Highlights of this policy can befound on our family of parishes website(westmiddlesexcatholic.dol.ca) and doors ofthe all church sites.Let’s listen to the voices ofour brothers and sistersfighting for their right to ahealthy environment .World leaders have gathered for the 26th UN ClimateChange Conference of the Parties (COP26). Althoughthese powerful decision-makers are debating the futureof the planet, they are probably too far removed from therealities of its most vulnerable people. It is up to us tohear and amplify the voices of those who are defendingtheir rights and the environment against economicravage. Medarda Hernandez, whose community inHonduras has been repeatedly harmed by largeindustrial projects, including supposedly “green”projects, says, “if other extractivist projects start in ourcommunity, we are not going to let them pass. I ask theinternational community to come to our aid, because weare really suffering from this situation.”So that people like Medarda do not oadresponsible for protecting human andenvironmental rights. Weekly Reflection31st Sunday in Ordinary Time October 31, 2021It has been said, by whom I do not know, but marriage is not a 50-50 relationship but 100-100relationship. That is to say, not just for one spouse, but for both, all in, all the time 100%. To be trulysuccessful in our marriages, we must be committed to each other 100% of the time!My parents just celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary. I suspect they wouldn’t have got very far ifthey weren’t both committed to each other, 100%.True discipleship is based on this same commitment of being all in 100% of the time. Jesus tells us thegreatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, and our soul, and our mind and with all of ourstrength. Whew! Sounds a little daunting, doesn’t it? Imagine for a moment though, if we all did justthat. With this kind of love for God, loving our neighbor would come naturally and easily to us. It isimpossible to love God so completely and not others in the same way. Such a wonderful domino effect! The command is simple really. Love God, love one another, make disciples. Can’t get much simpler thanthis. The invitation from the Holy Spirit to discipleship is to enter into the never-ending love that sustainsus all. To give and receive without hesitation just as Christ himself gave for all of us.My friend, Michael Dopp, the evangelist, says that if we came upon a deal at the grocery store where theywere selling hamburger for a dollar a pound, we would tell all the people in the store, “hey, you need totake advantage of this deal. It’s too good to pass up!” Michael also says, if we came to a gas stationselling gas for one dollar per litre, we would be sure to get on social media and let all of our friends andfamily know where they too can find this deal. Why then, can we not do the same for our faith? Whatholds us back from telling everyone how wonderful life is with Jesus? Perhaps discipleship is more likegambling, we have to go “all in”, that is, soul, mind, body and strength. Tricky part is, can we gamble itall? This is what discipleship is, to go all in, all the time, not just when the mood strikes you or you are havinga good day. No, to be a disciple of Christ is to go out of your way to love all those who cross your pathalways and forever. Why then, are we so reluctant to spread the Good News of Jesus to all those around us? What holds usback from telling everyone how we have encountered the real deal in Jesus? Is it because we are afraidto gamble with our reputations and are concerned with what others will think of us?The message of the gospel of Mark has just gotten a little clearer. Agreeing with and understanding thecommandment gets us close to the Kingdom of God, but obeying it through action is what actually showsthat we are part of God’s Kingdom now. How we live shows whether we have gone “all in” for the love ofGod, ourselves, and others.Reflection by Julie de Gouw, Pastoral Minister
