HISTORY OF THE DISTRICTA GUIDE TOVISUAL IDENTITY STANDARDSThe establishment of a college for the Coalinga Union HighSchool District was proposed in the spring of 1932. Theofficial beginning of the Coalinga Extension Center of FresnoState College dates from October 3, 1932. In September1941, Coalinga Junior College became an independentunit under the direction of the Governing Board of theCoalinga Union High School District. Construction of a newcampus on Cherry Lane near the northern limit of the City ofFrank Gornick, ChancellorWest Hills CommunityCollege DistrictCoalinga was begun on October 3, 1955, and the buildingswere occupied on September 13, 1956.In November of 1961, the voters of Coalinga Union HighSchool District approved the formation of a separate juniorcollege district, and in June of 1962, the voters of LemooreHigh School District voted to annex to the college district, asdid voters of Riverdale and Tranquillity High School Districtsin December of 1962. Effective July 1, 1969, the officialname of the college was changed to West Hills College inkeeping with the nature of the expanded district.HISTORY1

WEST HILLS COMMUNIT Y COLLEGE DISTRICT LOGOThe Meaning Behind the LogoThe West Hills Community College District logo is the mostvisible and recognizable element of our identity.Our logo includes a contemporary version of the Central Valleylandscape that surrounds us. The logo as a whole symbolizesthe great San Joaquin Valley, a geographic area unique to theICONworld, served by a group of talented professionals dedicatedto teaching and improving the lives of students and thecommunities we serve.Within the icon, lush green fields symbolize life, growth andLOGOTYPEperseverance of our communities. The water represents theCalifornia Aqueduct that brought transformation to the region,as the college experience brings opportunity to students. Thesun signifies strength, while the foothills stand for stability.Below the icon is an updated typographical treatment of ourname that reflects our commitment to move our vision forward.The West Hills Community College District logo is an official symbol, any alteration, distortion, re-creation, translation, or misuse is strictlyprohibited. The logo includes both the icon and the logotype. It must be used on all district digital and/or printed materials. Guidance forthe logo usage is shown in detail within this guide. SLOGAN USAGEThe slogan may be used alone as a graphic element or headline,to complement photography or other backgrounds. Whenusing the slogan as a graphic element or headline, pay attentionto the clear space area around it. WEST HILLS COLLEGE SCHOOL LOGOSIn 1932, against the backdrop of the Great Depression and theneed for higher education in the Coalinga area, Coalinga HighSchool District and Fresno State College began offering classesat Coalinga High School. In 1956, the current West Hills CollegeCoalinga campus opened at 300 Cherry Lane. In 1961, the collegedistrict separated from the high school district and becameCoalinga College. The following year, voters in Lemoore andAvenal voted to become part of the college district. Riverdale andTranquillity joined the district in 1963. Coalinga College beganoffering classes in Lemoore in 1964. To meet the needs of the cityof Firebaugh, North District Center opened its doors in 1971. Thatsame year, the pre-release program was developed to serve sailorsat Naval Air Station Lemoore. In 1979, the district purchasedland for Kings County Center and construction began in 1981.Construction began on the current West Hills College Lemoorecampus in 2001 after the land was donated by the Pedersen andSemas families. The doors to the Lemoore campus on CollegeAvenue and Bush Street opened in 2002. The district serves morethan 6,000 students each semester.Each College within the District has its own co-branded logo andcolor identity. In these logos, the school name falls underneath theWest Hills College Logotype. More specifications for each college areoutlined in detail in their own section of this guide.LO G O8

AREA OF ISOLATIONThe legibility and distinction of our district logo is veryimportant. To ensure that the logo is highly visible, alwaysseparate it from its surroundings.The area of isolation, or clear space, surrounding the logoshould equal the height of the “W” in “WEST HILLS”Do not allow any other graphic element to penetrate thisarea of isolation.LO G O9

College logosmay also include a department descriptor.Logos with department descriptors must be provided bythe Marketing Department. MINIMUM SIZEThere is a minimum size for reproducing the West HillsFull ColorSpot-Color1.5”1.25”2”1.5”Community College District logos. This ensures that our logoremains legible in every usage. PRIMARY FONT USAGEWest Hills Community College District has standards for typography to ensure brandconsistency across all mediums. Typography is one of the most important designelements. It is used to differentiate sections of information as headlines, text or captions.The primary sans serif font for West Hills Community College is Myriad. It is available inten style/weights. MARKETING PROCEDURESMarketing Approvals – External and internal documents, including flyers, posters, brochures, banners, etc., for collegewide announcements, community events, student events, and special events require marketing involvement andapproval. Please make sure to include marketing staff in your planning meetings well in advance (at least a month) toensure ample time to develop materials.Internal materials that include simple flyers or announcements to students or staff, that do not require photos or creativedesign, do not need to be approved by marketing. The branded “Microsoft Word template” provided by marketing mustbe used for this types of flyer or announcement.Marketing Requests – The marketing request form can be found in the portal under the Marketing team site. This formwill allow you to select what type of marketing efforts you would like the marketing department to produce for yourannouncement or event.Approved Vendors – All vendors must work directly with the marketing department to ensure they are using theappropriate graphics and that all artwork is approved before finalizing projects.
