Helping OthersEmpowers VolunTeen Rohit Makol of South Windsor is not your typicalHartford Hospital volunteer. The University ofConnecticut sophomore has been spending hissummers volunteering at the hospital since 2013,logging more than 700 hours to date, which is a lotconsidering Volunteer Services’ VolunTeen programrequires a minimum of only 48 hours each summer.Makol, who plans to attend medical school, isn’tone for minimums, however. “I am motivated by theidea that I can be better and do better,” he says.“It’s important to put your heart into anything thatyou pick up. I know the first year I volunteered,I pretty much developed a routine of going to myshift, eating lunch, going back to my shift, and thengoing home. The following summer, I made an effortto greet people, help out strangers, and sit and talkto other volunteers during lunch. Doing all thesethings made the experience so much morerewarding and enjoyable.”There are over 200 volunteer positions availablethroughout the hospital. The Summer VolunTeenProgram accepts students 14 to 18 years old whoare in high school or are new graduates with aGPA of 3.0 or higher. They must be available tovolunteer for at least six of the eight-week program, contributing a minimum of eight hours per week. The commitment is substantial considering theattraction of the long carefree days of summer orthe opportunity to earn money. But for students likeMakol, the exposure to all that goes on at a hospitalis invaluable.“The positive atmosphere and environment atHartford Hospital are things that you don’t alwaysfind in other hospitals,” he says. “Even before youenter the doors, you are greeted by upbeat valetpeople. At the front desk, you have receptionistswho are always smiling, security personnel who arereally friendly and are ready to help you find yourlocation, and passers-by who always say ‘Hi’.”He spent his first summer at the hospital workingas perioperative clerk in Jefferson Building and withmedical records at the Brownstone Clinic. He hasworked at the Center for Education, Simulation andInnovation, a highlight of which was participating inactive shooter drills with SWAT teams: “It was anamazing experience.” And he enjoyed interactingwith patients at the new Bone & Joint Institute.“I’ve worked as an OR aide, which was really coolbecause I got to wear scrubs and deliver blood packsto the OR. I helped out the main desk a lot, madeannouncements on the intercom, and helpedanesthesia supply restock their supply room. I alsoworked with the Dialysis Department. These jobsallowed me to see many different things at thehospital.”Because of his positive approach, in 2015 hewas selected as one of the five shift leaders forthe VolunTeen program.“The shift leader role was implemented in 2015to assist in the running of the summer VolunTeenprogram,” said Eileen Pelletier, director of VolunteerServices. “I wanted to make the program moremanageable in terms of staff time. In fact, therole allowed me to add additional features tothe program.”Shift leaders assist with everything frominterviewing potential new volunteers for theprogram to providing oversight of educationalsessions to mentoring other summer volunteersto functioning as a liaison between hospital staffand the high school volunteers. To be chosen for the shift leader role, studentsmust have completed at least 50 hours of volunteerservice at Hartford Hospital, have a current GPAof 3.0 or higher, be in good standing with theprogram, and possess excellent interpersonal andcommunication skills as well as computer skills.“I was surprised by the amount of flexibility thatcomes with the shift leader job,” Makol says.“As long as you are on top of your duties, there area lot of opportunities to pursue projects alongsideyour regular duties. I decided that I wanted to helpput together a yearbook and music video. After wegot approval for the project, we were able to makethe summer experience a lot moreenjoyable for our VolunTeens.”“Volunteering makes me feelempowered,” Makol says.