1. THE OPENING (al-Fatihah)1. THE OPENING(al-Fatihah)them, or have not warned them—they donot believe.7.God has set a seal on their hearts and ontheir hearing, and over their vision is aveil. They will have a severe torment.1.In the name of God, the Gracious, theMerciful.2.Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.3.The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.4.Master of the Day of Judgment.8.Among the people are those who say,“We believe in God and in the Last Day,”but they are not believers.9.5.They seek to deceive God and those whobelieve, but they deceive none but themselves, though they are not aware. It is You we worship, and upon You wecall for help.6.Guide us to the straight path.10.In their hearts is sickness, and God hasincreased their sickness. They will have apainful punishment because of their denial.7.The path of those You have blessed, notof those against whom there is anger, norof those who are misguided.2. THE HEIFER(al-Baqarah)11.And when it is said to them, “Do notmake trouble on earth,” they say, “We areonly reformers.”In the name of God,the Gracious, the Merciful.1.12.In fact, they are the troublemakers, butthey are not aware.Alif, Lam, Meem.2.This is the Book in which there is nodoubt, a guide for the righteous.13.And when it is said to them, “Believe asthe people have believed,” they say, “Shallwe believe as the fools have believed?” Infact, it is they who are the fools, but theydo not know.3.Those who believe in the unseen, andperform the prayers, and give from whatWe have provided for them.14.And when they come across those whobelieve, they say, “We believe”; but whenthey are alone with their devils, they say,“We are with you; we were only ridiculing.”4.And those who believe in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealedbefore you, and are certain of the Hereafter.5.These are upon guidance from theirLord. These are the successful.15.It is God who ridicules them, and leavesthem bewildered in their transgression.6.As for those who disbelieve—it is thesame for them, whether you have warned1

2. THE HEIFER (al-Baqarah)16.Those are they who have bartered errorfor guidance; but their trade does notprofit them, and they are not guided.24.17.25.But if you do not—and you will not—then beware the Fire whose fuel is peopleand stones, prepared for the disbelievers.Their likeness is that of a person whokindled a fire; when it illuminated allaround him, God took away their light, and left them in darkness, unable to see.And give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds; that they willhave gardens beneath which rivers flow.Whenever they are provided with fruittherefrom as sustenance, they will say,“This is what we were provided with before,” and they will be given the like of it.And they will have pure spouses therein, and they will abide therein forever.18.Deaf, dumb, blind. They will not return.19.Or like a cloudburst from the sky, inwhich is darkness, and thunder, and lightning. They press their fingers into theirears from the thunderbolts, in fear ofdeath. But God surrounds the disbelievers.26.God does not shy away from making anexample of a gnat, or something above it.As for those who believe, they know that itis the Truth from their Lord. But as forthose who disbelieve, they say, “What didGod intend by this example?” He leadsastray many thereby, and He guides manythereby; but He misleads thereby only theevildoers.20.The lightning almost snatches theirsight away. Whenever it illuminates forthem, they walk in it; but when it growsdark over them, they stand still. Had Godwilled, He could have taken away theirhearing and their sight. God is capable ofeverything.27.O people! Worship your Lord who created you and those before you, that youmay attain piety. Those who violate God’s covenant afterits confirmation, and sever what God hascommanded to be joined, and commit evilon earth. These are the losers.22.28.21.He who made the earth a habitat foryou, and the sky a structure, and sendswater down from the sky, and brings outfruits thereby, as a sustenance for you. Therefore, do not assign rivals to Godwhile you know. How can you deny God, when you weredead and He gave you life, then He willput you to death, then He will bring you tolife, then to Him you will be returned?29.It is He who created for you everythingon earth, then turned to the heaven, andmade them seven heavens. And He isaware of all things.23.And if you are in doubt about what Wehave revealed to Our servant, then produce a chapter like these, and call yourwitnesses apart from God, if you are truthful.30.When your Lord said to the angels, “Iam placing a successor on earth.” They2

