JHS PTSAPTSA MembershipEach of the past several years we have had approximately 2,200 students enrolled at JHS. Yet over the past couple of years we have only averaged 500 PTA members. This means less than 25% of our students have PTA members representing them when we vote at Washington StatePTA Convention and Legislative Assembly and speak in front of public officials about matters that directly affect our JHS students and families. For example: Cedar Wood Elementary PTA already has over 400 PTA members for this year representing well over 50% of the school’s studentpopulation.Let’s have this year be the year we break the 25% mark. This means we need at least 550 members. This should be easy since students can jointoo for 8.50. Two adults can join together for 26 (do not have to live in the same household) rather than 16 for each individual membership. We currently have 429 members, so only 121 to go! Students, remind your teachers to join or buy them a membership as a sign of appreciationrather than getting them a box of chocolates. Showing your PTA membership card at local businesses can score you some great deals, like 10%off at Skinny Ds and Thai Bistro. There are also great statewide discounts and ember-benefits/We can do this! Show your pride in the pack and join today! (Membership scholarships are available upon request.)Thank you!Laura Peterson, VP MembershipLink to online membership (small processing fee for online): nk to membership form to print and mail to JHS with /2/7002560/summer fall 2018-2019 membership form.pdfJHS PTSA Membership Meetings: Mark Your CalendarEveryone is invited to attend the PTSA membership meetings listed below. Any donations throughout the year are appreciated! Here is a little more information on the support Alyssa provides to our students. “I have the distinct privilege of serving the unique needs of ourstudents and families at Jackson. I keep toiletries, some clothing, shoes, and snacks on hand for anyone who may have a need. Addressing immediate requests is a great joy of the job; however, I need your help! Students whose families struggle financially often don’t have much to eatduring the day—and our teens are HUNGRY!” Thank you, AlyssaNon-Perishable Items Needed:Granola and protein bars (all kinds)Juice boxesString cheeseDried or squeeze fruitTrail mixCereal barsFruit snacksGluten-free snacksWater bottles (to fill at filtered water station)Beef jerkeySingle-serve ramen, soupsMac ‘n’ cheeseCrackers (including cheese/cracker snacks and peanut butter/cracker snacks)Veggie crispsPTSA AdvocacyLegislative Assembly, Advocacy Guide, and Legislative SurveyPTA leaders from across the State spend one weekend each year focusing on advocacy issues. In even numbered years, like this one, they voteon a new platform of issues to support in Olympia. For example, last year the State representatives signed into law “Breakfast After the Bell.”Washington State PTA has been behind this issue for the past four years. Passage of this law allows students to collect their breakfast from thecafeteria and take it to their classroom instead of needing to get to school early enough to eat breakfast in the cafeteria. This year, WSPTAleaders will be learning about 12 new issues that will make up the advocacy platform for the next two years. Some of the key issues includeschool safety, recess, funding for paraeducator training, the statewide teacher shortage, vaping, and simple majority for bonds. Leaders will alsovote on new Principles and Resolutions that drive long-term advocacy for the WSPTA.Representatives from HM Jackson PTSA would like feedback from PTSA members to help them choose the issues of greatest importance forour community. We are asking members to read through the “2018 WSPTA Guide to Proposed Legislative Principles, Legislative Issues, andResolutions” found here: Advocacy Guide (Link to Advocacy NAL.pdf)After reviewing the Advocacy Guide, please take this short nd-resolutions-surveySurvey results will be collected until October 15, 2018. Counselor CornerJHS Families Are Cordially Invited to Attend High School & BeyondFamily Night on Tuesday, October 9, 2018History: High School & Beyond Family Night was developed at JHS at the turn of the century. We are excited tosee its growth across the district and look forward to seeing our families attend again on October 9, 2018. The highschool portion is very different from the elementary and middle school portion of the night. The evening kicks offwith an outstanding College & Career Fair—where families can gather information about potential post-high schooloptions. After the fair, high school families are able to attend two breakout sessions that best fit their student’s high school and post-highschool goals. If a high school family attends every year, the family will have the opportunity to attend 8 of the approximately 12 breakoutsessions offered. Because of this, we recommend you use the “recommended grade level” notation as you pick sessions to attend.Event: High School & Beyond Family NightWhen: Wednesday, October 9, 2018Schedule for HIGH SCHOOL Families:5:00–6:00 p.m.Free Hot Dog Dinner5:30–6:30 p.m.College & Career Fair (JHS Gym)6:30–6:40 p.m.Walk to breakout sessions in upstairs JHS Classrooms, Commons, and Library6:40–7:30 p.m.Session A (40 minutes of info, 10 minutes Q & A)7:35–8:25 p.m.Session B (40 minutes of info, 10 minutes Q & A)12th grade families—Congratulations on entering senior year!
