Early instructionemphasizes the acquisition of core knowledge of the keyacademic disciplines that students use as a foundation fordeeper exploration in the upper grades. Widely regardedaround the world as the most rigorous and comprehensivecourse of study at the high school level, the InternationalBaccalaureate (IB) Programme is integral to the TBLScurriculum. All academic disciplines are taught through the lensof inquiry to emphasize critical thinking and problem solving.The school cultivates a diverse community of lifelong learnerswho discover their passions through a collaborative andsupportive network of students, educators, and alumni. Drawing upon a long tradition ofacademic success, The Bronx High School of Science preparesstudents to flourish in the best colleges and universities. Theschool creates the leaders and visionaries of the future. Includedamong the school’s alumni are eight Nobel Prize winners and sixPulitzer Prize winners.Academic program: All students are required to completefour years of study in Latin, history, mathematics, English, andscience, at least two years of a world language, and one yearof art history. Many of our classes feature public speakingexercises such as Declamation and Socratic Seminars, as wellas oral presentations of scientific labs and mathematicalproblem sets. In addition, many of our classes feature writingexercises such as science lab reports, Spanish portfolios andessays, math modeling papers, and Latin sight translations.The IB Programme’s emphasis on student-led inquiry, globalperspectives, international mindedness, and personal integrityconform perfectly with the ideals on which the school wasfounded. In addition to rigorous class work, IB emphasizesindependent thinking and community engagement. In order toearn the IB Diploma, students are expected to complete anindependent research project that culminates in a 4,000-wordessay paper on a subject of choice, a task which correlatesclosely to college-level research writing. They are required totake a two year epistemology course called Theory ofKnowledge (TOK) that challenges students to
