Freedom From FearFor the law of the Spirit of life inChrist Jesus hath made me freefrom the law of sin and death(Romans 8:2).This verse of scripture sets out thetwo basic spiritual laws at work in theworld: the law of the Spirit of life (inChrist Jesus) and the law of sin anddeath (in Satan). Webster’s dictionarydefines a law as “an established prin ciple.” You can depend on a law towork the same way every time.The two laws in Romans 8:2 are
reciprocals. There is a spiritual lawof reciprocals. The word reciprocalmeans “corresponding, but reversedor inverted.” Let me give you anillustration of this: North and southare reciprocals. They correspond toone another because they are bothdirections on a compass, but southis the reciprocal of north. They areexact opposites.Faith PervertedUnderstanding the principle ofreciprocals gives insight into howSatan operates. Satan is a fallenangel. Like all angelic beings, he hasno creative power. He cannot create;he can only destroy. He can onlywork with things already created. Heis limited to the forces in this world.Had he ever come up with anythingoriginal, that thing would be a truth.4
But Jesus said that there is no truth inhim (John 8:44). He is a counterfeiter,a deceiver.Satan became the illegitimatestep father of mankind throughAdam’s high treason in the Gardenof Eden. He received Adam’sauthority over the spiritual laws inthe earth. He did not put spirituallaw into motion. He just pervertedthe laws that were already there. Sinwas not a new law. It was right eousness perverted. Death was lifeperverted. Hate was love perverted.Fear was faith per verted.The faith that God gave Adam wasmeant to sustain his life. When Satangained control, that force of faith wasperverted. Satan then used thatperverted spiritual force of fear to kill,steal and destroy.After Adam sinned in the Garden,5
fear became the dominant force in hislife. The first words he spoke to Godwere, “I was afraid” (Genesis 3:10).The faith he had in his heart wasturned into fear. This is why faith andfear are so closely related. They arealmost identical. They work the same,but they produce opposite results.The law of reciprocals works in everyarea. God’s Word is true, but there isno truth in Satan. Satan is a counterfeitof God in every situation. At theopposite end of south is always north.At the opposite end of love is alwayshate. If Satan can come to you withhate, then you know God has love. IfSatan comes to you with fear, then youknow there is faith available to you inJesus. Fear is the counterfeit of faith.If you will put faith to work, it willalways overcome fear. Love alwaysovercomes hate. Prosperity always6
overcomes poverty. The counterfeitnever is as powerful as the real thing.There is a promise in God’s Wordthat will overcome every opportunityto fail that Satan can throw your way.There is not one thing in Satan’s bagof tricks that the Word cannotovercome. By knowing the spirituallaw of reciprocals and how it operates,you can keep Satan out of your life.The force we know in this earth asfear was originally Adam’s faith.When he bowed his knee to Satan,he put into motion the law of sinand death. Until then, Adam didn’tknow how to die. All he knew washow to live. All he knew was God’sWord. When he went against God’sWord, he received spiritual deathinto his spirit. He received the lawof sin and death, and it separatedhim from God.7
When you separate yourself fromGod and from His Word, you separateyourself from life. Adam separatedhimself from life, and what hap pened? He died spiritually first andthen began dying physically.Again, we see the law of reciprocalsin motion. As long as Adam obeyedGod, he lived. But when he dis obeyed God’s law, he turned andwent the other way. Death took theplace of life. He began moving underthe power of death and the forcesthat death brings. Manifestations ofsickness and disease didn’t comeinto the earth until the law of sin anddeath was put into motion.When Adam acted on somethingother than the Word of God, he s evered the supply line betweenheaven and earth. When he did that,the law of life in this earth wasperverted and became the law of sin8
and death. In the hands of God, itwas the law of life. In the hands ofSatan, it became the law of death.The same thing that happened toAdam happened to Jesus. They bothfell from life to death—one as an act oftreason, the other as an act of obedi ence (Philippians 2:8).Death vs. LifeIn Romans 8:2, we see the two spirit ual laws of life and death in operation.The following charts show each law andits results. As you can see, they arecomplete opposites. The boundary linebetween them was crossed only onetime—when Jesus offered Himself asthe supreme sacrifice to purchase ourfreedom from every part of the curse.9

