Preface To The 5th Edition - Turtle Rock Guitar Book

Preface to the 5th EditionThis book and the Guitar Club that went with it started because oneof my old counsellors put a few guitar chords into the official campsong book. Those chords were the reason I learned to play. Thatsummer, when we were last-year campers, regular activities werecancelled one day because of stormy weather. We all piled into thelodge, where we sat with Ryley and her guitar, singing allafternoon. It was the first time a lot of us had ever sung ourfavourite camp songs with a guitar. At the time, I'd never evenheard recordings of most of them. (This is before Napster, kids.) Iremain ever thankful that we didn't play Rainy Day Bingo thatafternoon. At the end of the summer I started writing in chords forthe rest of the song book, which gradually led to the first editionof The Mi-A-Kon-Da Guitar Book.Since then, this book's seen a few new places and met a lot of newsongs. It seemed about time to give it a name that would bringeverything and everyone together. Turtle Rock does just this. OnBirch Island, it's where the whole camp meets after lights out onMi-A-Kon-Da night to sing quiet songs by the fire, listen to thecamp legend, and watch the full moon rise over the lake. It's alsowhere we meet for special cook-outs, reflections, and early in themorning to watch that bittersweet Last Sunrise of the Summer. Everycamp has its turtle rock. Each has seen some beautiful skies andheard some great music. We all have these special places in ourpersonal geographies, whether or not it's at a camp, or on a rockthat looks like a turtle. (I'm sure if you look closely, though, itprobably does.) A wise woman has been known to say that it's notthe place, it's what you bring to it. I hope wherever you ventureon the back of this great turtle, you bring a few songs. Each of the songs in this book has a story or two attached to it.Some songs were added by request, some inspired by a memory. If a song is dedicated to you in this edition, it's because you'rethe reason it's there; I always think of you when I play it.This edition wouldn't have happened without the persistentencouragement of Rob Grundy. Rob, thanks for always making sure Iwas procrastinating the right things, and for all the songs you'veadded over the years. You're amazing. Also, big high fives to IanGrundy, Rich Howard, Hilary Best, and Mike Yan for theircontributions to past editions. Thanks!!Camp is the sort of place where you can do anything. The sort ofplace where someone has a guitar you can borrow and a few kind wordsto keep you going. It's where you stop being nervous becauseeveryone's singing along with you. Thank you to everyone who sang methrough the past few years, for your patience, support, andunderstanding. It's meant more than words.Rock on,January 2011
