FINANCIAL PLANNING CERTIFICATE PROGRAMAt DePaul, you’ll gain the knowledge you need—as well as the certification that’s respected in themarketplace—to succeed in the growing field of financial planning. Certification gives you the credentialsyou need, whether you want to break into the profession or advance in your current career. DePaul’sFinancial Planning Certificate program is the longest-running, board-certified financial planning programin the Chicago area. Since 1999, DePaul’s program has been widely recognized as an assurance of skillsin financial planning—skills that clients and companies seek. A rigorous curriculum—taught by expertpractitioners and instructors—covers the many different facets of financial planning, including insurance,investments, income tax, retirement and employee benefits, and estate planning.WHO SHOULD ATTENDThis program is right for anyone pursuingthe Certified Financial Planner certification, including professionals whoare in the fields of investment brokerage,insurance, banking, accounting and law.Through a rigorous course of study, you’llbe prepared to take the CFP CertificationExamination. The Certified FinancialPlanner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFPBoard) requires individuals to have anundergraduate degree before claimingCFP certification. Therefore, we stronglyrecommend that students have a four-yeardegree before enrolling in the program.HOW YOU WILL BENEFITExceptional instructors. Our facultymembers have extensive professionalexperience; each instructor has eitherCFP certification or another appropriateprofessional designation. The programfollows the topics recommended by CFPBoard as a framework for all courses,with instructors providing additionalexercises, case studies and handouts.The result is a series of courses combiningsound financial planning theory andpractical skill development.Convenient Loop campus location andscheduling. The six required modules areoffered on weeknights at DePaul’s Loopcampus as well as in an online format ona quarterly schedule. Each module runs 11weeks. Average completion time for theprogram is 18 months.Flexible payment options. Pay as yougo. You are not required to financiallycommit to the entire program. Also,a company deferral payment option isavailable to those participants witha tuition reimbursement plan throughtheir employers.Proven success. Graduates of this programconsistently outperform the nationalaverage for first-time test takers of theCFP Certification Examination. PROGRAM LOGISTICSTransfer Policy. Course work from anotherRequirements for Certification.CFP Board-registered program may beeligible for transfer. Requests (includingthe course description from the otherschool’s catalog and an official transcript)must be made in writing. To earncertification from DePaul, students mustcomplete more than 50 percent of theircourse work in DePaul’s program.The DePaul program provides onlythe educational component for CFP Certification. Topics covered include the financialplanning process, CFP Board’s code ofethics and professional responsibility,budgeting, financial institutions, clientbehavior and financial planning for specialcircumstances. In addition, you’ll gain athorough understanding of insurance basics,a broad range of insurance types and riskmanagement strategies.Investment PlanningThis course introduces you to basicinvestment concepts and focuses on clientneeds and assessments, particularly as theyrelate to risk tolerance and exposure. Topicsinclude investment vehicles and strategies,measures of investment risks and returns,valuation concepts and methods, portfoliomanagement and diversification, assetallocation, pricing models, hedging and optionstrategies, tax-efficient investing and others.Income Tax PlanningEstate PlanningTaxes play a big role in financial planning,and in this course you’ll gain an overviewof the federal tax system, includingconcepts of personal and businesstaxation. Topics include tax compliance,income tax fundamentals and calculations,tax accounting methods, charitablecontributions and deductions.The fifth required course is an introductionto estate planning challenges, techniquesand taxation. Topics include estateplanning documents, gifting strategiesand taxation, incapacity planning, estatetax calculation and compliance.Retirement Planning andEmployee BenefitsMany clients seek the help of financialplanners in preparing for retirement,whether for themselves or their employees.You’ll learn about planning alternatives,including qualified and non-qualifiedretirement plans and social security.