He came, not only to destroythe works of the devil, but also todeliver us from the fear of death andthe bondage it brings. Look atHebrews 2:14-15:Forasmuch then as the children arepartakers of flesh and blood, healso himself like w ise took part ofthe same; that through death hemight de s troy him that had thepower of death, that is, the devil;And deliver them who through fear10
of death were all their lifetime sub ject to bondage.The phrase fear of death is a result ofthe law of sin and death. The worddestroy in the original text means “toparalyze.” Jesus came for two reasons:1. to completely paralyze Satanwho had the power of death2. to deliver us who throughfear of death were held subjectto bondageWe have not been given the spiritof bondage again to fear. Fear pro duces bondage. Jesus came to breakthe power of that bondage! How? Bystopping the force of fear. Praise God!In order for the power of death toever be broken, Jesus had to absorball the curse of the law, both in thespiritual realm and in the physicalrealm. He bore all the physical curse11
at Calvary. All the demons of hellcame against Him to annihilate Him.They wanted to torment Jesus foreverand keep Him in bondage forever,thereby keeping God from ever hav ing contact with mankind again. Satancould then rule and reign on this earthas he pleased with no restrictions orqualifications whatsoever. But Godhad something else in mind! Hebrews2:14 says through death He (Jesus)destroyed him (Satan) that had thepower of death.When the price was paid, Godbreathed the breath of life into Jesus,and the law of the Spirit of life was setinto motion for mankind. Because Hedid all that for you and me, we canlive free! We can know beyond doubtthat the law of the Spirit of life inChrist Jesus has made us free fromthe law of sin and death!12
Fear—Satan’s Main WeaponFor ye have not received the spiritof bondage again to fear; but yehave received the Spirit of adop tion, whereby we cry, Abba, Father(Romans 8:15).When you were born again, yourhuman spirit was completely re created. You received all the qualities,all the spiritual forces, all the things ofGod that Adam had in him when Godcreated him in the Garden of Eden,plus all the things in Jesus when Godraised Him from the dead.I want you to notice these words:You have not received the spirit ofbondage again to fear. Fear is not anatural force to the born-againbeliever. It was natural to you beforeyou were reborn. But your spirit manwas re-created, and eternal lifeerupted in your heart when you13
made Jesus the Lord of your life. Thereborn human spirit cannot producefear. It can receive it and act on itand be choked by it, but it cannotproduce it.God is revealing by His Word thatSatan has lost his authority andpower. The Name of Jesus will alwaysdefeat him. The counterfeit willnever w in. Faith w ill alwaysovercome fear. Love will alwaysovercome hate. Prosperity willalways overcome poverty.Fear is a spiritual force, just as faithis a spiritual force. When you applyfaith and operate in it by keeping theWord of God in your heart, that faithof God will flow through your bodyto keep it well and whole. When youapply fear and operate in it, the forceof fear will work against you to makeyou sick. Fear works in the spiritworld the same as faith.14
Fear activates Satan the way faithactivates G od. Fear is totallyde structive. It will cripple the mind,stop the heart and even change thecolor of your hair.Fear is a satanic force that worksagainst you at every opportunity.Faith is a creative force that God usesto build and uplift. Faith helps; fearhurts. Whenever faith is in operation,you will always benefit from it.Whenever fear is in operation, you willbe subject to bondage and torment.You are in contact with Satan inthis earth as long as you have fivephysical senses and a workablemind. He is a thief, a liar and a killer.He will do his best to destroy you andyour testi mony as a believer. His goalis to successfully remove you fromthe field of action. His main weaponin reaching that goal is fear. He wants15
