From the PastorThe Deacon’s JournalIn our Gospel this weekend we hear of the commandmentgiven by Christ to love God and love your neighbor. Thisshort and clear commandment expressed the whole of thelaw of God. Today we don't like to think of God's word as alaw, so we can say simply that this short statement sums upthe whole of our Christian life. It is so very simple and yet sovery difficult.Loving God has always been a bit difficult because God isnot present the way that another person is present. This difference also has made loving God easier because we are never quite sure what it means to love God. We do know thatwe must prefer God and His Word, (Scriptures) to all otherrealities. The invitation to love God and to love our neighbor becomes very concrete in the love of neighbor. It is not justany neighbor that we must love, but the neighbor who isright in front of us. The neighbor is not the person who livesnext door but any human being who happens into our life. This neighbor is especially the person that we don't want tohelp, the person who may have injured us, the person whoseems unworthy of our help, the person who will take moreof our time than we want to give. Always in the Gospel wefind this teaching of the Lord Jesus: love those who don'tlove you; love those who are your enemies; love those whoslap you and injure you.As we consider this invitation to love, we can understandmore completely why our ancestors in the faith were notalways faithful to the Lord. Time and time again they turnedaway from God’s teaching—like those given to them by Moses in our First Reading this weekend. The Scriptures continue to teach what God requires of us. Yet, it is much easier tochange the meaning of the Scriptures or ignore them altogether than it is to change our hearts. So in the history ofour faith, both in the Old and the New Testaments, we findthe tendency to turn away from God, the tendency tochange what God wants into what we want.We can allow our hearts to be changed or we can moveahead with hearts hardened by doing things our own way.Jesus calls to us today to: Love God and love our neighbor—may we do so with all our heart, all our soul, all ofour mind, and all our strength.- Deacon Jim -I wish everyone a blessed week!Fr. SteveALL SOULS DAY MASS will be held on Tuesday, No-vember 2 at 6:30pm at Holy Ghost for all our parishioners who have passed away in the last year. Pleasekeep their families and loved ones in your prayers.SCRIP NEWS: Please remember scrip for your groceries, gas, etc. In order to keep the program going, we needyour participation. If you don’t have a student in theHoly Family School system or Religious Education program, your scrip credit would go to the parish. Anyquestions please call the parish office at 583-1709.In our opening prayer for this weekend, we pray thesewords, “offering God right and praiseworthy service.” Today we are challenged with the call to Love God and LoveOur Neighbor. This is how we offer God right and praiseworthy service. It is no less than that, and no more thanthat. If you ask someone if they love the Lord and have giventheir life to Jesus, they will say yes. If you ask them to sharewhat they do in living out their love of the Lord and givingtheir life to Jesus, they may struggle to answer that question. When we think of loving God and loving our neighbor wethink of perfection. Perfection is not where we are at. Perfection is something we should be working toward. Perfection will be attained through the direction our lives ourmoving in and we set that direction.Have we set the direction of praying, of reading scripture,of being an active member of the Christian Community (theparish), and of serving however we can and wherever wecan, meeting need?I have heard it said, Jesus is Lord of all, or He is not Lordat all. If we set the direction of our lives to perfection, wewill be growing to perfection. And in our journey to andreaching the goal of perfection we will be living Jesus asLord of all in our lives.Just two thoughts for our direction setting:“We live simply so others may simply live.”“A smile is a curve that can straighten out a lot of things”ALL SAINT’S DAY, TRUNK OR TREAT. This year AllSaints Day (November 1st) falls on a Monday and assuch it is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. Wewill however offer two Masses on that day to honorour saints and pray for their intercession. We will celebrate Mass on that day at 7:30 am at Holy GhostChurch and 5:30 pm Mass at Holy Trinity Church. Forany children wishing to get some extra goodies (candytreats), we will be holding a TRUNK OR TREAT in theparking lot of the church following the 5:30 pm Massat Holy Trinity.
