NAVSEA Habitability NSTM - Extract1.4 LIGHTING.Fluorescent lighting or Solid State Lighting (SSL) (see MIL-DTL-16377) shallbe the primary source of general illumination in living and work spaces.SSL, such as Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), Organic Light EmittingDiodes (OLEDs), or Polymer Light Emitting Diodes (PLEDs) should beconsidered, as much as practicable, to support reduced energy usage, reduced environmental impact, improved reliability and durability, longevity, recyclability, and reduced man-hours from fewer lightreplacements. Wherever general illumination is inadequate for efficientperformance of specific tasks, detail illumination shall be provided for thespecific functions. Lighting fixtures shall be arranged to provide uniformillumination so that the ratio of maximum footcandles under a lightingfixture to the minimum footcandles between it and the nearest adjacentfixture shall not be greater than two to one. Excessive brightness contrastsbetween “seeing task” and background immediately surrounding such taskshall not exceed a ratio of ten to one. Arrangement of lighting fixtures shallbe coordinated with ventilation terminals and other overheadinterferences and integrated with equipment/furniture arrangement toachieve the best possible illumination within these requirements. .Technical Authority: ‘Consider OLED as Part of Shipboard SSL Implementation’OLEDWorksLLC InformationOLEDWorks LLCProprietary

OLED Value PropositionLighting panels thatare ultrathin(microns to mm)lightweight (grams),cool to the touch, both rigid andbendableNo hazardousmaterialsSustainability:fewer parts, glassrecyclableNo photo-biologicalrisks (IEC 62471)OLEDWorksLLC InformationOLEDWorks LLCProprietary

Organic Light Emitting Diodes: OLEDOrganic (carbon containing) materials layered between ananode and a cathode to create a large area diodeOrganicsReflectivecathode 0. 2 1mmTransparentanodeSubstrate (glass)Emitting light is naturally diffuseOLEDWorksLLC InformationOLEDWorks LLCProprietaryMost of this is the glass substrate! The OLED is less than a micron!
