3President’s MessageThis time of year, everything in the Jewish world seems to come fastand furious, but in a good way, of course. The calendar has been fullwith many activities, programs, services, and simchas. Most recently,October was full with the sacred services of the High Holy Days, andNovember brings the celebration of two more B’nai Mitzvah, and ourStarry Night event. All bring wonderful opportunities to engage withone another and celebrate. Our Friday Pre-Shabbat Schmoozes from5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with light food, have been well attended. ThePre-Shabbat Schmoozes are a regular occurrence every Friday excepton Friday’s when a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is scheduled. If you have notexperienced our small gathering of Schmoozers, then please plan tojoin us soon. Our many volunteers, committees, board of directors, Donald, theMasons, Gavrielle, Radie, Paige, and Rabbi have each been working invarious capacities on important work at RST including preparing forour many services, B’nai Mitzvah training, ritual topics including HighHoliday debrief, Programming, Starry Night, Schmoozes, Sunday School, security and greeter/usheringtraining. There is always something going on to keep us busy.We recently had a membership engagement workshop led by Sarah Barnett, fellow RST member and UJCresource. Topics included actionable ways to engage with members and how leadership and individualscan provide a welcoming experience for new and existing members. We will likely follow this up withanother workshop in the near future. Sarah does a lot for us, and I want to thank her for her work at RodefSholom and the community at large.By the time you read this, our new Simcha wall assets should be on the property, and possibly alreadyinstalled along the hallway fingers crossed. If not, it will be very soon. Once it is installed, it will bean exciting time to come see our beautiful new Simcha wall with the many leaves acknowledgingimportant simchas in life. There will be room for many more leaves, so watch your e-mails and othercommunications for information on getting a Simcha leaf to go on the new Simcha tree. Many thanks tothe donors involved and our building design committee led by Robin Levy for their work on bringing ournew Simcha tree to life. It’s been 15 years. I would like to thank Donald Goddard, and Richard and Evelyn Mason each for their15 years of service working with us at RST. We appreciate all you do to make our experiences at RST gosmoothly, organized, and taste great. Please visit our website homepage for a link to information and sign-up to volunteer for a shift during theupcoming December 25th – 26th annual PORT volunteer days, when we assist in feeding those in need.Time slots are available so please sign-up online.I want to especially thank Rabbi Dror and Cantor Ruth Ross for their amazing preparation and delivery ofour High Holy Days services, and to the many participants in our services. Well done.Yasher Koach!Allen FraleyNovember - December 2019

A signout notebook will be available in the library so that ifyou wish to take out books for yourself or your family, you simply write the information in the appropriatespaces so that we know that you have the book andthe information can be entered in the computerizedcirculation system. We will be working this fall andwinter to get the library catalog on line, and once that’scompleted, we will let the congregation know so thatyou can find out, from anywhere, what’s in the library. If you did not order a directorybut wish to have one, there are a very limited numberof directories still available for a donation of 18, pluspostage (unless it is picked up at the synagogue). Pleasecontact the RST Office. Our first meeting took place on September 22nd, asRhoda Nachman and Evelyn Bibi introduced us toseveral forms of Tai Chi. We all found it very interestingand enjoyed the exercise! Thanks to Danile Spokony fororganizing the program and to Rhoda and Evelyn fortheir excellent instruction. Our next meeting will be Sunday morning, November17th, at RST, for our annual Paid-Up Membership event. Our program is not yet set, but all paid-up members-and those who are not yet paid-up but will do sothat morning!