Goals, Strategies,Tactics and TimelinesI’ve included four main focus areas, the ones most folks choose to workon. Change them if yours don’t fit. However they are broad in range tocover multiple goals within eachcategory.Personal/Health can include diet, exercise, caring for a medicalcondition, etc. Spiritual/PersonalDevelopment can includeeducation, religion, meditation, etc.You know what Relationships are.For the purposes of this example,we’ll concentrate on writing, as thatis your Business/Career.The next page contains an example.6

YourTurnThe following page is blank for youruse. It’s a working document. Print atleast two for now. You will needmore later when you break the yearinto monthly goals.Give it serious thought and time tocapture effectively. A Goal issomething you wish to achieve.Strategies are way’s to make thathappen. Tactics are steps to move thestrategy forward. Timeline is howoften and/or when the task needs tobe completed.9

Creating Your PlanDraft each goal area. Then edit ituntil all columns are perfect andwhat you will do is clearlydefined. It wouldn’t hurt to stepaway from it. Sleep on it. Thenrevisit the draft. Once it saysexactly what you want toachieve and how you will do it,take a blank form and write itout neatly. This is your workingdocument.10

WHATNEXT?You have developed a plan ofaction for the coming year. Howdo you achieve all these things inthe timing you’ve set?Simple.Print twelve forms . Look at eachgoal’s yearly plan. Break it intotwelve parts. Determine how andwhat you must do in the definedareas each month.13

How?For example:You want to hire an editor byMarch. You might need to talkto fifteen editors to find oneyou wish to work with. That’sat least five per month for thethree months you’ve allowed.Or if you talk to ten the firstmonth and five the next, youmight contract with one byearly March. This means youmust talk with two per week, since there are five weeks inJanuary.14

Another ExampleSay you want to finish the first draft of abook of 50,000 words in five months, soby June 1, 2019. How do you do it?First determine how quickly you write.Time your writing for a few days andcheck word count. Let’s say you write500 words per day. You plan to spendweekends with family. So you will writefive days per week. You should achieve2500 words per week in this case. It willtake a minimum of 20 weeks to draft50,000 words. At this rate you shouldachieve your goal by mid-April. Thisgives you part of April and the month ofJune to re-read and do initial edits.15

Another ConsiderationYou could do this backwards, bydetermining the number weeksin your timeline. With 21 weeksJanuary-May, in this scenarioyou must write a minimum of2381 words per week, or 340words per day.Either way, you achieved yourgoal on time. You’ve established your writinggoal.16

Success isn‘t final, failure isnot fatal: it is the courage tocontinue that counts.Winston Churchill17

TrackingBreak each yearly goal/strategy/tactics/timelinesection into monthly increments until the firstmonth’s plan is established.Get a calendar with blocks large enough towrite in. This can be a hard copy, desktop, online or calendar on your phone. I prefer ahard copy one with motivational photos, because I like to view a month at a glance. Usewhatever suits you.Write deadlines on the dates. Block out spacesof time to work on tactics. Write birthdays, dates, obligations, appointments, leisure plans, etc.Refer to this daily so you know at a glancewhat you must do each day.18

Your CareerYou’ve created a tool posting tasksyou must achieve to accomplishyour goals.Do the work. It’s your job.Don’t partake in leisure until yourjob is done. Using this tool shouldmake it simple for you to knowdaily how to manage yourschedule. You must be self-motivated. Youare the boss. No one is going topush you to work (unless you’refacing a deadline with youreditor/publisher). Be willing toexecute chores your chosen careerrequires.19

Monthly PlanningRefer to January and the yearlychart to create subsequent monthlyplans for the full year. When you’redone, you’ve defined steps to takeeach month. Break down what youwant to achieve monthly intoweekly tactics. Post them on yourcalendar.Recall I mentioned these areworking documents? If somethingbecomes a non-focus area, cross itoff or remove it. Working towardachievements not supporting yourplan is a waste of time.If you don’t have a calendar withblocks, print twelve copies of thenext page for this purpose. Or use acalendar of your choice.20

Oops!Sometimes life interferes withyour ability to push throughtactics. If some chore is leftundone at the end of a month, add it to the next month’splan. Adjust timing ifnecessary, allowing for thiswork.22

You’ve completedthe plan.Display it in youroffice where youcan refer to it andothers can see it.Be proud.Celebrate!23

There is only one thing thatmakes a dream impossible toachieve: the fear of failure.Paulo CoelhoHaving a yearlyplan, takingsteps, workingon tactics movesyou toward yourgoal.Action dashesfear of failure. You can do it.24

You can achieve your goalsand make your dreamscome true.25

I hope this planner helpssimplify your quest.Enjoy the process.26
