The title page to the 1830 edition of the Book ofThe Mormon Church has four books of scripture referredWorks." The Bible is accepted as theto as "The StandardWord of God "as far as it is translated correctly." (8th ArticleBook of Mormon,of Faith of the Mormon Church.) TheThe Pearl of Great Price, and the Doctrine and Covenantsare accepted as scripture without any qualifications whatsoever.Few Mormons are aware of the thousands of WORDCHANGES and nature of the changes that have been madein the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and thePearl of Great Price since the first editions.Because of limited space only a brief examination of someof the more serious changes will be given.THE BOOK OF MORMONThe Book of Mormon is claimed to be a translation of"gold plates" from "Reformed Egyptian" writings intoEnglish. The "gold plates" were supposedly taken back bythe angel "Moroni" and are not avallable for inspection.According to "The Testimony of Three Witnesses" whichIs printed in the front of every Book of Mormon, the followJoseph Smith as, "AUTHOR AND PROPRIETOR" All latereditions claim, "TRANSLATED BY JOSEPH SMITH.and Joseph Smith, Jun., "THE TRANSLATORJUN"There is no truth in the argument that the copyright lawsJoseph Smith to be named as the author. (1830 Edition, p. 25)"Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of THESON OF God,. . ." (I NEPHI 11:18)the Lamb of Goding claim is made about the translation of the "gold plates":"Andwetranslated byhis voice hath declared italso know that they have beenthe git and power of God, forunto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work isJoseph Smith himself stated:"I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was themost correct of any book on eath,. ." (Teachings oftheProphet Joseph Smith, p. 194)the "History of the Church" Joseph Smithclaimed that when he and the witnesses went to pray aboutAccordingtothe Book of Mormon, a voice spoke from heaven saying:"These plates have been revealed by the power of God,and they have been translated by the power of God. Thetranslation of them which you have seen is correct, and Icommand you to bear record of what you now see andhear" (Vol. 1, p. 55)With such claims we would expect to see the Book ofMormon free of changes. However, a close examinationreveals that over 4000 WORD CHANGES, including doctrinal changes, have been made since the first 1830 Edition. Asrecent as 1981 Mormon leaders have made approximately200 more WORD CHANGES. Many of the changes changethe meaning entirely as well as doctrine. The following are afew examples.isthe Eternal Father and the Saviorof the world;." (1830 Edition,p.32). . t h e Lamb of God is THE SON OF the EtemalFather, and the Savior of the world;. ." I NEPHI 13:40)."true."monas well as "The Testimony of Eight Witnesses," claimed.behold the Lamb of God, yea,Father!" ( NEPHI 11:21).the EverlastingGod,was judged of the world."(1830 Edition, p. 26)THE SON OF the everlasting God was judged of theworld;." (I NEPHl 11:32)The Church archives has a portion of the handwrittenmanuscript of the Book of Momon which was dictated byJoseph Smith and contains 3 of the 4 places that have justbeen mentioned. The words THE SON OF" does notappear in the handwritten manuscript in any of these placesand proves the current editions have been falsified.Another doctrinal change has been made concerningGod's unaterable decrees:YEAthat he allotteth unto men,DECREETH UNTO THEM DECREES WHICH AREUNALTERABLE, according to their wills;."." (1830. . .knowEdition, p.303)

wordsIn later editions 8wereI know that he allottethdeleted withunto menroindicationaccording to thelrwills," (Alma 29:4, 1967 Edition)The change seems to have been made to make it more inand Covenants, section 56.harmony with the Doctrinethe Lord told him:claimedSmithwhere JosephWherefore 1, the Lord, command and REVOKE, AS ITWherefore, I REVOKE THESEEMETH ME GOOD;.COMMANDMENT. . and give a NEW COMMAND.MENT."(verses 4-5)After years of criticism the leadership has decided toreinsert the phrase. t now reads:However, with the change of the negroes recelving thePriesthood in 1978, Mormon leaders are attempting tocover up this embarrassing teaching concerning skincolor. . .many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a WHITE and a delightsome people"(1830 Edition. p.117)PURE and delightsome people." (1840 Edition)WHITE and delightsome people." (All later editionsuntil 1981)"PURE anddelightsome people." (1981 Edition,IINephi 30:6)Mormon Church does not have thehandwrittenmanuscript of the Book of Mormon atdictated.this point the R.L.D.S. Church has the handwritten printersthe printer to set the type for thecopy, which was given tofirst printing. It too agrees with the 1830 Edition and says.Although the.I know that he allotteth unto men, YEADECREETH UNTO THEM DECREES WHICH AREUNALTERABLE, according to their wills, . "(Alma 29:4,1981 Edition)WHITE"The following is a reduced, photographic reproduction ofthe lower half of page 52 of the 1830 Edition of the BookofMormon with the changes marked to bring it into conformitywith modern editions. Notice the phrase "OR OUT OF THEWATERS OF BAPTISM" has been added. (Compare INephi 20:1) Not only does this phrase not appear in the 1830Edition and in the handwritten manuscript dictated by Joseph Smith, but it doesn't appear in the "Inspired Version" ofthe Bible by Joseph Smith. (see lIsaiah 48:1)THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTSThe "Doctrine and Covenants" contains revelations whichfewwere supposedly given by God to Joseph Smith and aothers. The revelations were first printed in "The Book ofCommandments" in 1833.Many of therevelations that appear in modern editions ofthe Doctine and Covenants have undergone drastic changesince they were first printed in the Book ofCommandments.Despite the following staterment by Joseph Fielding Smith, over 2,800 WORD CHANGES have been made in therevelations.CHAPTER VI.teach my brethreNow it camc to pas thattoI, Neplhi, didIbece thinga. Mormonism has consistentlytaught a dark skin is a sign of God's displeasure. The photographic reproducthe revelations first appeared in "The Book oftions are howCommandments."

