CoverStoryNeuroendovascularSurgeon Talks With MembersIn mid-December, the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce helda “Member Brief ” at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicinewith Dr. John Michael Whapham, the regions only fellowship trainedneuroendovascular surgeon.Over 100 individuals attended the breakfast event to learn aboutneuroendovascular and the importance of having this service available inour area. The DACC also welcomed students from the Houston CountyCareer Academy, who are enrolled in the bio-medical science program, tojoin members at the event.Neuroendovascular surgery is an innovative, minimally-invasivesurgical treatment for complex brain and spinal cord vascular diseasesthat is performed from inside the blood vessels. The Southeast AlabamaMedical Center offers the region’s only neuroendovascular surgicalservices.A Detroit and Chicago native, Dr. Whapham received his undergraduatedegree in biology and pre-med at the University of Notre Dame, whichled him to a master’s degree in cellular and clinical neurobiology beforeattending medical school at Wayne State University. He was subsequentlytrained in general neurology with residency in general neurology,vascular neurology and neuro critical care and then went on to completefellowships in neuro-endovascular surgery and angiography.Dr. Whapham comes to us from the Midwest in hopes to set up a largerendovascular program in this region allied with some of the new elementsin the program, including Wiregrass LifeFlight and expanding theoutreach in the area already established with the doctors at NeuroSpine.At the briefing, Dr. Whapham discussed the latest advancements inneuroendovascular surgery and aneurysm procedures available at theSoutheast Alabama Medical Center. He also highlighted some informationon “What is neuroendovascular surgery,” Acute thrombectomy, acutestroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage treatment, as well as discussingdelays in care with these patients.The new advances in imaging only available at SAMC, as well aschanges to infrastructure at the hospital to better serve the community,were also discussed. In closing, Dr. Whapham talked about the advancesin medicine and the presence of tele-medical services.A great discussion took place between Dr. Whapham and Chambermembers during the question and answer session.
