OPEN LETTER FROMCOACH CALLANical Education. This area is oftenmisunderstood, neglected, and evenlooked down upon. Yet this is probably the most influential position,in respect to teaching, that existsin the public school. My reason for writing this letteris to challenge young men and womento answer the call of working withyoung people in this area. PhysicalEducationis not just a play time andit is not just a period to blow offsteam. Instead, it is a time of selfrealization, a time of developingleadership and courage, and finally,a time of learning to live.Dear Friends:Cedarville College athletes arerapidly gaining recognition in thisworld of competition. Last year while competing with schools muchgreater in size, our athletes wonhonors in basketball, baseball, andtrack. This year they are makingtheir presence known by the caliberof their playing. These same boys, who have won and are winning ath letic acclaim, are also making theirmarks in the areas of Christian service. Weareproudofour1 6-2 baseball champions last year, and ·ourpresent 10-4 record in basketball, but this is not our total program. Wehave a vast number of students whoparticipate each week in our intramuralprogram and through this program they are developing the traitsfor a normal Christian life.We all agree that the ideas of winning and participating are important, but the participation must end soon, and then what will the lasting resultsbe? This question is the real challenge of our hearts. Our athletes major in manycourses of study here at Cedarvilleand these courses lead to varied avenues of service, but the avenue ofservice I am concerned with is Phys-This informal, yet vital program, lends itself to Christian service. Weneed men and women who are dedicated to serving Christ through theavenue of Physical Education. Themessage of a life lived and an example set may be accomplised bydedicated Christian Physical Education teachers.
