Page 2DISPATCHERA Word from our President .Happy 4th of July everyone! There’s a whole lot of decorating going on inmy neighborhood. I live at the edge of downtown Huntington Beach andthe 4th is very well celebrated down here. We go to the parade, barbequewith the neighbors, and walk to the beach for fireworks. I hope you all havea fun and safe celebration. The Opportunity Quilt is finished. I sewed on the label (machine embroidered by Mary Stockard) this week and it looks stunning. The quilting byCecilia Hosford really makes the quilt, especially the scalloped shingles she put in the roofs of the houseblocks. I’m looking forward to taking it to IQF Long Beach and to presenting it to all of you at the nextmeeting.Hope you all have a great July. Remember we are dark, no guild meeting, and no workshop. ORANGE GROVE QUILTERS GUILDPage 7Amidon Quiltworks Closes Its DoorsAfter 13 years, Amidon Quiltworks will be closing up shop, effective June 30th. Theywill, however, continue their online store at www.amidonquiltworks.com. And. you willstill find Nancy around at quilt shows, applique retreats, guild workshops, cruises, etc.We wish Nancy well in all future quilting endeavors!Chemical WarningA recent study indicated that fabric gives off certain Pheromones that actually hypnotize women and causethem to purchase unreasonable amounts. When stored in large quantities in enclosed spaces, the Pheromones(in the fabric) causes memory loss and induces the nesting syndrome (similar to the one squirrels have beforethe onset of winter i.e. storing food). Therefore perpetuating their species and not having a population loss dueto their kind being cut into pieces and mixed with others.Sound tests have also revealed that these fabrics emit a very high pitched sound, heard only by a select few, abreed of women known as “quilters”. When played backwards on an LP, the sounds are heard as chants, “buyme, cut me and sew me”. In order to overcome the so called “feeding frenzy effect” that these fabrics cause, one must wear a face mask when entering a storage facility and use ear plugs to avoid being pulled into theirgrip. One must laugh, however, at the sight of customers in a quilt fabric store, with WWII army gas masksand headphones!Studies have also indicated that aliens have inhabited the earth, helping to spread the effects that these fabricshave on the human population. They are called QUILT FABRIC STORE CLERKS. It’s also been experiencedthat these same Pheromones cause a pathological need to hide these fabric purchases when taken home (or atleast blend them into the existing stash), and when asked by significant others if the fabric is new, the reply is“I’ve had it for awhile.” Author unknown (Submitted by Barbara Winkler)

Page 10DISPATCHERGRANDMA’S HEIRLOOM QUILT REMEMBEREDBy Margaret M. CochardI remember from my childhood, my Grandma’s antique quilt.Like Grandma, it was “country,” sturdy and plainly built. It was stored in a trunk of her cozy home; Each patch represented some memorable tome. The taffeta block was from her wedding gownA fifty-year treasure, she’d preserved with renown. The plaid patches of Grandpa’s woolen shirtsMingled with swatches from her favorite skirts.Materials from Mom’s christening dress of dotted swissCaptured my imagination when I was a young miss.Faded gray patches from an apron Grandma once woreEvoked warm memories in this quilt, stitched with her lore.A checkered pattern from her well-worn sunbonnetWas charming and vague as an old English sonnet. For each patch, my Grandma told tales with great pleasure; And she promised her heirloom as my future treasure. Her account of each patchwork was once quite detailed,But now, at age ninety, Grandma’s memory has failed. She “doesn’t know what happened” to her quilted beddingThat she wanted to keep fresh for her granddaughter’s wedding!TIP OF THE MONTHTo help with block placement, after arranging quilt units on a design wall step back and take a digitalphoto of it. Print the photo in color and/or black & white. This will give a better feel for distribution ofcolor and value in the blocks.
