The town has “good bones,”and even the empty buildings in the old downtown havereal restoration potential. The growth of North Tucson andOracle will certainly influence conditions in Mammoth, and the Apache Sky Casino is already making itspresence known. The many successful cafes and servicesdemonstrate the value of Mammoth’s location along theSan Pedro. This past week I went to a planning session, led by GingerChester, the new President of the Board of the CopperBasin Chamber of Commerce, on the upcoming GreatPumpkin and Trunk-or-Treat Festival which will be heldSaturday, October 28, in Kearny. Interest in the eventhas grown, and many new people came to be volunteersand help plan all the events. The group worked onimprovements for this already popular event, thinking ofmore things for the children and also for their parents andfriends.TOWN OF KEARNYLIBRARY ADVISORY BOARDWould you like to be on the Library Advisory Board for the Townof Kearny? Sept. 6, 2017www.copperarea.comCopper Basin News 3Beginning of school year often reveals child abuse, neglectThe end of summer and the start of a new school yearis an exciting time for most children. But for some, thebeginning of school could reveal a dark secret when signsof abuse and neglect these children have suffered over thesummer are noticed by teachers, staff and other parents.“Because children are subject to less adult supervisionover the summer, it’s not uncommon for reports ofsuspected abuse and neglect to spike at the start of theschool year,” states Patti Dremler, CASA Coordinator ofNorthern Gila County. Many of the children who are confirmed as victims areremoved from their homes and placed into foster care—often far from their friends, families and schools. CASA(Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers fromCASA of Gila County are specially screened and trained tospeak up for abused and neglected children who, throughno fault of their own, end up in the foster care system.“Being uprooted from their homes and families is scaryfor these children. We at CASA want to make sure thatthey do not get lost in the overburdened foster caresystem,” Dremler states. “For that reason, we need morepeople in our community to speak up and make sure thesechildren’s voices are heard. We want to help ensure thattheir stay in foster care is as short as possible and thatthey are placed in safe, loving homes quickly so they canbegin to heal.”There are 110 children in the child protection system inGila County, and only 18 CASA volunteers to advocate fortheir best interests.“Too many children are forced to go through thechaos of moving through the child protection systemalone,” Dremler said. “CASA of Gila County needs morevolunteers to step up and be a voice for children whodesperately need them.”Joanie King has been a CASA volunteer for 2 years. Asa CASA volunteer she advocates for children’s needs incourt and in the child welfare system. She helps themthrough their struggles in foster care. Joanie’s mainobjective is to help the children obtain the services theyneed to help them heal from the trauma they experiencedand to feel loved and safe.“We need more dedicated CASA volunteers like Joanieto walk with children every step of the way and ensureKearny Police ReportAccording to state law, there are two methodsby which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into thedepartment and booked into jail, or the arrestingofficer may write a citation and release thesuspect to appear in court later. Allowing that child tomake a small effort in order to share thatmagic for future generations is a pricelesslesson. It is my hope that the children willbe proud of the book donations made intheir name and tell their friends, therebyfurther encouraging both literacy andphilanthropy.”The 13th national Grow Your Libraryevent will be visiting Kearny Library at10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017 with adonation of 240 new books to the library, valued at 3,144, and a special story timepresentation for children. At the requestof Library Director Janet Danilow, manyof the books selected for this donationare for young adults, however, theadults in the community should lovethem also. The library is located at 912Tilbury Dr, A, Kearny, AZ 85137. Eachchild in attendance will receive a freebook and Highlights magazine courtesyof KNTR. They will also learn how theycan use their own love of reading to helpthe Kearny Library earn even more freebooks in the future. When asked aboutthe motive behind the project, KNTRExecutive Director Denise Gary stated,“The importance of reading extendsfar beyond the mechanics. Its greatestpower is determined by how each personuses reading to shape their lives. Inspiringchildren to read at an early age allows thatvital, lifelong process to begin.”About Kids Need to Read:Founded with a passion to improvethe lives of disadvantaged children byproviding inspiring book collectionsand engaging literacy programs tounderfunded schools, libraries, andContinued on page 12Local area sees increase in bed bug activityBed bugs. The name alone can cause shudders ofrevulsion. They are just so icky. While there has been an increase of bedbug activity reported in the Copper Basinarea, the Pinal County Health Departmentreported that the good new is they don’ttransmit infectious diseases. The only timethe department does step in is when bedbugs are reported at hotels.Graham Briggs, a Pinal County HealthDepartment official who works in theinfectious diseases office, recommendsthat if a homeowner has noticed bed bugactivity, they should call a licensed pestremediation company.“Call pest control,” he suggests. The health department doesn’t track bedbug complaints, but it has seen an uptickin complaints. Briggs explained that thisuptick is in line with what is happeningnationally. It’s pretty much everywhere, hesaid.According to the Centers for DiseaseControl:What are bed bugs?Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed solely onthe blood of people and animals whilethey sleep. Bed bugs are reddish-brownin color, wingless, range from 1mm to7mm (roughly the size of Lincoln’s headon a penny), and can live several monthswithout a blood meal.Where are bed bugs found?Bed bugs are found across the globe fromNorth and South America, to Africa, Asiaand Europe. Although the presence ofbed bugs has traditionally been seen as aproblem in developing countries, it hasrecently been spreading rapidly in partsof the United States, Canada, the UnitedKingdom, and other parts of Europe. Bedbugs have been found in five-star hotelsand resorts and their presence is notdetermined by the cleanliness of the livingconditions where they are found.Bed bug infestations usually occur aroundor near the areas where people sleep. These areas include apartments, shelters, rooming houses, hotels, cruise ships, buses, trains, and dorm rooms. They hideduring the day in places such as seamsof mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, dresser tables, inside cracksor crevices, behind wallpaper, or any otherclutter or objects around a bed. Bed bugshave been shown to be able to travel over100 feet in a night but tend to live within 8feet of where people sleep.Do bed bugs spread disease?Bed bugs are not known to spread disease.Bed bugs can be an annoyance becausetheir presence may cause itching and lossof sleep. Sometimes the itching can lead toexcessive scratching that can sometimesincrease the chance of a secondary skininfection. What health risks do bed bugs pose?A bed bug bite affects each persondifferently. Bite responses can range froman absence of any physical signs of the bite,to a small bite mark, to a serious allergicreaction. Bed bugs are not considered to bedangerous; however, an allergic reaction toseveral bites may need medical attention. What are the signs and symptoms ofa bed bug infestation? One of the easiest ways to identify a bedbug infestation is by the tell-tale bite markson the face, neck, arms, hands, or any otherbody parts while sleeping. However, thesebite marks may take as long as 14 days todevelop in some people so it is importantto look for other clues when determining ifbed bugs have infested an area. These signsinclude: the bed bugs’ exoskeletons after molting, bed bugs in the fold of mattresses andsheets, rusty–colored blood spots due to theirblood-filled fecal material that they excreteon the mattress or nearby furniture, anda sweet musty odor.To learn more about bed bugs, ml.You can also find more informationat https://entomology.ca.uky.edu/ef636.
