Full-Time ProfessorsAbout Taft College Faculty RegaliaAcademic dress has been associated with learning for centuries. Its origin is consideredto be ecclesiastical, though the gown of the medieval scholar may have developed out ofthe ordinary civilian costume of an earlier period. The medieval scholar was often amonk who found the hood and gown a protection against the cold of his cell. He usedthe sleeves of his gown for carrying his books and supplies.In the United States, three types of gowns and three types of hoods have been designedfor the baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate, respectively. The square caps are thesame, except that the doctoral hood may be made of velvet and have a tassel of gold.The distinguishing characteristic of the gowns is the sleeve—pointed and hanging to theknee for the bachelor; closed (the arm comes through a slit at the elbow), square at theend, extending well below the knee for the masters; and full, round, open, bell-shapedand adorned with three bars of velvet for the doctoral.The colors of the hood represent two things: the wearer’s alma mater and the departmentof learning. The lining of silk is the color or colors of the college or university grantingthe degree. The velvet trim is in the color that represents the department of learning inwhich the degree was obtained. The stolesare embroidered with the Taft College seal located on the left-hand side. In addition to the traditionalceremonial dress, some students are also recognized with specialized honor regalia as describedbelow:Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) was established nationally in 1918 and serves to recognize and encouragethe achievement of two-year college students. The Taft College PTK Chapter members arerecognized with blue and gold honors cords and/or gold stoles with “PTK” embroidered in blue.National Society of Leadership and Success was established nationally in 1920. Studentsare invited by local chapter leaders typically based on GPA and/or leadership potential. Membersare adorned with black and silver stoles embroidered with Sigma Alpha Pi and cords to match.Associated Student Organization officers are identified by white stoles displaying the TaftCollege seal and title of office held. Officers are elected annually by the student body.Student Athletes are wearing black satin stoles trimmed in gold satin displaying the CougarMascot embroidered on the right.Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS)/CalWORKS award theirscholars gold medallions hung on black and gold ribbons that distinguish them for theirscholastic achievements.Career Technical Education (CTE) program graduates are wearing three-color variegatedcords of orange, teal, and chartreuse. CTE provides students of all ages with the academic andtechnical skills, knowledge, and training necessary to succeed in future careers and becomelifelong learners.Administration of Justice and Criminal Justice graduates are recognized with blue andblack cords.Dental Hygiene graduates are wearing purple stoles embroidered in white and displaying themedical caduceus insignia.English graduates are sporting pine white stoles embroidered with the TC logo and Cougar Mascot.Early Care, Education, and Family Studies graduates are wearing light blue and goldbraided cords.Graduates who are Veterans are recognized with red, white, and blue braided cords in honor oftheir service and commitment to our country.Page 6Page 7
