Father Scott’s Sharing SpotA Message from Father Scott VanDerveer,Pastor at St. Mary’s ChurchDear Parish Family,I am so excited about how many people in ourparish (and beyond) have decided to take a chanceand plunge into the 6-week small group series onthe popular book The Purpose Driven Life, byRick Warren.I think you will be surprised by how many littlegems of insight and wisdom this book contains.And I doubt anyone could leave an experiencelike this without growing in their relationshipwith God and in their connection to our parishand the wonderful people who make it up.Can I promise you that you’ll like everythingabout this book? No, I can’t. Some people willlove everything about it, but for others, there willbe some sticking points, and items here or therethat won’t sit exactly right with you. That’s truefor me, too. But this is exactly why thisexperience will be so rich: it provides the abilityto become a better disciple while at the same timesharpening your sense of what makes ourCatholic worldview so distinctive. There’s no wayto put a price on that.And as Jesus told us in the Gospel this pastweekend, “Whoever is not against us is for us”(Mark 9:39). Rick Warren is not a Catholic, but heis a Christian and shares more in common withus than he doesn’t. After all, there is one Lord,one faith, one call of service, one baptism” and weall share it (Ephesians 4:5). This book can help usto appreciate what unites us and become betterversed in what things are distinctive about ourprecious Catholic perspective.You will also get to experience a privilege thatusually only priests, spiritual directors andGod First.
