ACADEMIC REGALIAThe history of academic regalia dates back to the formation of the oldest universities, withEuropean universities showing a diversified array of academic apparel. Americancolleges and universities decided to adopt a consistent system of academic attireapproximately a century ago, so the intercollegiate commission drafted an academiccostume code that would impact colleges and universities in the United States. The mace is a traditional symbol of authority carried by the Grand Marshall atceremonies such as graduation. With echoes of historical use as a weapon, the academicmace represents education's ability to break through ignorance and prejudice. The main staff of the mace is made of walnut, symbolizing the quality of education offeredat Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences. The five rings represent thefive foundingdepartments at our College: mental, physical, social, and spiritual development. Theflame at the top, like the College logo, is the symbol of the spirit of education and caringoffered at our College. The various academic gowns represent the different degrees that are conferred. Forinstance, the gown for the associate's and bachelor's degree has pointed sleeves. The gownfor the master's degree has oblong sleeves which open at the wrist. The gown for thedoctoral degree has bell-shaped sleeves which close at the wrist. On the back of the gowns are hoods that are lined with the official color or colors from thecollege or university conferring the degree. the colors of the velvet trim represent thedifferent disciplines in which the degree was conferred. While members of our faculty hold degree from numerous univers.ities and colleges, spacedoes not permit an identification of each.Arts, Letters, HumanitiesBusinessEducationWhiteDrabLight BlueFine ArtsBrownLibrary ScienceLemonNursingPhilosophyPublic HealthScienceTheology, MinistryApricotDark BlueSalmon PinkGolden YellowScarlet