you to take the opportu nity to fear sothat you will fail.Satan challenges the pro m ises ofGod with fear. He tries to make it lookas if those promises won’t work foryou. He wants desperately to convinceyou that faith won’t work and thatJesus’ sacrifice at Calvary wasn’t goodenough. He challenges the faith-filledpromises of God’s Word with fearfilled lies of his own.Faith—God’s Source of PowerSatan knows that he cannot do any thing to you apart or separate from fear,just as God cannot do anything for youapart or separate from faith. Satan can’ttouch you as long as you stand on theWord of God. Fear is Satan’s source ofpower the way faith is God’s source ofpower. Satan has people operating infear and they don’t even know it.16
God, on the other hand, is a goodGod. He will do His absolute best tosee that you are blessed in every areaof your life. Faith is the upholdingforce of God. He upholds all thingsby the Word of His power (Hebrews1:3). By acting in faith on the Word,you can expect the blessings of Godto be upon you. By acting on the fearof sickness and disease, you canexpect to be sick. Both faith and fearwill produce results.According to Hebrews 11:1-3, thereare three basic characteristics thatwe should know about faith:1. It is a spiritual force.2. It is God’s creative power.3. It is the substance of thingshoped for and the evidence ofthings not yet seen with thephysical eye.17
Faith power is not produced in yourhead; it is produced in your heart. It isproduced by the Word of God beingfed into your spirit. You will never getany power out of your car by pouringwater into the gas tank. Your spirit lifederives its power from God’s Word theway your car derives its power fromgasoline. If you operate in fear andfeed fear down into your spirit, youwill never produce the kind of faithpower it takes to rule over the cir cumstances of this life.God’s Way vs. Satan’s WayThe whole world flows in a negative,downhill, destructive stream. We havebeen trained by Satan to operate in thenegative. We talk fear all the time and,for the most part, are totally unawareof it. By giving thought, speech andaction to it, the force of fear will work18
proficiently. It will work in you as longas you allow it to. But you can also puta stop to it and its effect in your spirit,your soul and your body.Some people think a little fear ishealthy, but that’s a lie! There is nosuch thing as healthy fear! There is nosuch thing as a combination of God’sway and Satan’s way. There is only onemethod of operation and one set oflaws: God’s way and God’s Word!Faith is the substance of thingshoped for and the evidence of thingsnot yet seen with the physical eye. Itis the force that reaches out intothe unreality of things you need, intothe world of the spirit (heaven’ssupply) and brings those things intophysical manifestation.Because faith and fear work thesame way, we can understand fear bylooking at faith. How does faith work?19
“Faith cometh by hearing, andhearing by the word of God” (Romans10:17). Galatians 5:6 says faith worksby love.Faith is developed by meditating inGod’s Word and by acting on thatWord. Meditating in the Word causesthe capacity for faith to increase. Bymeditating in it and practicing it, theWord will produce the results offaith, love, healing, prosperity, wis dom and well-being in every area—spirit, soul and body.Meditating in God’s Word doesn’tactually build faith. It builds the capa c ity for faith. Faith is strengthened whenit is put to use. It is like a muscle. Itmust be exercised to be effective. If youtied your right arm to your side anddidn’t use it for several years, youwould lose your strength in that arm.The muscles would go limp andbecome useless to you.20
Faith comes by hearing the Wordof God. Fear comes by hearing theword of the world—the lies of Satan.Faith is developed by meditating onGod’s Word. Fear is developed bymeditating and acting on Satan’slies. The name of this is worry.The worst thing you can do is acton fear.I remember an incident that occurredwith a friend of mine. He called mymother in the middle of the night indesperate need of prayer. He was inthe hospital for surgery, but fear hadtaken control of him to such an extentthat the doctors wouldn’t administerthe anesthetic. One of them said,“This man has too much fear in him.”They would not admin ister theanesthetic nor would they do surgeryon him, or anyone else, when thatmuch fear was pres ent. They said heprobably would have died.21
