OUR MISSIONThe Mission of Caroline Center is to enable unemployed and underemployed women in Baltimore City to find employment in a careerwith potential for advancement, thus creating a future of hope forthemselves and their families.

FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR& EXECUTIVE DIRECTORGiving DirectionDear Friends of Caroline Center,There is a poem by the poet Mary Oliver that we read to each classof women on their first day at Caroline Center. It is called TheJourney, and it describes the choice each woman makes when shesets her feet to the Caroline Center path:”It was already lateenough and the road full of fallenbranches and stones.” but,“you strode deeper and deeperinto the world .determined to savethe only life you could save.”We stand in awe of these women whose determination overcomes tremendous odds to complete the 15 week program that weoffer. And we feel their pride when they not only reach their goalbut exceed it. In some ways the past year had a few fallen branches and stones in our path as an organization as well, as we experienced the effects of the economy. But as we stayed the course, a fewother paths opened up to us and we were able to access federalstimulus funding allocated for workforce development. Thisannual report tells both stories –that of the women and that ofCaroline Center – and illumines the blessings that come when wechoose the road that we believe can make all the difference. Thanks to you, our faithful donors, we are able to walk a lesstraveled road with women who are unafraid to walk it with us. Thesuccess of each woman here is in some way your success as well; wethank you for your support this past year.Sincerely,“It’s difficult to overrate theimportance of giving peoplea second chance. It’s so hardfor a person to be somethingthey’ve never seen. Thereare people who need newbeginnings everywhere.” BILL CLINTON“Giving: How Each of UsCan Change the World”Miriam Jansen, SSNDChair, Board of TrusteesPatricia McLaughlin, SSNDExecutive Director

C A R O L I N E C E N T E R G R A D U AT E S T O R YA Difficult JourneyIn spite of not being able to graduate with herclass, Teresa made two admirable and unusualchoices at this fork in the road in her life. Firstof all, she decided not to give up. Teresa asked ifshe could come back to Caroline Center for thenext session and try again. Secondly, in spite ofher overwhelming disappointment at not graduating with her class, Teresa attended their graduation ceremony with a smile on her face andclapped the loudest as her friends’ names wereannounced and they received their certificates.Teresa once again enrolled at CarolineCenter. This time around, she said, “I had a realmotivation to make it. These people really caredabout me-they let me come back and try again.Miss Jan and Sister Agnese treated me like I wasone of their own family members.” Teresareflected on her attitude issues in the past andsaid, “I have really worked on my attitude, it’snot perfect, but I am really trying to be moreopen to others and show that in my face.”Teresa graduated as a Certified NursingAssistant. She walked with pride with a newclass of friends and gratitude in her heart for allthat Caroline Center has done for her.Roadblocks and detours in life can sometimesbring with them resolve to choose a road lesstraveled. Sometimes someone can find thestrength to shake off disappointment and tryagain, and still feel happiness for others who area little bit ahead of you on the road that leads toa new life and fulfillment.Teresa has workedhard for many yearsat a variety of jobsto help support hersiblings and herown children. Herexperiences includeworking at Wendy’s, working at a gas station asa cashier, and eventually Teresa worked at anassisted living facility where she realized that shereally enjoyed caring for the elderly. So whenher cousin told her about Caroline Center andthe opportunity for training and certification asa Certified/Geriatric Nursing Assistant, Teresadecided to choose this road and enrolled atCaroline Center. Teresa struggled with manyissues. She says, “I had so many sad things happen to me over so many years, I couldn’t focus.I really needed to talk to someone about it all.The counseling offered was something new forme and I just had to let things out and take theweight off my mind.” Teresa admittedly also“Thank you to all the Caroline Center Team for accepting me notonce but twice into the program. I love everyone at Caroline Centerbecause you are so wonderful and have shown me such support.”struggled with her attitude and her ability toconcentrate on her skills training. She completed most of the 15 week program but couldn’tget her grades high enough to graduate.12
