EDUCATION THROUGH PARTNERSHIPDuke’s partners in South and Southeast Asia come from universities, localgovernments, and community-based organizations across the region.Current partnerships focus on global health solutions, continuingeducation, collaborative research, academic exchange opportunities andengagement of private sector partners.The most prominent of these partnerships is the Duke-NUS MedicalSchool in Singapore, which offers a four-year Doctor of Medicine degreemodeled on the Duke University School of Medicine curriculum. Theuniversity also offers a joint MD/PhD degree for students who arecommitted to intensive research-oriented careers combining biomedicalresearch with the practice of clinical medicine.Duke University India, based in Bangalore, facilitates research,partnerships, alumni connections, student learning and otherDuke activities across the country. The office provides in-countrysupport for existing programs and creates new opportunities forthe Duke community to engage with partners in India and acrossSouth Asia, including the World Health Organization and theIndian Institutes of Management.The office is led by executive director Namrata Jha.The Duke Center for International Development (DCID) collaborateswith a number of governments and agencies in South and Southeast Asia.Its partnership with the Universiti of Brunei Darussalam resulted in thedevelopment of a Master’s Program in Public Policy and Management atthe Universiti of Brunei Darussalam, which allows students to spend onesemester at Duke.Fall 2016

The Nicholas School of the Environmentworks closely with the Centre for WildlifeStudies in India on research related to wildlifeconservation and ecology.The Duke School of Nursing has partneredwith the University of Santo Tomas College ofNursing in the Philippines to bring five seniornursing students to Duke for a two-weekcourse on global health patterns.Duke Medicine works on healthcare in Indiawith a joint venture, clinical researchcollaboration with Medanta-The Medicity inGurgaon. The Medanta Duke ResearchInstitute (MDRI) is a 63-bed research site thatcombines the best of India’s clinical care withDuke’s clinical research excellence.EXPERIENTIAL LEARNINGDuke and IIT Gandhinagar(IITGN) have found commonground for collaborativeresearch, student exchangesand joint engagement ofprivate sector partners. Oneexample of partnershipbetween the two institutions isDuke professor Mike Bergin’sworks with IITGN researcherson air pollution’s impacts onthe effectiveness of solarpanels in India.In addition to the above partnerships, Duke sponsors a number ofopportunities for students to experience the cultures and customs of Southand Southeast Asia.Duke’s Global Education Office for Undergraduates operates a semesterlong program in India, providing students with the opportunity to spendseven weeks in Udaipur and Bangalore. Students live with local familiesand participate in fieldwork as they study health and health systems,development and poverty, and conservation.Duke Engage runs several programs in India. Service themes of theseprograms include women’s empowerment, children’s education and youthempowerment.Fall 2016

Students can also participate inDuke Engage programs inThailand and Vietnam. InThailand, students work oncoastal conservation in PhangNga, and in Vietnam theycomplete infrastructure projects toimprove health and sanitation inQuang Tri.The sister program of Duke Engage, the Rubenstein-Bing Student AthleteCivic Engagement Program, sends student athletes to India and Vietnamfor three weeks to serve and engage with the local communities,particularly by teaching and coaching local youth.The Sanford School of Public Policy runs the nationally-recognizedService Opportunities in Leadership (SOL) program, which providesDuke undergraduates with 12-month immersive experiences that combineacademic study, community-based research, critical reflection andmentoring. Students have completed SOL projects in this region rangingfrom an impact analysis of malaria testing to an evaluation of careerservices at a vocational high school.Additional Sanford programs include an undergraduate internshipprogram in India and the India Summer School Program forInternational Development Leaders, which allows Duke master’s studentsto work with Indian peers and local NGO leaders in Udaipur.The Fuqua School of Business has also long been engaged with Indiathrough its alumni network and its exchange programs. Students in theGlobal Academic Travel Experience, the Global Executive MBA program,and the Fuqua Client Consulting Practicum travel to India to work withsocial enterprises.Fall 2016

RESEARCHDuke faculty members conductresearch in or related to 16 South andSoutheast Asian countries. Thisresearch spans 8 of Duke’s schools andmany of its institutes and centers.Among Duke’s researchers exploringtopics related to South and SoutheastAsia are: Erica Field—on adolescent empowerment and education inBangladesh Brandon A. Kohrt—on mental health challenges among conflictand disaster-affected populations in NepalProfessor Manoj Mohanan foundedCollaboration for Health SystemImprovement and Impact Evaluation inIndia in 2010. His research focuses on therole of incentives, monitoring, training andtechnology to improve the performanceand quality of health care delivery. SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST ASIA AT DUKEDuke University launched the Duke IndiaInitiative in 2017 to build and fostercollaborations at Duke and with partnersacross India. The initiative has several goals: To develop deep and sustaining ties withIndian partners To foster multidisciplinary researchcollaborations on India at Duke To encourage dialogue about Indiaamong research communities on campusand abroadSeveral student organizations also contributeto these goals on campus.Duke Diya hosts Awaaz, Duke’slargest student run productionand a vibrant celebration ofSouth Asian culture andheritage. The show bringstogether over 600 students for aneclectic showcase of music,comedy, dance and tradition, allwith a South Asian twist.Duke Diya is a student-run organization thatpromotes awareness and appreciation of South Asian culture and traditionthrough political, cultural, social and community service events on Duke’scampus and in the greater Durham community.Duke also has several dance teams representing the countries of South andSoutheast Asia, including Duke Lasya and Club Raas, which showcaseclassical and folk dances originating from India.Duke-UNC Sangeet is a student organization founded collaboratively byDuke and UNC Chapel Hill to share the rich culture and history of SouthAsian classical music and other classical arts.Other relevant organizations include the Singapore Students’ Associationand the Joint Youth Organization of Indians at Duke.Together these initiatives help students build upon knowledge gained inmore than 60 South and Southeast Asian-related courses offered at Duke.Fall 2016
