AURORA BEARING COMPANYManufacturing and worldwide supplier of the highest quality rodends and spherical bearings - anywhere!GENERAL INFORMATIONConsult our engineering department for materials to fit yourspecial application. Materials used in the standard catalog itemsare outlined on the appropriate detail page.Known primarily for a high quality product and a strongcommitment to customer service, the firm dramatically increasedits market coverage and now serves nearly every industry andaerospace market. These markets include among others: textileand packaging machinery, machine tools, business machines, recreation and exercise equipment, agricultural and off highwayvehicles, commercial transportation and high performance racingvehicles as well as military equipment and commercial air andspace craft. These bearings incorporate the single piece race typeconstruction, also providing excellent ball-to-race conformity. They can be re-lubricated through an annular groove in the outerrace with two interconnecting holes positioned at 180 degrees.Various metals may also be substituted in these types of units tomeet special requirements. Recommended housing bores aregiven on pages 58-60.In 1971 a new company entered the rod end and sphericalbearing marketplace. This new firm, Aurora Bearing Company, soon became a major force in the rod end industry.Aurora Bearing offers a complete line of standard rod end andspherical bearings. We also design and manufacture specialbearings to meet a variety of applications that require customengineered units or special materials. Now marketing products worldwide, Aurora Bearing fields a verycompetent sales force that is available to assist and provideyou with a practical and sound solution to rod end and sphericalbearing application problems and challenges.PRODUCT INFORMATIONENGINEERING DATAROD ENDSAurora Bearing Company rod ends are, unless noted, manufactured utilizing two construction styles. They are of thetwo or three-piece type. Both are made with the solid, or onepiece, race construction method and feature the advantages ofmetal-to-metal contact between bearing components. (PTFE tometal interface may also be incorporated when specified). The standard two-piece style consists of a body and precisionground heat treated steel ball. This type of construction allowsthe rod end body to carry a greater radial static load. Thisconfiguration also offers greater misalignment capabilities. Avariety of materials and plating options for the component partsin this series are available. Any cold-formable steel in stainlessand alloy steel categories can be specified for the body, and allhardenable alloys such as 52100 and 440C stainless steel maybe employed for the ball component. The three-piece style consists of a body, ball and race. Thistype of unit, offering fully swaged bearing construction, featuresthe advantages of maximum spherical conformity betweenthe ball and race. It also offers flexibility in that many differenttypes of materials can be interchanged in each component part, providing combinations that can be tailored to meet just aboutany application requirement.PTFE LINED ROD ENDS ANDSPHERICAL BEARINGSComposite PTFE lined races are available as noted in mostrod end bearing units and all spherical bearings. The steelrace has a self-lubricating liner; a PTFE impregnated wovenfabric, chemically bonded to the inner diameter of the race, andis denoted by the suffix “T”. All Aurora Bearingliner styleoptions are maintenance free and offer improvedfrictional characteristics. They have been developed by Auroraengineers specifically for bearing use, and are exclusive toAurora Bearing products.Except as noted, AT1400 is supplied as the standard liner in allcommercial units. It is designed primarily to satisfy the demandsof the commercial/industrial market as well as most highperformance applications. This liner can be used in temperaturesranging from -65 to 250 F.www.aurorabearing.com Fax 630-859-0971Over the years, Aurora Bearing has retained its original businessphilosophy of furnishing a high quality product at competitiveprices. In addition, the company’s initial goals of providingprompt delivery and furnishing service with a personal touchhave been rigidly maintained.SPHERICAL BEARINGSAT3200 is an ultra-high performance liner fully qualified toSAE-AS81820 (formerly MIL-B-81820), developed for militaryand aircraft/aerospace applications. This liner offers higher loadcarrying capacity as well as greatly increased dynamic wearcharacteristics and can