It was a very coldday down in the 20s on ourmountain area when mywife asked me to installfour solar motion detector lights in our backyard. She wanted the lights tobetter keep an eye on ourtwo dogs when they go inthe backyard at night totake care of business.I have no idea why Ididn’t wait for a warmerday to do this chore but itdoes show you how littleI think. I went down tothe basement to locate theright screwdriver I wouldneed. Then came backupstairs and looked for amarker so I could mark theplace the screws shouldgo. My wife and I wentdown into the backyardand she picked the fourspots she wanted for thesolar lights.I left a solar light at eachspot that she wanted. ThenI fished out of the box thetiny installation screws ina small plastic bag. Eachlight had two small holes, one on each side to attachthem to our wooden fence.I installed without a problem but I was short onescrew for the last light. The two holes in the solar light were so smallthat I had to use a flashlight to spot them. Thetwo screws for each lightwere so small that I probably should have usedtweezers to hold themwhen I screwed them intothe fence. I had a smalldrill bit that did the trickto start a hole in the fencefor the screw. After theholes were drilled, I held ascrew between my two arthritic fingers and startedturning the screwdriver.By some miracle, I wasable to mount the first onewithout any mishaps. After that, my luck ran out.I went back down to thebasement where I keepmy tools and have someextra screws. All thescrews were too big. Finally, I convinced myselfthat I could force this bigger screw into the hole. Itook two of them just incase I lost the one remaining screw. I went back upthe stairs and then downinto the yard. By nowmy breath was producinga fog with each breath Itook. I drilled the last twoholes and took the one re-I was on the second solar light, holding the tinyscrew between two fingersand attempting to screwthe screw in place whenthe screw slipped out ofmy fingers to the ground. You would think I wouldfind it right away sinceI was down on my handsmaining screw that fit andpromptly let it slip out ofmy fingers. This time Ionly looked for a minuteor so before I gave up.UsingthetwoI BUY COMIC BOOKSAND BASEBALL CARDSlargerscrews I was able to mountthe remaining solar light. So now I had two loosescrews which some people who know me wouldsay is not a surprise. Page 6SENIOR REPORTEROnline@www.seniorreporterofoc.comJANUARY 2021‘POW!’ ‘OOF!’‘CRASH!’By Randal C. Hill“Batman” featured an ear-candy theme song, barbaric deathtraps, innovative gadgets, andrepulsive villains (each onerepresented by a celebrityguest). The show was playedfor laughs all the way andpoked fun at melodrama whileinjecting pop-culture references into the action. With all thisrolled into a presentation bestdescribed as “camp”— something so bad or corny as to bedeclared “good” — how couldit have missed? The answer? It couldn’t. Anddidn’t. For a while.“Batman’s” executive producer was William Dozier. Beforehis 1966 – 1968 series wentinto production, Dozier readthrough numerous “Batman”comic books — he had neverread a comic book in his life— before admitting, “I had justthe simple idea of overdoing it,of making it so square and soserious that adults would findit amusing and kids would gofor the adventure.”The series was the ultimateDC Comics adaptation forthe small screen. Unveiled asa sometimes satirical, sometimes slapstick sitcom, “Batman” starred Adam West asbusinessman Bruce Wayne/Batman. West (born WilliamWest Anderson) earned a B.A. Degree in literature, thenworked as a military radioannouncer and a milkman before becoming a TV and movie actor. Burt Ward, a karateexpert, and former standouthigh-school athlete was attending college and workingin his father’s real-estate office when, just out of his teens,he earned the sidekick role ofDick Grayson/Robin. (In theprocess, Ward beat out futureTV star Lyle Waggoner.)Batman and Robin werecrime-fightinggoofballswho defended fictional Gotham City against a plethoraof preposterous villains whowere always involved in exaggerated situations. The “Dynamic Duo” heroes took thesesituations seriously, of course, which of course added to themerriment.TV’s “Batman,” the onlyprime time laughathon without a laugh track, was developed on the most ridiculous ofpremises: Two costumed andmasked vigilantes were working hand in hand (or hand inglove) with a bumbling policedepartment that was constantly baffled by the bad guys. Theingenious storylines featuredsimplistic morality in a humorous vein. In each episode,Batman and Robin pursueddubious clues that revealed thesupervillain’s plans and, in theend, always saw the pair capturing the evildoer.