--are invited, from 10:30am to 12noon,coinciding with Religious School that morning. OurDecember program on Dec. 15th will see the returnof our “Make It and Take It” activity, where we’ll puttogether parve ingredients for crockpot/instant potmeals that can then be frozen until you wish to cookthem. We’ll be making extras to put into the RST freezerto have on hand for shiva meals and for meals forcongregants who are ill or recovering from an illness. We’ll also have our annual Hanukkah gift fair (there willbe no book fair this year), headed up by Danile Spokony. Please contact her if you are able to help with the giftfair that morning. The Sisterhood Coordinating CommitteeTorah FundThe Torah Fund Campaign of theWomen’s League for ConservativeJudaism is how we, as WLCJmembers, support the educationinstitutions of ConservativeJudaism: The Jewish TheologicalSeminary (New York, NY), ZieglerSchool of Rabbinic Studies(Los Angeles, CA), SchechterInstitute of Jewish Studies(Jerusalem), Seminario RabinicoLatinoamericano (Buenos Aires), and Zacharias FrankelCollege (Potsdam). Through our donations, we supportthe students who will become our future rabbis, cantors and educators. This year’s theme is “Chesed,” which means “kindness”or “loving kindness.” It conveys the deep love thatanimates Jewish acts of kindness, done withoutthought of reward. The Bible has numerous examplesof chesed, and our rabbinic tradition enacted manylaws to formalize our commitment to kindness, makingchesed one of the three central pillars of Jewish life, asShimon HaTzaddik taught: The world rests on threethings, on Torah, on service of God, andon deeds of kindness (Pirkei Avot 1:2).The 5780 (2019-2020) Torah Fund pin(can be used as a pin or on a necklace)depicts a heart surrounded by threecircles, one larger than the next. Thissymbolizes the heart of kindness, whichJews enact in ever-widening realms ofgenerosity: from family, to community,to the larger world; from North America,to Israel, to the world; or from sisterhood, to region, tothe larger world of Women”s League for ConservativeJudaism. And as it is said in Psalm 89, may we builda world of kindness. The pin is WLCJ’s gift to thosewomen who wish to support Torah Fund at theBenefactor ( 180) level. This can be paid all at once orin installments; by cash, check or by credit card (via theTorah Fund website http://www.jtsa.edu/torah-fund).If you wish to become a Benefactor or have morequestions about Torah Fund, please contact MarthaKatz-Hyman, who has pins available now. Thank you foryour support of Torah Fund!November - December 2019

13RST Men’s ClubHello Friends,I’m very excited about the coming year and the events that are planned for our club. We started withour annual sukkah building, and we were able to enjoy our week of Sukkot with our family, friends, andcommunity. Thanks to all who participated in putting up the sukkah, and thanks to our Sunday Schoolstudents and staff for the decorations. I will be sending out an annual dues statement and a list of activitiesscheduled for the remainder of 2019 and 2020 in the first week of November. The Men’s Club is very important to our synagogue! Ourmission, in conjunction with the Federation of JewishMen’s Clubs, is to “Involve Jewish Men in Jewish Life.” I havepersonally experienced and witnessed the benefits that ourclub members have gained from our involvement in thisbrotherhood. The annual World Wide Wrap, in conjunctionwith Build-a-Pair on Super Sunday, Yom HaShaoah YellowCandle program, Minyan of Comfort training, Men’s ClubShabbat, and the bi-annual National Convention, are just afew of the programs sponsored by the FJMC. Additionally, the Seaboard Region, which is our region, sponsors theannual Blue Yarmulke Person-of-the-Year Award ceremony and a regional retreat at Capital Retreat Center inWaynesboro, PA. These programs have directly benefited members of the RST Men’s Club, and members ofFJMC nationally and internationally.“InvolveJewish Men inJewish Life.”My goal this year is to position our club to receive the Quality Club Award. The criteria for this award isn’tdifficult to achieve, though it will take some effort and participation from each of us. Much of the annualprogramming is based on criteria for the award. I am soliciting assistance from those who are interested tohelp me with this endeavor. I would like to solicit programming ideas from the membership. Send me yourthoughts! It’s a pleasure being a part of our RST brotherhood, and thanks for the opportunity to serve RodefSholom Temple in this capacity.Kol Tov,Johnny ParkerCondolences continued from previouspage Frida Dorfman, mother of Michael (Olga) Dorfmanand Alex (Liya) and grandmother of Yafim, Anton,Yossi, Daniel and David Dorfman.Marilyn Nataupsky, wife of Dr. Mark Nataupsky andmother of Debbie (Nataupsky) Cohen and family andGlenda (Nataupsky) Rozman and family.