My mother went to the hospitaland laid hands on him. She spoke tothat fear in the Name of Jesus Christand drove it out. They still haven’toperated on him to this day. He iswell. Praise God!The more you meditate on fear, themore it will grow in your life. You willbegin to speak of things that haven’thappened as though they alreadyhad. Then you will act on that fearand it will bring the results of thecurse of the law, which is bondage.But you don’t have to act on fear. Youdon’t have to practice fear. You don’thave to talk fear. Give it no place. Ifyou sense it rising up within you,stop right then and take authorityover it in Jesus’ Name and cast it out.In Matthew 14, we can see an excel lent example of faith vs. fear. The dis ciples were in a ship, and Jesus camewalking toward them on the water.22
Peter said, “Lord, if it be thou, bidme come unto thee on the water.”Jesus answered, “Come.”Peter stepped out of the boat andstarted walking toward Jesus.But when he saw the wind bois terous, he was afraid; and begin ning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord,save me (see verses 28-30).What caused Peter to sink? He sawthe wind boisterous and he was afraid.Peter was walking on that watersupernaturally. He was walking on theWord. The wind didn’t have anythingto do with it. The power that waskeeping Peter on top of the water washis faith in Jesus’ word, “Come.” Whenhe first stepped out of the boat, he wasacting in faith. But when the fear cameon him, it took over and dominated hisentire being, causing his faith to fail.23
If Peter had rebuked the wind, itwould have ceased. But instead, hegave in to fear and the result wasdefeat.When you speak to a mountain infaith as in Mark 11:23-24, you put theinvisible force of God’s creativepower to work. When faith-filledwords come out of your mouth, theyare backed by the Spirit of God andthe angels of God. All that power isapplied to the mountain to removeit. You are the only one who canwithdraw that power, and you do soby meditating on the lies of the deviland the words of the world. Then bysetting into motion the force of fear,you add support to the mountainand build it up. As an act of your will,you allow fear to operate, and theresult is a faith defeat.A man of faith will meditate onGod’s Word instead of worrying, and24
then he will speak to the mountainand say, “Be thou removed, and bethou cast into the sea.” His next step isto support these faith words bypraising God until the mountain iscompletely gone.Faith is released by speaking ofthings that are not as though they were(Romans 4:17). Fear is released exactlythe same way. God teaches and trainsus to operate in the positive realm offaith. So take the Word of faith and useit as your sword to combat Satan onevery hand. Hold up your shield offaith and quench all Satan’s fiery darts.By speaking words of faith, fear willdepart. It will have no place oropportunity to function in a heartfilled with God’s Word.Jesus said in Matthew 12:34 that outof the abundance of the heart, themouth speaks. This is where the evilthings and the good things come to25
pass. Whatever is in your heart inabundance will come out of yourmouth. Your spirit is either filled withfaith or it is filled with fear. It is eitherfilled with love or it is filled with hate.The best gauge you have is yourvocabulary. What are you speaking?“I’m afraid I won’t be able to go.”“I’m afraid not.”“I’m afraid so.”“That just scared me to death.”“These high prices scare me.”“Don’t go out without your coat.Daddy’s afraid you’ll get sick.”“But Brother Copeland, how can Iteach my child to wear his coat?” Teachhim about temperature effects on hisbody, not fear of sickness. Teach himto never fear sickness because Jesusbore his sicknesses and his diseases.Don’t teach him to fear automobiles.26
Teach him about automobiles. He willthen decide to stay out of the street—not because he is afraid—but becausehe has a knowledge of cars.So much of the time, these fearfilled, fear-oriented words are spokenwithout us even realizing it. We areactually practicing fear withoutknowing it.Second Timothy 1:7 says: “For Godhath not given us the spirit of fear; butof power, and of love, and of a soundmind.” Fear is from Satan. It was a partof the unregenerated man—the manyou were before you made Jesus theLord of your life. But now you haveGod in you. Fear is not of God.Isaiah 54:14-15 says:In righteousness shalt thou be estab lished: thou shalt be far fromoppression; for thou shalt not fear:and from terror; for it shall not come27