be used in temperatures ranging from-65 to 325 F. This liner is standard on all military specificationbearings manufactured by Aurora Bearing, as well as certainhigh performance commercial bearings used in the automotiveracing industry. It can also be specified on other lined productsmanufactured by Aurora Bearing where demanding applicationsrequire its superior performance characteristics.AT2100 is used in commercial units with stainless steel raceconstruction. It is tailored for applications with aqueousenvironments. Aurora Bearing also has available a variety ofalternate liner configurations to suit special requirements.Aurora 2 piece rod ends with the prefix “V” use Aurora’s jacketedcomposite liner, resulting in the benefits of a PTFE lined bearingat an economical price.Information on these and other liner configurations can befound at www.aurorabearing.com.3

www.aurorabearing.com Fax 630-859-0971ULTIMATE RADIAL STATICLOAD CAPACITY ROD ENDSThe ultimate radial static load capacity is based uponthe minimum mechanical properties of the designconfiguration in the stressed area. The ultimateradial static load capacity called out in the rod endspecification charts is defined as a single cycle, unidirectional applied load to cause ultimate failure.Operating loads should be based on the static loadratings, incorporating appropriate safety factors to suitthe application. When a rod end is to be applied infull rotation, the surface speed of the ball should bekept below 20 feet per minute or the rotational speedshould be below 100 RPM, whichever is lower, withthe operating loads not to exceed 10% of the ultimateradial static load.Radial static limit loads are maximum static based onthe maximum permanent set in the bearing race of0.2% of the ball diameter. If greater permanent setcan be allowed or if alternate race materials are usedconsult our engineering department for change factors.Operating loads are based on the radial static limit loadrating and appropriate safety factors should be utilizedto suit the application.Load ratings listed in the standard detail pages areapplicable to rod ends supplied without grease fittings.Load ratings for units employing fittings may be affecteddue to lighter cross section in the stressed area.A rod end or spherical bearing’s ability to misalignis measured by the degree of angle the ball canaccommodate without interference. For information on the rod end radial staticload ratings with fittings and other specific loadrating information, consult the Aurora Bearingengineering department.AXIAL STATICLOAD CAPACITY ROD ENDSAxial static load capacity is the force that is appliedthrough the bore of the ball. For Aurora two-piecerod ends, maximum axial static load capacity isrecommended to be 15 percent of the ultimate radialstatic load capacity. For three-piece rod ends, maximum axial static load capacity is generallyrecommended as 10 percent of ultimate radial staticload capacity. It should be noted, however, that onthree-piece units factors such as race material, bodymaterial and dimensions may affect axial static loadcapacity. For further information, consult the AuroraBearing engineering department.a1a1a2FIGURE 2a2 Sin-1 WA - Sin-1 HAFIGURE 1a1 Sin-1 WD - Sin-1 HDMax axial load is recommended at 20 percent of theradial static load. Extreme care should be used onselecting a sufficiently strong housing to accept thistype of bearing.BEARING MISALIGNMENTThe angle of misalignment in a rod end is limited bythe ball width and head diameter as shown in figure1. This arrangement is called a clevis mount, and isthe type represented in the standard rod end detailpages. If added misalignment is necessary, this canbe accomplished by utilizing spacers between theclevis mounting and ball face, or by using special rodends designed to meet specific requirements.Misalignment angle in a spherical bearing is limitedby the ball and race width with respect to the balldiameter, illustrated in figure 3. This is the mountingtype represented in the standard detail pages forspherical bearings.Mounting arrangements for spherical bearings such asshown in figures 2 through 4 are also used with rodends. The misalignment angle is then calculated byselecting the proper formula below.ANGLE OF MISALIGNMENTa3a24RADIAL STATIC LIMIT LOADCAPACITY SPHERICAL BEARINGSa3a4a4FIGURE 3a3 Sin-1 WR - Sin-1 RHFIGURE 4a4 Cos-1 RB - Sin-1 HRReference LettersB - Ball BoreM - Outer Race ChamferD - Head Diameter of Outer Race DiameterR - Ball DiameterH - Housing WidthA - (D-2M)2 H2W- Ball Width
