Sports BoostersTowson High School Campus Renovatione strongly believe athletics andacademics go hand in hand, but in spite of our success inthe classroom, little has been done overthe past decades to upgrade our campus and athletic fields. Our athletic facilities suffer fromneglect and overuse. New Permanent Stadium FlagpoleTowson High School Alumni AssociationCARA WALEN PHOTOGRAPHYBYTannual award given out in his honor tothe player who, even in the direst of circumstances would not be stopped.Mike Godzick gave his heart toTowson High School and in passing, heasked for his ashes to be spread on ourstadium field. With that kind of love anddedication we felt it our duty to honorhim. Being a veteran we felt it best tohonor Mike with this flagpole. We thankthe George and Ruth Babylon Foundationand the efforts of the Towson SportsBoosters Association for this generousgift.Coincidentally, this year marks the200th anniversary of the War of 1812which has great significance to ourcountry, our town, and our band. Theirtheme this year is “An American Band.”To go along with our band’s theme thisyear, you will notice two new flags on ourflagpole. First, we will have the (15 Star)Star-Spangled Banner Flag (a replica ofthe one that flew over Ft. McHenry thenight our national anthem was written byFrancis Scott Key), and a new TowsonGenerals Flag below our state flag thisyear. PHOTOhe Towson Sports BoostersAssociation would like to thank theGeorge and Ruth BabylonFoundation and Director Charles B.Jones (Class of 1977) for a new permanent flagpole on our stadium field. Thisflagpole has special meaning as it is dedicated to one of our own alumni in MikeGodzick (Class of 1965).Nelson Coffin, Towson Times sportseditor and long time friend of MikeGodzick had these words to share aboutMike. “I don’t think I’ve ever met someone as dedicated to a school’s athleticprogram as Mike, particularly when youaccount for his disability. Unfortunately,Mike was involved in a serious auto accident when he was 24 years young, rendering him a quadriplegic for the rest ofhis life. However, he refused to allow thatto stop him.”“Although he played JV basketball atTHS (and was brought up to the varsityfor the playoffs), Mike neverplayed lacrosse for theGenerals. But he developed alove for the sport that wouldlater grow into a coachingposition for a University ofTampa club team. After returning to his native Baltimore,Mike devoted his lax acumento following the Generals, motoring as best he could inhis wheelchair to as manygames as possible. Mike wouldattend practices and games, watching for any tidbit thatmight be helpful to CoachDase. Through observationand numerous conversationswith Coach Dase, Mike learnedas much or more about theGenerals laxers than anyone, including Coach Dase. Many were thenight that Coach Dase would receive acall from Mike about the Generals’ midfield rotation, attack unit or defensiveschemes. And if the Generals lost a game,I would get a late-night phone calldescribing how his beloved Generalswere sure to bounce back intheir next game.”“In short, Mike lived andbreathed THS lax and wasproud of witnessing several oftheir championship finals inthe 1990s. In his later years, itbecame too difficult for Miketo attend games, althoughphone calls to Coach Dase andme to talk about THS lax continued unabated, and was stillgreatly appreciated. Mike died tooyoung, but he gave a great deal to hisalma mater before he passed.”Our Boys’ Lacrosse team has anPictured from left to right: Charles B. Jones (Class of1977), Jeff Walen (Athletic Director), Coach Randy Dase(Class of 1972 and friend to Mike Godzick), and Dr. JaneBarranger (Principal). Coach Dase is holding the Boys’lacrosse Award Plaque in Mike Godzick’s name. Thisplaque is on display outside the gymnasium.5

I was fortunate that shetook the time to share them with me. Itwas fascinating how the student bodyreflected the country’s commitment toWWII as the book got smaller, the committees reflected students’ focus on thewar effort and in the last year, Bettyrecorded where many of the seniors weregoing after graduation.I am glad these books will find ahome and be cared for in the future.”Just in Time for theHolidays!A 5.00 plus 2.50shipping(free shipping forlifetime members!)