near thee. Behold, they shall surelygather together, but not by me.God has given you power and loveand a sound mind. What you mustdo now is apply the force of God’sWord to your mind and renew yourthinking to the Word of God. Byspending time in the Word, you willreprogram your thinking from fear tofaith, from death to life, from sicknessto health.Walking Free From FearPsalm 118:6 says: “The Lord is onmy side; I will not fear.” I will is thestrongest statement in the Englishlanguage. Because you realize thatthe Lord is on your side, you will notfear. To fear is against the Lord’s will!Fear does not have the power or theright to usurp authority over ahuman being who has made the28
decision to live above fear. Why?Because God is on his side!Isaiah 43:1-2 says:Fear not : for I have redeemedthee, I have called thee by thyname; thou art mine. When thoupassest through the waters, I willbe with thee.God is saying over and over to Hispeople, “Fear not!” These two wordsappear more than 60 times in theBible. If God says, “Fear not!” thatmeans you don’t have to fear. WhenGod tells you to do something, He willalways supply the power and abilityfor you to do it. Being redeemedmeans you don’t have to fear.There is a promise of God’s Wordthat will overcome every opportunityyou have to fail. There is not one thingSatan can bring at you that God’sWord cannot overcome. By knowing29
the spiritual law of reciprocals, youcan keep Satan out of your life.You are the deciding witness! Theonly chance Satan has with you is toget you to operate in fear and talkfear. You don’t have to choose fear,but you can. You don’t have tochoose faith, but you can!Remember what God says in Isaiah54:14: He has established us inrighteousness. We shall be far fromoppression for we shall not fear!Terror shall not come near us! What apromise! God was stating that Hispeople could look forward to a lifewithout fear. You have God’s Word onit. You can be far from oppression,because you shall not fear! Satanicoppression and fear are closely con nected. Acts 10:38 says:How G od anointed Jesus ofNazareth with the Holy Ghost and30
with power: who went about doinggood, and healing all that wereoppressed of the devil.In 2 Peter 1:3-4, we are told that wehave been given all things that pertainto life and godliness by the divinepower of God and through the ex ceeding great and precious promises.Then it says: “that by these (exceedinggreat and precious promises) ye mightbe partakers of the divine nature,having escaped the corruption that isin the world through lust.” Everythingthat pertains to life and godliness iscovered by one or more of the preciouspromises of God in His Word.Remember the law of reciprocalsnow. Any fear Satan can bring to ourminds is a fear of failure of God’spromise, since there is a promise thatcovers everything in life. Fear of sick ness is actually a fear that 1 Peter 2:24is not true. Fear of financial failure is31
actually a fear that Philippians 4:19 isnot true. Remember, Satan cannotcreate; he can only pervert. He hasnever originated anything! Therefore,you can be sure that whatever Satansays or promotes was originallycovered by God’s promises and paidfor by Jesus. Even if you don’t knowwhere in the Word the promise is, youcan know there is one. That is enoughto drive fear out long enough to go tothe Word and the Holy Spirit, locatethe promises that cover your situation,and then stand on them in faith.God has given us His Word.Through that Word, we can partakeof all His divine nature provides. Wecan escape the corruption in theworld. We can live above sickness,sin, demons, poverty and fear. Wecan shake off the effects of the curseand walk in newness of life. We canhave all the blessings of Abraham32
operating in and through us.You have the right to use the Nameof Jesus and the full armor of God.You also have the right not to use it. Ihighly recommend that you makethe decision now to live the life Godintends for you to live, the life thatJesus died to provide for you.You can step through the doorfrom fear into absolute faith andput a stop to Satan’s destructivemaneuvers in your life. Stand upboldly and say: “I’ve been made therighteousness of Almighty God. I’vebeen washed in the blood of theLamb. The Lord is on my side; I willnot fear. Sin shall have no dominionover me, for He that is within me isgreater than he that is in the world.Jesus bore my sicknesses and carriedmy diseases. By His stripes, I amhealed. Therefore, I boldly say thatthe Lord is my helper and I will not33
