I have to admit that overthe years, while I supported Towson Highathletics and was active during the yearsmy children attended Towson, I was notactive with the Alumni Association. I’mnot even sure I knew all that the association was doing. That has all changed this year withthe election of new officers and theaddition of new board members. I’mgetting to know Towson High Schoolall over again and helping to find waysto support the school and the students.Through the dedication of the previous board who worked long and hardto keep our association viable, moneyhas been raised and that money hasbeen used for scholarships for graduating seniors and for classroom supplies, equipment and materials to enhance the educational experience forcurrent students. The association alsomade contributions for the new turffield and scoreboard. With new people come new ideasabout ways to support Towson HighSchool’s students and teachers. Wehope to share all of the generous donations we receive equitably and with every part of the student body, across alldisciplines. Through the school’s administration, we reach out to department chairpersons and teachers askingthem what their needs are, those notcovered in the BCPS budget. There is so much negative newsabout public education in the media but at Towson High School, chil-dren are learning, being challenged tostretch their minds and dream theirdreams.Towson’s graduation ratecontinues to be exceptional. There ismuch to be proud of in these old hallways. The goal of the Alumni Association is to continue to support ourstudents as they strive for excellenceand the achieving of their goals. Wewelcome all of you and encourage youto get involved, either by making acontribution to the annual fund or byjoining us in person, working with faculty, staff and students.Kathryn McClelland Bojanowski (’75)UpcomingAlumniAssociationMeetingsThe Alumni Associationmeets in the school library the 3rd Tuesday ofthe month at 7:00pm. In MemoriamDavid A. DanielDavid A. Daniel, who taught Sciencein the ‘70s and early ‘80s, died June 16,2016 at the age of 69.Frances Shores MeginnisFrances Shores Meginnis, a memorable Towson High School English teacher, who taught from 1953 to 1967, andwhose lessons were lessons in life, as wellas in literature and writing, died July 7th,2016 at the age of 95.“Her class was pretty rigorous anddemanding. She had a sense of humorthat was dry and sarcastic and not allstudents liked her at first,” said Mr. HalPiper, who studied with Mrs. Meginnisfrom 1955 to 1956. “You quickly realizedshe was asking you to be better than youwere, and there were lots of challenges,”he said.F. Carvel Payne ’60 recalls, “Youquaked in your seat when you were inher class, as she did not suffer fools silently.” And with a laugh “She wantedyou to know that your latest epistle wasnot a gift to God’s literary world. ButI loved her, and most people did welllater in their college English classes because of her.”In recognition of their teacher, a6group of former students led by Mr.Payne, established the Frances ShoresMeginnis Award, a memorial fund thatannually honors a student who has overcome challenges and who shows greatpromise in the humanities.Mrs. Meginnis was alive to see thevideo of the first annual presentation ofthe award given in her honor at the Senior Awards Program on May 26th, 2016.For more information on Mrs.Meginnis life and the challenges that sheovercame, see the full obituary online atthe Baltimore 421942Mary PhillipsMary Phillips, who taught Englishand Home Economics from 1953 to1957, died January 7th, 2003 in Annapolis at the age of 90.Additional MemorialsWilliam Logan10/5/2009Edgar Price8/21/1988Doris Britton EkinAlice Byers HosierRuby Heuisler08/1999Thelma Fries Gross4/27/2016Esther Miller Sims1/29/1995Maude Fahey Condiff7/1985Jane Huntley Klingelhofer 6/15/2009Phyllis Burgess Moriarty 12/24/1998Lillian Forthuber Gunther 11/11/2001Douglas Sparks12/213/23Therma Henning Schneider 1/11/2011Arthur Deoms1/13/1996Ralph Hoen7/10/2010Mary Woolen Hughes2/3/2009Mae Peterson Kocher5/1/2009Mary Morfe Michel12/30/2014Raymond Byron9/1993Bertha Southwick Crowther12/20/2015Harry Kakel1/24/2014Grace Reese NielsonBenjamin Wilson3/17/2010Roy Dorfler8/30/2015Shirley Waters Bayle3/20/2016Lillian Chaffman Fitch2/28/2005Marion White Roettger7/5/1988Helen Stapleton Schnick 12/21/2009William Rauck10/2/2014Eliot SperryLavonne Leichsenring9/12/1996Pearl Kearney Long5/4/2016Mildred Streett Shanklin 4/20/2016John Francis12/23/2014Ann Reisinger Frost2/19/2013Richard GroningerMarjorie Jones MartinEileen Zulauf 19531953195419551955Doris Lee Scheller2/6/2011Gladys Jackson Tenney1/20/2015Ruth Bell Cockey5/4/2016Jerry Prodoehl Hunt6/21/2015Richard Loehe2/19/2016Joan Jelliman Krug1/4/2015Robert Myers9/19/2014Virginia Crue Hawk2/22/2015Jeanne Hoff Neuman4/11/2016Jack Scarborough3/8/2004Norman StrickerBob Timlin3/15/2013Chuck EdmondsRaymond Fitzberger6/13/1974Minnetta Lowery Groom 12/4/2012Robert O’NeillRichard Perry1/17/1996Mary Wyatt Whittle6/18/2014Bonnie Benton Brown9/19/2016Gene Hiser8/20/2014Ellen Leedy Chicknoski7/5/2014John Cyphers4/7/2016Gerry Colestock Darnaby 6/26/2015Louis Hoen9/9/2007William Wolfe8/5/2014Pat Cannaday Fahy3/15/2016Bobbie Perry Jones2/9/2016William Ashburn4/18/2004Kenneth TaylorDick Woodward4/17/2016Barbara Bishop Ensor8/6/2016Ed Suess1/13/2016Patricia Adolph HollandEleanor Snyder RamslandGary Maddox8/26/2016Dolores Wright Barnickel 7/30/2012Donald Huber7/24/2016Continued on page 7