2. THE HEIFER (al-Baqarah)37.said, “Will You place in it someone whowill cause corruption in it and shed blood, while we declare Your praises and sanctifyYou?” He said, “I know what you do notknow.”Then Adam received words from hisLord, so He relented towards him. He isthe Relenting, the Merciful.38.We said, “Go down from it, all of you.Yet whenever guidance comes to you fromMe, then whoever follows My guidance—they have nothing to fear, nor shall theygrieve.31.And He taught Adam the names, all ofthem; then he presented them to the angels, and said, “Tell Me the names of these,if you are sincere.”39.But as for those who disbelieve andreject Our signs—these are the inmates ofthe Fire—wherein they will remain forever.”32.They said, “Glory be to You! We haveno knowledge except what You havetaught us. It is you who are the Knowledgeable, the Wise.”40.O Children of Israel! Remember Myblessings which I bestowed upon you, andfulfill your pledge to Me, and I will fulfillMy pledge to you, and fear Me.33.He said, “O Adam, tell them theirnames.” And when he told them theirnames, He said, “Did I not tell you that Iknow the secrets of the heavens and theearth, and that I know what you revealand what you conceal?”41.And believe in what I revealed, confirming what is with you; and do not bethe first to deny it; and do not exchangeMy revelations for a small price; and beconscious of Me.34.And We said to the angels, “Bow downto Adam.” They bowed down, except forSatan. He refused, was arrogant, and wasone of the disbelievers.42.And do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth while youknow.35.We said, “O Adam, inhabit the Garden, you and your spouse, and eat from it freelyas you please, but do not approach thistree, lest you become wrongdoers.”43.And attend to your prayers, and practice regular charity, and kneel with thosewho kneel.36.But Satan caused them to slip from it,and caused them to depart the state theywere in. We said, “Go down, some of youenemies of one another. And you will haveresidence on earth, and enjoyment for awhile.”44.Do you command people to virtuousconduct, and forget yourselves, eventhough you read the Scripture? Do younot understand?45.And seek help through patience andprayer. But it is difficult, except for thedevout.3

2. THE HEIFER (al-Baqarah)46.Those who know that they will meettheir Lord, and that to Him they will return.ance. He is the Accepter of Repentance, the Merciful.55.O Children of Israel! Remember Myfavor which I bestowed upon you, and Ithat favored you over all nations. And recall that you said, “O Moses, wewill not believe in you unless we see Godplainly.” Thereupon the thunderboltstruck you, as you looked on.48.56.47.And beware of a Day when no soul willavail another in the least, nor will any intercession be accepted on its behalf, norwill any ransom be taken from it, nor willthey be helped. Then We revived you after your death,so that you may be appreciative.57.And We shaded you with clouds, andWe sent down to you manna and quails:“Eat of the good things We have providedfor you.” They did not wrong Us, but theyused to wrong their own souls.49.And recall that We delivered you fromthe people of Pharaoh. They inflicted onyou terrible persecution, killing your sonsand sparing your women. Therein was atremendous trial from your Lord.58.And recall that We said, “Enter thistown, and eat plentifully from it whateveryou wish; but enter the gate humbly, andsay, 'Pardon.' We will forgive your sins, and give increase to the virtuous.”50.And recall that We parted the sea foryou, so We saved you, and We drownedthe people of Pharaoh as you looked on.59.And recall that We appointed for Moses forty nights. Then you took to worshiping the calf after him, and you turnedwicked. But the wrongdoers among them substituted words other than those given tothem, so We sent down on the wrongdoers a plague from heaven, because of theirwicked behavior.52.60.51.Then We pardoned you after that, sothat you might be grateful. And recall when Moses prayed for water for his people. We said, “Strike therock with your staff.” Thereupon twelvesprings gushed out from it, and each triberecognized its drinking-place. “Eat anddrink from God’s provision, and do notcorrupt the earth with disobedience.”53.And recall that We gave Moses theScripture and the Criterion, so that youmay be guided.54.And recall that Moses said to his people, “O my people, you have done wrongto yourselves by worshiping the calf. Sorepent to your Maker, and kill your egos. That would be better for you with yourMaker.” So He turned to you in repent-61.And recall when you said, “O Moses,we cannot endure one kind of food, so callto your Lord to produce for us of what theearth grows: of its herbs, and its cucumbers, and its garlic, and its lentils, and its4