“I’ve met so many people,I have seen different parts tothe hospital, and, mostimportantly, I have learneda great deal about myself.I love putting a smileon someone’s face andknowing that at theend of the day, I madea positive impact.”Volunteer services reported 94,202 hoursfrom 1,037 volunteers in 240 areasof the organization from October 2015 toSeptember 2016.Volunteers’ contribution of time is equivalentto 47 full-time employees.Contribution of time in dollars is equal to 2.6 million based on a dollar valueas assigned by the Independent Sector.31,000 HoursLouise Steiner4,500 HoursJoseph Bradley29,000 HoursWoodruff Glascock4,000 HoursBarbara GordonScott Merkelson3,500 HoursRita CasarolaEiko HaywardRonald HerrmannMary Newcity25,000 HoursJane Hamilton20,000 HoursAnastasia Ramus19,000 HoursCornelia HullMildred LindenGara Van Schaack44,000 hours were served in direct patientcare roles by 655 volunteers.18,000 HoursMuriel ShreveMabel Wright76 teen volunteers completed our15,000 HoursHonora SobanskiMidge Terrysummer program in 2016.54 volunteers serve annually onhospital advisory boards.22 Hartford Hospital employeesvolunteered during their off-work time, contributing 618 hours to programs thatenhance the patient experience and offeropportunities to engage employees beyondtheir work day.14,000 HoursAda GardnerRuth Griswold13,000 HoursCharlotte HartnettHazel Vail12,000 HoursEvelyn ComentMichael Rosano11,000 HoursMarjorie BurmanGloria MardRuth Swanson10,000 HoursStephanie PrucnalElizabeth RankinTerry ShookusHartford Hospital pet therapy teamscontributed 3,400 hours of service toour patients and staff.9,500 HoursRalph Kenneson61 percent of the volunteer workforce is female.8,500 HoursBarbara CoffinMargaret EberleThe median age of a HartfordHospital volunteer (for those whoprovided dates of birth) is 39. 4 percent ofour current volunteers are over the age of 60.Our oldest active volunteer is 92.Volunteering at HartfordHospital transformedRohit Makol from a shyguy to a beloved leader.Volunteers4 active volunteers have servedgreater than 60 years each.Volunteer Services received 2,053applications in FY 2016.8,000 HoursEthel Lavieri7,500 HoursMary CraryJoseph DistefanoEuphemia Serpliss7,000 HoursKathy HerzogJohn PetersonPatricia Rinaldi6,000 HoursSally Williams5,500 HoursCindy Wasserman5,000 HoursEleanor BensonJohn BoccaccioElaine Popielarski3,000 HoursPatrick CamilleriMaureen FisherDawn Pizzoferrato2,500 HoursDurmus Ali AvciEdith DecarolisSebastian DignotiMichael GlazierRichard GrahamJanet LeeMarillyn Loomis2,000 HoursSharyn BlichtMartin CourneenFrancis DeLisaBarbara DennisWilliam DerechLori FlaksEthan GuidaWilliam LeeBarbara LockeryEdwin LomersonTheodore MadisonBernadette MadisonFranz RoesnerVictoria Scranton1,900 HoursDalia GiedrimieneBarbara MyjakJeffrey WidemCarolyn Wynne1,800 HoursFrances ConsoliEileen CyrJoyce FritzPatricia Maciag1,700 HoursAubrey Loomis1,500 HoursJane HolzmannEliot MagRosemary Panella1,400 HoursJoseph DugganTimothy HealyHeidi Kelsey1,300 HoursCarol CollinsPatricia KleinRichard LevineIrene MadiganHollis Schneider1,200 HoursMarie BaileyArmand MorassiniVirginia Van DykBoneta (Bonnie) Zaman1,000 HoursDeborah BatorKhadijah HayesFay Levin-LavoieMary Jane MooreKathleen MowchanEllen See900 HoursHilary AllenKelley BoothbyKarin Peterson800 HoursValerie BryanTom ClarkeKathy ComptonDoreen DragoFrancis LuczakPatricia RinaldiCarole ShowalterDonna SzarwakJoel Zimmerman700 HoursRaymond AlexanderShailaja BalajiNieshea BlandChristine CollinsRose DeLisaJohn ForroEugene HazanovErin HealerMartha Kemp-AlbertRohit MakolJudith SparksAshley StovallJanice Wallace600 HoursRalph ArcariLinda DemikatElizabeth ForroAntonia IndomenicoLois LommeMartha LongleyAmelia MorangeEmiliana PhilippeAmy Steinberg500 HoursDorothy AbbottJavier BelloCharlotte BlockC. The 1854 SocietyThe 1854 Society recognizes individuals whose planned gifts have been received or will someday accrueto Hartford Hospital. Planned gifts include bequests made through testamentary devices, such as wills, retirement plans, and revocable trusts, as well as lifetime gifts that provide income to donors and theirbeneficiaries. Life income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and the hospital’sPooled Income Fund, typically involve the transfer of gift assets, immediate tax advantages and continuingincome streams to the donor, with future distributions to the hospital for its general or specific charitablepurposes. Thoughtful gift planning offers each person the opportunity to make an endowed gift that willcontinue to help the hospital for generations to come. We are deeply grateful to members of the 1854 Society andespecially appreciative of their thoughtful commitment to the future financial well-being of HartfordHospital.