The words surounding the revelations indicate thechanges that would have to be made to bring them Intoconformlty with modern editions of the "Doctrine andCovenants."When the following revelation was first printed In TheBook of Commandments chapter 4, verse 2 made thisstatement concerming Joseph Smith and the Bookof Mormon:and he has a gift to translate the book, and I HAVECOMMANDED HIM THAT HE SHALL PRETEND TO NOOTHER GIFT, for I WILL GRANT HIM NO OTHERGIFT(compare D. & C. 5:4)Later, Smith pretended to the gift of translating the BIbleand then the Book of Abraham. Rather thanrecelving a newrevelation conceming "other gifts," the old revelation wasfalstfied. This would allow the Church to accept Smith's laterelAPTER vi.Nerelalion/ron iov sMALASAANTED uY10 UWA(OER DEATN W(UNTI-fC)Le4,and.Varhin, h»ilatrh, e , vhen S-WAAT- 7.C)poKuion, Ye eeordASID,AATES-TAoU HAVE-TGIuntn ym hdearrantJoehDgnestiäel,aund burue rocur gheuhaME WHO SAAKEUWTOyou, SASAID9oyMirhyorreivOo Yoi-WJaATelholl, this shallynu say unt» hinn amanyi amTmAudlunve givceecrto"pynu.nie conou.7CCRUTo TwOSE PERSONSBC STOWED UPONWDW TIL mY PURPOSEWHICH I HAVEComMITTeDUNTOoUWALaulL0A u1o trunslate Uieoul1ltave enudnlef0 tuatADtDrOwrFinllevl açn h ualenIhae nwrnOH, 7HIS TCn1y *raaior a vT0SCPM- WGrBeratiasIISHED NEREAFTERSCt8EORDAINED ANDu : v e my wiis, lucy wuult nut belicveaNnL IT ISmmlali.anta u ti Cul nEY Aeu mr myor,"b:nuli, heynYOU-TC)lha-9slhoiul land neaoCOMmANDED YoUDaSÚTUrsg) aeYou NAVE T.Ccuerut Acrunut with me,Ui.aaIO THS S Yturnehare DTt o f, Joln uutiT D IM WorI a y Vng aou's utto thTot1/ ty eiy, verily Iny ANO SNLTdeiredsi uhis, viou aaltroRE NATO*INDRLDs, TONGVESin ijg ee 1ue tlouAuyoC y oPEorLi NAVOonld unto reterMMO PEORLOE,P'etertho 1odaidlunteauthstllthnt be 14tuline,hat is Uiat La,T a hed peyp me that he unighturiugcou GMTEST-Tbutoiyeloveuhhve dejyJ.YETTMANAMONG mENWEYEA,TNERE FOREAND AWNATDERTA KENHASWILLIMINUSMArEme waSNeTERNG ANGELjBE HEIRSFOR TWOSe Wio ALLMINISTEROF SMTOEARTH.AND I WLL MAKL THEEHIMB roREA GAEATER wokrMeWIM AS FLAPAIMGro miMISrER rORBAOTHER TAMES; ANDGNEMIN Is TRYTHISWILlUN TILPowERIANDCOME.WTTH:wATHE PEARL OF GREAT PRICEarndrnrrd oft'ie la.d » nor rhrticrDt uewHOgirtnARRIS W TRoalinnaylranie,ar, TruulgrdJreunllhn un (Uud up by himh e Jd0 l ileeire,aDE S/ALO-TC) C 'CitriaAatetwor.Aelyayutu au,arhsll boti have aceoTHRT HE miGHTwOPh1o yir deares, Je bdu Joy in hAIpo oRE, OR-WA.D.ranle-i(rSRO-IGThe revelation now claims this would be the "FIRSTGIFT and Smith would not receive another gift "UNTIL MYPURPOSE IS FULFILLED IN THIS."Yodierile, ternrdPurhrnWT OUwritings as scripture.AVE TCgirta te loryh and i t r , vaareny nnyirania, { , 6TAthey deired ts knsir uhether Joh n,lrYOu SMOULD-TCaaniUNrO YoU- TCOtVNTo yov-w.ADOITIOT ovTasTImOy- w.aThe next revelation was first printed in the Book ofCommandments, Chapter 6. The heading in moderneditons of the Doctrine and Covenants, Section 7, claimsthis revelation was translated from parchment by means ofthe "Urim and Thummim." ThePearl offollowing photocopy is of the 1851 editon ofthetheGreat Price. While JosephSmith was editor of the Church newspaper the "Times andSeasons" he printed his history and claimed the angel'sname was "NEPHI" (Vol. 3, p.753) He never made aretraction.