fear. What can man do to me?”Live the Love LifeThere is no fear in love; but perfectlove casteth out fear: because fearhath torment. He that feareth is notmade perfect in love (1 John 4:18).As long as Israel obeyed thecommandments before God, they hadno reason to fear anything or anyone atany time (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Thesame is true in the new cov enant. Wehave been given the commandment tobelieve on the Name of Jesus and loveone another (1 John 3:22-24). God islove! To walk in love regardless ofwhether or not anyone else does is thehighest walk available. There is no fearin God. There is no failure in God. Readthis scripture very, very carefully:We know that whosoever is born ofGod sinneth not ; but he that is34
begotten of God keepeth himself,and that wicked one toucheth himnot (1 John 5:18).Think about that: The wicked onetouches us not. That seems too goodto be true, but nevertheless, it is inGod’s Word. I believe every one of usshould reach with all of our heart,soul and body for what is promisedin this scripture. My family and Ihave made the quality decision towalk and live in God’s love regardlessof what the rest of the world does. Bymaking that decision and prayingthat prayer, fear has been relievedof its duty and presence in ourhousehold. It’s cast out! Praise God!There Is No Fear in LoveThe entire new covenant—all that itinvolves—is wrapped up in love.According to God’s Word, we can walk35
in perfected love while we are here inthis earth. God is love so love itself isalready perfect, but we have to allowGod to express His perfection in ourlives. We do that by keeping His Word.We saw in 1 John 4 that there is nofear in love, that perfect love castsout fear. Walking in love will get rid offear. When you realize that you arewalking in the commandment ofGod, there is nothing to be afraid of.Fear has no authority over you.A man born into this earth is filledwith and ruled by fear, but a manwith a re-created spirit is born of andfilled with the love of God. When youwere born again, you were born oflove and there is no fear in love. Whenlove entered, it cast that fear out ofyou. However, your heart will continueto receive, store and produce fear iffear is fed into it.36
You have the substance of faith inyour spirit. But if you don’t feed it withthe Word of God, it will never develop.If you keep practicing fear, talking fear,living fear, the Word of God will becompletely choked out of your spirit.Fear is a spiritual force. When youtalk fear, you get that spiritual powerworking to your disadvantage in steadof to your advantage. Get rid of thefear. If you have a sensation of feararound you, openly and boldlyrebuke it on the spot. Don’t put upwith it. Don’t fool with it. “Fear hathtorment.” Who, in the Bible, is calledthe “tormentor”? Satan. The Biblesays we have not been given a spiritof fear (2 Timothy 1:7). When you aredealing with fear, you’re dealing witha spirit.I absolutely refuse to make myselfavailable to any kind of spirit but theHoly Spirit of God and those that are37
in His allegiance. I will not make mybody, my mind, my spirit or my wordsavailable to any evil force.Whenever fear shows up, we shouldbe so trained in the Word of God thatwe rebuke it, repel it and stand againstit in every Bible form available. Fear isone of Satan’s choice weapons. Stopfear. Rebuke it. Renounce it. Every timeit crosses your mind, say out loud, “Iam redeemed from fear. Jesusdelivered me from fear” (Galatians3:13-14; Hebrews 2:15).The Bible says:Finally, brethren, whatsoeverthings are true, whatsoever thingsare honest, whatsoever things arejust, whatsoever things are pure,whatsoever things are lovely,whatsoever things are of goodreport.think on these things(Philippians 4:8).38
Take those good thoughts andsay them.Fear is fed through your intellect,down into your spirit. Remember,fear is not natural to the believer.It comes from the outside in. InMatthew 6:28, 31 Jesus said:Why take ye thought for raiment?.Take no thought, saying, What shallwe eat? or, What shall we drink? or,Wherewithal shall we be clothed?How do you take a thought? Justbecause a thought comes into yourmind, you are not required to take it,or accept it. The Bible says: “Castingdown imaginations, and every highthing that exalteth itself against theknowledge of God, and bringing intocaptivity every thought to theobedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians10:5). Jesus said, “Take no thought,saying.” How do you take a39
thought? By saying it. In Matthew12:34, Jesus said, “Out of theabundance of the heart the mouthspeaketh.”How do you get it down into yourspirit? By saying it. You feed it fromyour mind into your spirit by takingthe thought and saying it. Develophabits of saying the Word of God.Stop practicing fear by using it inyour daily conversation.
