New VarietyLOOKBOOK2021 REPORT

New VarietyLOOKBOOKIntroductionEach year EHR produces a California Spring Trials report, highlighting all the introductions we encounter as we travel downthe coast of Cali. The past 18 months have had many challengesand changes due to the pandemic. The ability to see all the CASTplant introductions in a one week span was not possible for ourentire team. Luckily, not all changes are bad. We have spent thelast year meeting with breeders and seeing new plant varietiesat trials on a more intimate scale. It also means that the scope ofthis report is no longer limited to what we see on the coast, sowe’ll be highlighting any new introductions that may have beenreleased after CAST 2021.We’re starting a new tradition, welcome! The photographs in this book are used with permission from the designatedbreeder for each variety. All photos are copyrighted and property of the breeder,no distribution is permitted.

AchilleaMARSHMALLOW Leave it to us to startthe ‘new annuals’ book with aperennial, but we couldn’t misshighlighting this debut. This introis a super tough perennial thatblooms the first year. Massesof double flowers look a littlelike gypsophila, but are muchmore weather tolerant, andeasy to grow. Marshmallow hasa short grow time and uniformfinish. With versatility to offer, this could be used in multipleplanting types. Available inBeGreen pellet.BENARYAgn eloniaANGELFACE CASCADE SNOW Thecascading habit of this newAngelface Angelonia isperfectly suited for hangingbaskets and combinations. Theplants have height on the top ofthe pot, but then cascade overthe edge as well. In containersit will function as both a fillerand spiller. Their heat tolerancemakes them an excellentchoice for gardeners who live inclimates with hot summers. Don’tforget that Angelface are greatlong lasting cut flowers with aslight grape soda fragrance.PROVEN WINNERSAgn eloniaSERAFINA SERIESW E S T H O F F The AngeloniaSerafina series debuts with largeflowers and heavy branchingto boast! It also features heatand drought tolerance. Plantsstart with a distinct, uprighthabit, but will mature into a full, lush upright-mounding plant.Excellent as the centerpiece ina combination planting or in thelandscape. Seven colors in theseries, reaching about 18-24”h x12-18”w.

BegoniaVIKING EXPLORERSERIESS A K ATA A new ‘Viking’ has enteredthe scene. This new series shares thesame notes from the breeder as theirclassic ‘Viking’ series, “all-weatherresistant” and “great for landscapesand containers.” However, ‘VikingExplorer’ varieties have a trailing habitreaching a width of 35-39” - a near 10”difference over Sakata’s other series. This makes it a superb choice forhanging baskets as well. Starting outin the series we have ‘Red on Green’and ‘Rose on Green’ but we suspectother colors may join the lineup. Ourperspective is that this a growerfriendly spreading begonia for baskets. While Dragon Wing varieties will stillbe a classic choice, the 10-14 dayearlier bloom time and more compacthabit will make this a fan favorite inthe greenhouse and ultimately in thegarden.BasilEVERLEAFTHAI TOWERSPA N A M E R I C A N S E E D “Towering3over other basils” they say, and perhapsthey are right. Pictured above, PanAmerican even compares ‘Thai Towers’(center) to their ‘Emerald Towers’ (left)and ‘Genovese’ (right). Sure the flavor isrich and takes any Pad Thai dish to thenext level, but the ultimate perk is forthe growers. ‘Thai Towers’ holds a tidyshape and doesn’t flower quickly, andalso solves the age-long issue of basilstretching and splitting open. Additionallythe purple stems complement thepristine habit for a sharp retail display.BegoniaI’CONIA SCENTIMENTPEACHY KEEND U M M E N O R A N G E The peachiestpick in this book, no doubt! TheScentiment lineup is a whole newspectrum for the I’Conia family. ‘PeachyKeen’ debuts under the lineup to kickoffthe improved Scentiment series over theprior series. EHR saw this in many of thetrials this year, showing off tremendousgarden and container performance. Aspictured here, it was hard to miss overthe bi-color, multi-blooms that give offan abundantly fresh, summery fragrance.N E W VAR IET IES LO O KBO O K 2021 RE PO RTBegonia rexSHADOW KING ROSE,LEMON LOVE, LIME RICKYG R E E N F U S E Quickly becomingone of our favorite rex series, ShadowKing’s compact habit is perfect for smallcontainer production with a big impact. This is a true series breeding programwith consistent, uniform finishing acrossthe varieties. We can expect even betteravailability from this series, as thesevarieties produce more leaves over otherrex varieties. Joining the series are threenew varieties, Rose, Lime Ricky, andLemon Love (our top pick). Lemon Loveis a #1 seller in Europe, popularized forthe great yellow foliage.

Rise Up Harlequin is coveredin bright bi-color blooms in shadesof orange and scarlet. Plant this in abasket or pot for a warm explosionof color. The Rise Up collection ofgarden begonias are recognized bythe exceptional branching, followed byunstoppable flower power in both sunand shade. These begonias have anabundance of medium sized flowersthat stay facing upright in the gardenfor maximum color impact.BeGreen is a seed treatmentdeveloped by Benary, that is freeof chemicals and microplastics.Benary created a sustainable methodof chemical free priming for ecofriendly production. This effort bringsa greener benefit to not only theirproduction, but the end product forgrowers and consumers.BegoniaNONSTOP RED, ORANGE, MIXB E N A R Y Three new vibrant colorsjoin this series of semi-trailingbegonias from Benary! Nonstop Joy varieties are more vigorous thanthe Nonstop series, making theman ideal choice for hanging baskets.Well-branched in habit also makes thisseries easy to ship. ‘Rose Picotee’ hasa bright pink bi-color appearance, butour favorites are the ‘Orange’ and ‘Red’both intense in color and bloomingpower. Snag all 5 colors in the serieswith the new ‘Mix’ option as well. While this initiative helps toprotect the environment, it alsohas provided ample germinationrates and uniformity.
