Widely regardedaround the world as the most rigorous and comprehensivecourse of study at the high school level, the InternationalBaccalaureate (IB) Programme is integral to the TBLScurriculum. In all classes, students experience a strong andconsistent emphasis on structured writing and public speaking,as well as numerous opportunities for analytical thinking, whichprepares them for the challenges of college work.75 West 205th Street, Bronx, New York 10468Phone: (718) 817-7700Website: www.bxscience.eduEmail: golanc@bxscience.eduOverview: The Bronx High School of Science educates anacademically gifted community of learners through a rigorousScience, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)curriculum. All academic disciplines are taught through the lensof inquiry to emphasize critical thinking and problem solving. The school cultivates a diverse community of lifelong learnerswho discover their passions through a collaborative andsupportive network of students, educators and alumni. Utilizinga balance of theoretical and applied learning, students explorecomplex problems and have access to a rich offering ofresources to develop solutions. In addition to rigorous class work, IB stressesindependent thinking and community engagement. In order toearn the IB Diploma, students are expected to complete anindependent research project that culminates in a 4,000-wordessay paper on a subject of choice, a task which correlatesclosely to college-level research writing. They are required totake a two year epistemology course called Theory ofKnowledge (TOK) that challenges students to consider theways knowledge is constructed, and which culminates in afinal research paper and presentation. In addition, studentsare required to engage in activities involving creativity, serviceand reflection over an 18-month period. Creativity, action, and service (CAS) may include volunteering or engagingmeaningfully with the TBLS community and the largercommunity.
