This carefully designed class will allow all participants to becomecomfortable creating watercolor paintings of various subjects and sizes, using a variety ofpainting methods.The class will explore background washes, color contrasts and complements, light and darkemphasis, masking, foreground and background structure, overall composition, and how the eyeand mind see art. Participants will produce many watercolor paintings to examine and refinetheir understanding of the "best practices" of watercolor painting.CLASS MATERIALS PROVIDEDYour class registration fee includes a materials kit shipped to your door. ***Please contact yourinstructor to give them your mailing address and to discuss any questions you may have. 20 sheets 5X7 High quality watercolor paper 3 sheets 8X10 High quality watercolor paper 10 white mats for “framing” paintingsCLASS MATERIALS NEEDED Watercolor paintso At least one red, one yellow, and one blue color (Almost any quality of paint willdo)Watercolor paint brushes (Almost any quality will do)o A small number and varietyHousehold itemso paper towelso facial tissueo masking tapeo peno pencilo erasero drinking strawso credit cardo plastic container for waterA simple palette for mixing the colors (A porcelain plate would be sufficient)1

Use a variety of methods and getcomfortable creating paintings of different shapes and sizes. Explorebackground washes, color contrasts and complements, light and darkemphasis, composition, how the mind and eye see art, and more! Complete anumber of watercolor works to examine and refine your understanding of bestpractices.Here are examples of some possible work products from the course:This class is presented in collaboration with the John C. CLASS OVERVIEW, GOALS, AND SYLLABUSEach day, we will meet together for two hours in the morning. At that time there will be 3-5short demonstrations of different approaches, techniques, methods, and concepts. During andimmediately following each demonstration, you are encouraged to paint what is beingdemonstrated.After the end of the morning session and until the beginning of the evening session, the ZOOMplatform will remain open. During that time, I will be available for individual questions,conversations, and a review of what you have been painting, if you wish.We have a one hour session in the evening. There may be a brief demonstration, and someopportunities for painting, as there was in the morning. We might also use the time for follow updemonstrations based on the questions and feedback that students provide to me during theday.Most of these demonstrations daily will be of small paintings. One of the challenges of thewatercolor process is the drying of the paint when making larger paintings. We will not tacklethat until later in the week.All will be receiving a supply of high-quality watercolor paper, and a few mats for framingselective paintings.CLASS GOALSEach participant:1. Enjoy the learning and painting experience!2. Do a lot of painting; make a “large number” of paintings3. Become more comfortable making watercolor paintings4.
