A Message from the DeanIn my first year as Dean, I have been inspired by the generosity and enthusiasmof our Northwestern Law alumni and friends. Your financial support enables us toaccomplish great things at the Law School and I thank you for all your support. Withyour efforts, we had our best fundraising year in nearly a decade, contributing morethan 12.4 million dollars to Northwestern Law. In addition to our overall success, wehad a record breaking year for our Law School Fund, raising over 2.4 million dollars.This past fiscal year has been marked by continuingenergy and initiative. We were honored withvisits by leading judges, key government officials(including the Attorney General of the UnitedStates), revered alumni and major legal scholars.Esteemed faculty members, including the belovedleader of the Bluhm Legal Clinic, Tom Geraghty,were named to endowed professorships. We wereable to recruit spectacular new faculty membersand to retain star colleagues in the face of attractiveoutside offers. The Clinic had many successesduring the year, from hard won exonerationsof the wrongfully convicted, to visits to Malawifor students and faculty to fight human rightsviolations, to advocacy efforts for youth navigatingthe justice system. In every corner of the law school,faculty and students are working hard at teaching,learning, advocating and in every way improvingthe legal profession nationally and internationally.Northwestern Law School has an important roleto be a leader in the educational and professionalworld. And we are undertaking this role in waysmodest and mighty.2Let me say a special word about financial supportand our law students. I am delighted to note thatwe were able this year, thanks to your generoussupport, to support nearly 300 students withscholarships. This last endeavor is of specialsignificance, as I have made it a high priority of mydeanship to tackle the relentless predicament ofstudent debt. Northwestern Law School attractsthe best and brightest, but we can only maintainour competitive edge by addressing the financialburdens of legal education and designing oureconomic model around the contemporarysituation of the law school employment market.The key to our strategies in this regard is externalfinancial support.In this report, you will find an explanation of thefunding resources and expenditures of the Law Schoolover the last year, information on our giving society,the John Henry Wigmore Club, the results of oursuccessful Firm & Corporate Challenge, and our honorroll of donors for the 2012 Fiscal Year (September1, 2011 – August 31, 2012). This year, the honor rollincludes recognition of donors with five years ofconsecutive giving, as well a list of those friends whomade a provision for the law school in their estateplans. Those farsighted individuals are recognizedthrough the Henry & Emma Rogers Society.On behalf of the faculty and students of ourgreat law school, I thank you for the extraordinarysupport. John Henry Wigmore ClubThe Wigmore Club was founded in 1962, in honor of John Henry Wigmore, Northwestern Law’s first full-timedean. Wigmore was a prolific scholar, songwriter, innovator, and researcher and served as the Law School’s deanfrom 1901 to 1929 and as a member of its faculty until his death in 1943.
