February 2019February Shabbat andWorship CalendarThe Chutzpah to Seek and to FindFriday, February 1 6 pmKabbalat Shabbat Service withTorah readingabbi Menachem Mendle of Kotzk once asked hisdisciples if they could tell him where God dwelled.Surprised they answered, “How can you ask such a thing? Is not the whole world filled with God’s glory?!” Then theRabbi answered, “God dwells wherever we let God in.”A child was playing hide-and-seek with a friend. Aftersome time, he realized that his friend had abandoned thegame, and he ran crying to his grandfather. “I hid, but my friend didn’t look forme.” His grandfather lamented, “It is the same with God. God says, ‘I hide, but nobody seeks me.’”A 10-year-old girl is hard at work in class drawing a picture. The teacherapproaches and asks, “What are you doing?” The girl replies, “I am drawingGod.” “But nobody has ever seen God,” says the teacher. The girl looks upand responds, “They will in a minute.”We may know that God is everywhere, but we still have to seek God and bewilling to let God in. And sometimes knowing and searching are not enough.Sometimes we need to see God.This year the Our Tent Faculty had been learning from a book entitled TheChutzpah Imperative: Living a Life that Matters. In it the author, Rabbi EdwardFeinstein, dares us to have the chutzpah, the guts, to ask the big, the deep, and the challenging questions. Doing so, he posits, will lead to a moremeaningful Judaism and a more meaningful life. The theme for Our Tent this year has been “Dare to ” and for the nextthree months I would like us to dare to ask the questions we may not havehad the chutzpah to ask before.Friday, February 8 6 pmKabbalat Shabbat ServiceCome Grow With Me! From Brett’s Desk:Did you know thatFebruary is my favoritemonth of the year? Ok,maybe not, but I do lookforward each year to thearrival of February. Since Ibegan working at ST-KA, wehave taken a few days each February tovisit the state of Florida and to see ourcongregational snowbirds. It is a tremendous opportunity tospend quality time with some of ourcongregants who are not in Clevelandduring the bulk of our programming year.I’ll have updates on all the excitingthings that are happening at ST-KA.As with most years, I’ll be there forabout four days and will be trying to visitas many congregants as possible. Ifyou’re in Florida and I haven’t been intouch, please reach out ASAP to DaleHopkins in our office and let’s see if wecan still squeeze in a visit.I’ll be there from February 12–15.A few thoughts about development. Toall who played our first year of BrownsFootball Squares – thank you! Thefundraiser was a success and theweekly e-mails and updates from chair,Michael Polster had us laughing (orcrying) each week! I am especiallygrateful to those who chose to contributetheir winnings back to Temple. I lookforward to an even more successfulBrowns Football Squares fundraisernext year.We are still raising money for thisyears’ annual campaign. Our goal of 36,000 is in reach, but we need everymember of the congregation to give theirbest possible gift. If you haven’t yetgiven to the 2018–19 annual campaign, please do so now. You can donateonline, sending in a gift, or by calling theoffice. Thank you!B’shalom,Brett Shankman,Executive Directorbshankman@suburbantemple.org2Kids’ Book BankIt was a little over one yearago that you read a briefarticle here, about theCleveland Kids Book Bank(KBB.) To recap—it is anamazing organization, which distributes booksFREE (now over 1 million books) to needychildren. We at ST-KA are now a part of it. Ifyou haven’t done so before, please checkout their website: kidsbookbank.org.Flash forward to the present—ST-KA hasheld two (with another pending) mitzvahevents at KBB and collected many boxesof children’s books. These have been takento KBB and subsequently delivered todozens, if not hundreds of children in theCleveland area. The next phase of our involvement beganin October of 2018. ST-KA has committed tohelp with a Little Free Library (LFL.) Ourinitial goal is to stock one LFL, at least oncea month. We hope to ramp this up in thefuture. Kudos to Jan Lieblich, Susan GordonMerdler, and Susan Long who completedthis mitzvah at least once, during “their”month. Individuals and families have signedup to do this through June.Right now, volunteers for July and beyondare being signed up. It seems far ahead, butremember, you are only committing to doingsomething once during that month! Pleaselet me, or the Temple office know if you cando this mitzvah. Please continue to bringyour books to the box in the lobby (yes, it’sstill there!) The books will either get to theKBB or to the LFL.Thanks so much,Ellen Weberelleweb1@me.com260.414.8128Meet Keesha SellarsWe are very excited to welcome Keesha Sellars to theSuburban Temple – Kol Ami family. We had beenin Ft. Wayne, Indiana for the past 30-plusyears, but both Ed and I are fromPhiladelphia originally, and certainly identifywith that culture, despite our years in theMidwest. When it came time to retire, andour daughter (Jackie Greenfield) and herfamily were obviously settled here, thedecision to come to Cleveland was easy. Anadditional factor encouraged the movehere—some familiarity with the city andenvirons. I attended Case Western from1970-1975, graduating with degrees inPsychology and Nursing. I remained closewith several of my roommates, who are stillhere in town.I didn’t become involved with KN untilabout a year after we arrived. (Building andmoving into a new home and being a caretaking grandma to Samantha took up mostof that first year.) Becoming active in KN wasanother easy decision—here were activitiesthat were important and familiar, and womenwho were friendly and welcoming. Thatkeeps me involved. I give some time andenergy, and I receive multiple rewards, inbeing part of a group, of friendship, and ofstimulating new ideas and activities. Beingactive in KN has helped me feel more a partof the ST-KA “family.”Ellen serves as the secretary for KolNashim and is the co-chair of the CalvaryChurch dinner Tikkun Olam experience, andco-ordinates ST-KA’s participation in theKids’ Book Bank’s Little Free Library.Hope to see you soon,Susan Gordon MerdlerKol Nashim PresidentSTKAKolNashim@gmail.com
