Taking ActionWe are living amidst a pressing brain health crisis. It is estimated that more than 19 million adults in the U.S.and more than 260 million people worldwide suffer from depression, demonstrating an existing worldwidebrain health pandemic that was previously hidden, which has been exacerbated and brought to light by theCOVID-19 pandemic (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, WHO). Brain health isextremely nuanced, as many factors – biological, social, economic, and more – contribute to overall wellbeingand the incidence of brain disorders in our communities. Because of this, as well as other factors brought onby the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be difficult for individuals with brain disorders to receive a diagnosis,treatment, and the support that they need.Sage wants to change this and fearlessly lead the way to create a world with better brain health – not only bychanging the treatment options available for individuals with debilitating brain disorders, but by changing theway we think about and support brain health for everyone. Brain health applies to every single one of us; it isa part of every person’s health and overall wellbeing. Why It MattersMore broadly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost one in everyfive adults experiences mental illness. In addition, more than 70 percent of adults experience symptomsof stress. This can impact physical health, as mental health disorders are highly correlated with theincidence of diabetes and cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular, bone, and joint diseases. Mentalillness, stress, and other health conditions affect all areas of life and daily functioning, including work –they can significantly impact job performance, engagement, and communication.This highlights the extent to which many people struggle with brain health in some way. Wellness Offerings: Physical ExerciseWeeklyFitnessClassesSage partners with professional fitness trainerJosh Fox from Dirty Water Fitness to offer aweekly group fitness class that our employeescan participate in. One day per week,employees can do a 30-minute core workoutled by Josh, free of charge to them.For employees who want to slow down, weoffer a 30-minute group meditation sessionas well as a 45-minute gentle flow yogaclass in the morning. These classes aretaught by Jenna Hussey, a highlyexperienced yoga student and instructorwho focuses on teaching mindfulness topromote stress reduction, wellbeing, and asense of community.Sage partners with another organization that is localto the Boston area called InnerCity Weightlifting(ICW) to offer a different type of fitness class to ouremployees for two other days throughout the week.ICW provides two 45-minute full body strengthtraining sessions for our employees exclusively. Dueto the proximity to our Cambridge office, Sage partners withthe Cambridge Athletic Club (CAC) so that our employeescan receive 50% off of a CAC gym membership. How do we achieve this? Well, one thing thathas been true for Sage since the beginning is that food hasalways been a magnet for us – it brings Sageans together andgathers us to connect and collaborate.In our offices, Sage uses a grocery delivery company calledPeapod to maintain fully stocked fridges that are full of fresh,brain health-promoting food, which employees can eat formeals and snacks throughout the day.
