YEAR IN REVIEWVolunteer EngagementIn February, 16 AlumniAmbassadors gathered onlinefor the first-ever AmbassadorMeet Up. The purpose of thisvirtual gathering was to providea space where Ambassadorscould get to know one anotherwhile also brainstorming ideasfor furthering the alumniprogram. Participant feedbackwas positive and future meetups will be held to supportAmbassadors and providean opportunity for volunteernetworking.OrganizationAmbassadors:Giving in the WorkplaceThe fall 2014 issue of ExcelsiorCollege Magazine included acall to action asking AlumniAmbassadors to help supportExcelsior students and graduatesworking for the same employer. As the only Excelsior grad atthe childcare center where sheworks, Ambassador EstherStiel, BS ’13, of Brooklyn, NewYork, instead hosted a pizzaparty for her colleagues whereshe provided information aboutthe College’s academic programsas a means of encouragingothers to consider Excelsior asan option for degree completion.Alumni Advisory BoardMember Shannon McMillan,AS ’07, BS ’09, is always on thelookout for potential Excelsiorstudents. As a lieutenantcommander for the U.S. Navy,he has a captive audience ofsailors on his ship and heconsiders it his mission to adviseShannon McMillanthem on how they can earn adegree while in the military. Heprovides them with informationabout Excelsior’s degreeprograms and even guides themthrough the enrollment process. This year, he gave a presentationabout Excelsior to nearly30 potential students whilestationed in Southeast Asia.Alumni Ambassador Esther Stiel (second from right), gathered colleagues together to tell them about the academic programs at Excelsior College.8EXCELSIOR COLLEGE HONOR ROLL OF VOLUNTEERS 2014–2015

Being the Eyes and Earsof the CollegeWith alumni all over the world,it’s hard to determine the needsof all Excelsior graduates. That’s why we love it when you,as volunteers, call us and say,“I have an idea for somethingthat will benefit many Excelsiorstudents and/or graduates.”Such was the case last summerwhen Jennifer Gentry, AS inNursing ’04, BS in nursing’11, MS in nursing ’15, joinedthe Alumni Advisory Board. Asa nursing administrator for theChristus Spohn hospital systemin Corpus Christie, Texas, and,at the time, a student earningher third Excelsior nursingdegree, Jennifer saw a need fora testing site in that area for themandatory clinical performancein nursing exam (CPNE ). Sheworked with her employer andthe School of Nursing to findan appropriate facility at whichto establish the site. After nearlya year, Excelsior was able toestablish an agreement withJennifer GentryChristus Spohn Hospital inAlice, Texas, and this summerbegan hiring faculty to staff thetesting facility.Flexibility: It GoesBoth WaysPerhaps you’re one of the manyAmbassadors who feel theflexibility of Excelsior’s alumnivolunteer program makes iteasy for you to continue givingyour time and expertise whenand how it works for you. Well, with a small Alumni Affairsstaff, that flexibility works forus, too.Having a cadre of volunteersto call on for expertise, oftenon short notice, enables us tomultiply our efforts thanks toyour efforts. So, whether it’sa call to Alumni AmbassadorChristopher Warsitz, BS ’11, totap his expertise on planning aroad race or an email to AlumniAmbassador David Bliss,BS ’12, asking for his help inpromoting a nuclear technologysocial media campaign, orasking Alumni Advisory Boardmember Sandy Butterfield,BS in nursing ’86, to sharebrochures about the College’snewest nursing initiative — onethat helps veterans obtaina bachelor’s degree innursing — with the veterans sheteaches, we rely on your supportin big ways and small.Christopher WarsitzDavid BlissSandy ButterfieldEXCELSIOR COLLEGE HONOR ROLL OF VOLUNTEERS 2014–20159
