and the creation of 422 full time jobsHorry County over the next five years. Four of these firms are existing businesses and, withover the next five years. What is truly exciting is that four of these announcements were fromtheir announcements, they have declared that Horry County is a great place to operate aexisting businesses. Their commitment to Horry County is evidence that we have the rightbusiness.business environment and support system in place for businesses of all types and sizes toshows, marketing missions to business locations, conference calls with c-suite executives, andreferrals from our economic development partners and board members. These 150 leadsIn regards to the operations of our organization, the MBREDC Board of Directors approved aare businesses that are based out of 31 states and 7 countries. The MBREDC team travelled5-year strategic plan in 2016 that will continue to guide our organization. The strategic planto sixteen different locations across the US to meet with company executives and held overoutlines three major goals and initiatives:1.twenty conference calls with prospective industries in 2016. The MBREDC team also metTo recruit and retain high-quality industries to generate jobs for the citizens of Horry County, resulting in an annual increase of 175fulltime jobs and at least 5 million in private capital investment (with an annual “stretch” goal of 225 fulltime jobs and 10 millionin capital investment);2.To provide a variety of high-quality economic development “products” in which new and existing industries can locate and/orexpand; and3.5To have the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation be recognized as a leader in economic developmentwithin Horry County and throughout South Carolina.on-site with over 14 different existing businesses and interacted with twenty-five national site selection consultants. As we move into 2017,we will continue to meet new prospects and cultivate the relationships we have made in 2016.2016 was not without its challenges though. Our community and many of our friends and family were impacted by Hurricane Matthew.Businesses and homes were damaged or destroyed. Thankfully no lives were lost in Horry County, but other areas impacted were not sofortunate. Our lives and routines were jarred, but our collective resiliency helped us overcome this natural disaster. Businesses reopenedquickly. Volunteers and community members stepped up and began rebuilding almost immediately. Our community showed the world howwe respond in times of distress. Our determination and dedication to restart operations impressed prospective businesses and is countedThe past and future successes of the MBREDC would not be possible though without the support of our public and private sectoras one more reason Horry County is in their relocation and expansion plans.investors. In October, Horry County and neighboring counties were directlyimpacted by Hurricane Matthew as it made its way up the coastlinewith an official landfall southeast of McClellanville, SC as a Category 1Hurricane. It brought destructive high speed winds, storm surgeflooding, and an unsettling sense of concern throughout theMyrtle Beach and surrounding areas.Thankfully local and state officials kept the public alerted andevacuations were given with ample time for preparation. In theaftermath of Hurricane Matthew, there were nearly 200,000 peopleaffected in Horry County by power outages served by Santee Cooper11hurricane delivered the biggest hit to its transmission and distributionsystem since Hurricane Hugo 27 years ago. There was also tremendous structural damage done to residential and commercial structuresthroughout the area along with erosion of dunes on our beaches.The MBREDC would like to take this opportunity to show ourgratitude for all the hard work that was bestowed on Horry Countyand continues to be as we clean up and rebuild. The company will add 75 newfull-time jobs to current operations and investapproximately 1.1 million for a five-year period.The jobs will pay an average of 20.55 per hourwith employee benefits.“In March 2016, Frontier Communications, aprovider of telephone, television and internetservices, announced plans to expand its HorryCounty operations, adding 37 new jobs andan investment of 463,000. This railroad has a message of economic development and in turn, more jobs. “This is all about jobs. EXISTING INDUSTRYFrom metal fabricators to call centers, Horry County is home to some greatbusinesses. The Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporationteam constantly builds relationships through open communication and visitationswith our existing industries, which allows us to provide support when needed. TheWWW.MBREDC.ORGEXISTING INDUSTRY22MBREDC also serves as a liaison between our existing businesses, localcommunities, utilities, and governmental agencies to address urgent businessconcerns and issues. Through these relationships, we are able to find waysto retain and to assist in the expansion of businesses, which leads to new capitalinvestment and jobs for Horry County residents.It is often quoted that most all new jobs are created by businesses that alreadylocated in a community. 2016 MEMBERSHIP & EVENTSANNUAL MEETINGOn January 14, 2016, MBREDC hosted its Annual Meeting at the Marina Inn atGrande Dunes. Over 200 EDC members and partners joined us for the meetingto network and to hear about our plans for the upcoming year. South CarolinaSecretary of Commerce, Bobby Hitt, was our guest speaker for the event. He also provided an update on statewide economicdevelopment efforts and how South Carolina is leading the country in attractingforeign investment and the creation of manufacturing jobs.SPRING SOCIALIn May, MBREDC held its Spring Social at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans BaseballStadium. Guests enjoyed a casual, fun night of networking and baseball.SUMMER INDUSTRY EVENTIn June, MBREDC partnered with the Coastal Industrial Alliance for the SummerIndustry Event at the The Dunes Club. Guests enjoyed refreshments, networking,and got to hear from Dr. Fore of Horry Georgetown Technical College. Shediscussed the new Advanced Manufacturing Centers that are being built inHorry and Georgetown Counties and how the college is supporting industrygrowth and workforce development initiatives.FALL OYSTER ROAST SOCIALIn October, MBREDC partnered with NESA to host an Oyster Roast Socialat the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach. Guests enjoyed a casualevening of drinks, networking, giveaways, and oysters.In addition to the quarterly socials that are attended by members, community partners,elected officials and MBREDC representatives, the MBREDC held several events thatmembers and existing industry attended to gain insights on issues like Business andIndustry Assistance, Content Marketing, and Recruiting and Retaining Local Talent.
