TimeSlips is a story-tellingprocess that encourages the creativity of residents who have Alzheimer’s or other related dementia. TheTimeSlips program was conceived in 1998 by Anne Basting, PhD, and has resulted in thousands ofstories that have touched the lives of older adults and have offered a communication opportunity thatenhances meaningful connections.TimeSlips encourages people with memory loss to exercise their imaginations and originality. Thistechnique is a shift away from the traditional method of focusing on memory and reminiscence, whichcan be uncomfortable and stressful for people with dementia. TimeSlips is especially effective in settingssuch as MCH’s Health and Rehabilitation Center, which offers a variety of services and programs, suchas assisted living, skilled nursing and intergenerational groups. In the TimeSlips process, facilitators askopen-ended questions about a thoughtprovoking image and incorporate allresponses into a story. Storytelling sessionscan last up to an hour, and typically involve6-12 people with memory loss. The processworks well with groups of people at all levelsof cognitive challenge, with one or severalleaders guiding the sessions. We have foundTimeSlips to be an excellent way to facilitatemeaningful interactions among residents.Bridget McNair and Genevieve Laubach.7Volume 13, Issue 1, Winter 2007
