Sept. 20, 2017www.copperarea.comSuperior Sun 5Tonto Forestapproves LOSTTrail rerouteThe Legends of Superior Trails Inc. (LOST) organizationreceived news on Monday, Sept. 18, that the re-route of thegateway connector trail between Superior and the ArizonaTrail Picket Post Trail head was approved to be constructedthrough Arnett Canyon. The news came via a DecisionMemo issued by the Tonto National Forest - Globe RangerDistrict. The original gateway connector trail was obliteratedwhen US 60 was expanded. The Arizona Department ofTransportation provided funding to mitigate the loss of thetrail to the Tonto National Forest which would help fundconstruction of a new trail. Two plans were submitted bythe LOST: a northern route through Arnett Canyon andsouthern route that would have bypassed the Picket PostTrailhead. Outdoor recreation groups and locals alikecommented favorably that the northern route throughArnett would meet the needs of both long distance hikerson the Arizona Trail as well as day use, while also providingimproved access and recreation activities for Superior. The LOST will now have a segment that connects hikers,Continued on page 9Hiking the Arnett Canyon trail.