Go down to Egypt, where you will have what you asked for.”They were struck with humiliation andpoverty, and incurred wrath from God.That was because they rejected God’s revelations and wrongfully killed the prophets. That was because they disobeyed andtransgressed. They said, “Call upon your Lord toshow us which one.” He said, “He says sheis a heifer, neither too old, nor too young, but in between. So do what you are commanded.”69.They said, “Call upon your Lord toshow us what her color is.” He said, “Hesays she is a yellow heifer, bright in color, pleasing to the beholders.”62.Those who believe, and those who areJewish, and the Christians, and the Sabeans—any who believe in God and the LastDay, and act righteously—will have theirreward with their Lord—they have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.70.They said, “Call upon your Lord toshow us which one; the heifers look aliketo us, and God willing, we will be guided.”71.He said, “He says she is a heifer, neitheryoked to plow the earth, nor to irrigate thefield—sound without blemish.” They said,“Now you have brought the truth.” Sothey slew her—though they almost didnot.63.And recall when We received a pledgefrom you, and raised the Mount aboveyou: “Take what We have given you earnestly, and remember what is in it, thatyou may attain righteousness.”72.And recall when you killed a person, and disputed in the matter—but God wasto expose what you were hiding.64.But after that you turned away. Were itnot for God’s grace and mercy towardsyou, you would have been among the losers.73.We said, “Strike him with part of it.”Thus God brings the dead to life; and Heshows you His signs, that you may understand.65.And you surely knew those of you whoviolated the Sabbath. We said to them, “Bedespicable apes!”74.Then after that your hearts hardened. They were as rocks, or even harder. Forthere are some rocks from which riversgush out, and others that splinter and water comes out from them, and others thatsink in awe of God. God is not unaware ofwhat you do.66.Thus We made it a deterrent for theirgeneration, and for subsequent generations, and a lesson for the righteous.67.And recall when Moses said to his people, “God commands you to sacrifice aheifer.” They said, “Do you make a mockery of us?” He said, “God forbid that Ishould be so ignorant.”75.Do you hope that they will believe inyou, when some of them used to hear the5

2. THE HEIFER (al-Baqarah)83.Word of God, and then deliberately distort it, even after understanding it?We made a covenant with the Childrenof Israel: “Worship none but God; and begood to parents, and relatives, and orphans, and the needy; and speak nicely topeople; and pray regularly, and give alms.”Then you turned away, except for a few ofyou, recanting.76.And when they come across those whobelieve, they say, “We believe,” but whenthey come together privately, they say,“Will you inform them of what God hasdisclosed to you, so that they might dispute with you concerning it before yourLord?” Do you not understand?84.And We made a covenant with you:“You shall not shed the blood of yourown, nor shall you evict your own fromyour homes.” You agreed, and were allwitnesses.77.Do they not know that God knowswhat they conceal and what they reveal?78.And among them are uneducated whoknow the Scripture only through hearsay, and they only speculate.85.But here you are, killing your own, andexpelling a group of your own from theirhomes—conspiring against them inwrongdoing and hostility. And if theycome to you as captives, you ransomthem, although it was forbidden to you. Isit that you believe in part of the Scripture, and disbelieve in part? What is the rewardfor those among you who do that but humiliation in this life? And on the Day ofResurrection, they will be assigned to themost severe torment. God is not unawareof what you do.79.So woe to those who write the Scripturewith their own hands, and then say, “Thisis from God,” that they may exchange itfor a little price. Woe to them for whattheir hands have written, and woe to themfor what they earn.80.And they say, “The Fire will not touchus except for a number of days.” Say,“Have you received a promise from God—God never breaks His promise—or areyou saying about God what you do notknow?”86.Those are they who bought the presentlife for the Hereafter, so the punishmentwill not be lightened for them, nor willthey be helped.81.Indeed, whoever commits misdeeds, and becomes besieged by his iniquities—these are the inmates of the Fire, whereinthey will dwell forever.87.We gave Moses the Scripture, and senta succession of messengers after him. AndWe gave Jesus son of Mary the clearproofs, and We supported him with theHoly Spirit. Is it that whenever a messenger comes to you with anything your souls82.As for those who believe and do righteous deeds—these are the inhabitants ofParadise, wherein they will dwell forever.6

THE HEIFER (al-Baqarah)do not desire, you grew arrogant, callingsome impostors, and killing others?love of the calf because of their disbelief.Say, “Wretched is what your faith commands you to do, if you are believers.”88.And they said, “Our hearts are sealed.”Rather, God has cursed them for their ingratitude. They have little faith.94.Say, “If the Final Home with God isyours alone, to the exclusion of all otherpe
