FEBRUARY/MARCH 2010The View from Here: “Angels Can Fly Because They Take Themselves Lightly”In just a few weeks, Willow Grove UMC will join Christians of many denominations, all around theworld, in celebrating an ancient tradition, made new. February 14 in church will be Holy Humor Sunday. On that day, just before the solemn period of Lent that leads up to Easter, we will celebrate the joy weknow as followers of the resurrected Christ.Holy Humor Sunday is based on sound theology and history. It is a modern adaptation of theancient custom of Easter Monday, which still is a holiday in dozens of countries, featuring picnics, parties, practical jokes, joke-telling, and boys and girls drenching each other with water. The custom is rooted inthe musings of early church theologians (like Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa, and John Chrysostom) thatGod played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead. Many churches throughout the United States have experienced a revival of the spirit when theyallow the everyday humor of life to be expressed in this special worship service. One pastor re-wrote thecommunion liturgy for his church to read: “Giving thanks to God is a good and a joyful task, to be donewith smiles on our faces and laughter in our hearts; for it is God who created us creatures of mirth andjoy the God who helped us overcome the gloominess in our own lives."We invite you not just to come and watch, but to be part of the fun. Don‟t stay away because it‟ssomething new. Come with open hearts and minds. We will be irreverent in all the most tasteful ways.We will worship God with a song in our heart, and maybe a silly hat on our head, but in the true spirit ofGod‟s gift of healing through laughter and joy. The Rev. Daniel McDonald wrote, "Laughter releasestension, and we have enough of that these days. I think we all need to stop taking ourselves so seriously. We need to recognize that this is really God's world, and He has so much in store for us. We put toomuch emphasis on what's wrong and what's bad with it."There will be a time to tell your favorite corny jokes. Bring them with you! Practical jokes arewelcome, as long as nobody gets wet! Wear a silly hat, or better a whole crazy outfit, to get in the mood.I have personally led and participated in Holy Humor services and I know, once you overcome the initialhesitancy, it is a wonderful experience for the whole church. The choir is helping to design the service, the children will have a part, and everyone is welcome to experience the joy of the Lord. Need someideas? Check out www.joyfulnoiseletter.com and look under Holy Humor Sunday.See you on Holy Humor Sunday, February 14. I might even wear my flamingo hat or should Iwear my Groucho Marx glasses?-Pastor Cyndi

Thiswonderful hymn encompasses the whole Lentenseason as it asks us to look at the wonder of thecross, and also vividly paints Christ's agony anddeath on the cross. Watts lived in turbulent times, and as we look at his life, and the words that he haswritten, it is easy to see the parallels withcontemporary society. You may choose daytime orevening sessions. Pastor Cyndi will lead the class onWednesday mornings in the Lounge, 11:00 am-12noon, beginning February 24 and ending March 24.Paul Hyde will facilitate on Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30 pmat his home, February 23 through March 23.THE NEXT PASTOR'S BOOK STUDY will be onWednesday, March 3, at 7 pm. There’s no definitivestory, but most revolve around the imprisonment of St.Valentine for his disregard of Roman laws. Many legends are also associated with Valentine’sDay. For example, because birds seemed to arrive andmate in some countries in mid-February, humancouples came to be called “love birds.”In 1667, the first recorded Valentine card was printed.Today, people will give their sweethearts countlessmillions of cards and acres of heart-shaped boxes filledwith candy. But why wait for Valentine’s Day to sharelove with others? Remember Jesus’ words in John 13:34:“I give you a new commandment, that you love oneanother.”Page 7