“Batman’s” producers broughtin as many wicked foes as possible, including the now-iconicRiddler (Frank Gorshin, JohnAstin), the Penguin (BurgessMeredith), the Joker (CesarRomero) and Catwoman (JulieNewmar, Eartha Kitt). The popularity of the first season’s show generated an avalanche of “Batman” merchandise, which included tradingcards, scale-model Batmobilekits, coloring books, boardgames, and Hot Wheels cars. The series offered 120 action-packed half-hour episodes. In time, however, thenovelty of the show began towear thin, and by the end ofthe third season, Batman hadlost much of its Batluster.Eventually, “Batman” wingedits way to lucrative Syndication Heaven. Later, Hollywood producers would try tocreate their comics-based TVseries by offering “The GreenHornet,” “Dick Tracy” and“Wonder Woman,” but by thenthe burned-out viewing publicsimply wasn’t buying it.BibliographyBooks:Edelstein, Andrew J. SENIOR REPORTERPage 9Online@www.seniorreporterofoc.com‘I Hear You Knocking’Dave EdmundsBy Randal C. HillIn early 1971, UK musicianDave Edmunds’s high-decibel guitar licks, nasal lead vocals, and floor-stomping beatmade his version of “I HearYou Knocking” a prime example of “pub rock.” Pub (shortfor “public house” or bar inEngland) rock was a musicalgenre popular in the UK duringthe early to mid-1970s. Loudand raw, its primitive approachto the music flew in the faceof the more refined “glam”style. (Think Queen and DavidBowie here.) Pub rock laid thefoundation for punk rock thatcame later in the decade.Born in Cardiff, Wales, in1944, Edmunds had driftedthrough several bands sinceage 10, when he and olderbrother Geoff formed a-rockin’ piano team called the Edmund Brothers Duo. Davelater played in a series of minor-league bar bands. His first taste of success cameas the lead guitarist in theWelsh rock trio Love Sculpture, which scored a BritishTop 5 single with the rapid-fireinstrumental “Saber Dance.”When the group disbanded,Edmunds turned to record production and worked with English rockabilly artist Shakin’Stevens, whose material wasSo, had Edmunds perhapsheard the earlier hit versionby an American woman? GaleStorm (born Josephine Cottle) was the pert, pretty, andsqueaky-clean star of the 1950sTV show “My Little Margie.”In 1955, she scored a No. 2Billboard winner with “I HearYou Knocking.” Storm’s biggest career hit was a blanchedoffering of an obscure R & B(rhythm-and-blues) tune fromearlier that year. Gale’s “cover” 45 was typical of manysuch releases at the time; major record labels frequentlybrought in white artists to copyR & B best-sellers (whichwere usually released on smallindependent labels) to targetrecord-buying teenagers withallowances to spend. While Edmunds may or maynot have heard the Storm disc,he was probably more takenwith the gritty original, a little-known recording by Smiley Lewis. Louisiana nativeLewis (born Overton Lemons)was once labeled by a musicjournalist “the unluckiest manin New Orleans.” It’s not hardto see why. Often when Lewisperformed in Big Easy bars, hewas handed only money fromthe tip jar. He usually rode togigs on city buses after toilingall day at manual labor. Smi-often culled from classic 1950sley’s nickname came from hisAmerican recordings. This ishaving no front teeth.when Dave became aware of“I Hear You Knocking.”During his recording tenure,Lewis cut a few R & B winners, but three of his most popular became pop best-sellersfor others. Besides Storm’ssmash, Smiley’s “Blue Monday” from 1954 became a Top10 single by Fats Domino twoyears later. And Lewis’s “OneNight (of Sin)” was cleaned upin 1958 to provide Elvis Presley his 27th Top 40 success.Edmunds could never repeatthe triumph of his one infectious hit. “I Hear You Knocking” became his signaturesong, though, and earned hima gold-disc award for international sales of 3 million 45s.BibliographyBooks:Broven, John.
