Public Safety Department Security UpdatesHurley Medical Center is about to embark on a new project to replace theold access control system. The new system is called Premisys, which willallow Smart Card Readers to be used with this new network. The old systemusing barcode readers will be phased out. Having the new system meansthat everyone at Hurley will have to be rebadged, which includes retakingeveryone’s picture. The new ID card will be able to use both systems, andwill allow more flexibility as the system changes over.Along with new badges, a new color code will be used to help identifycertain areas and will easily identify contractors, volunteers and students.The color-coded system will be pink for Labor and Delivery and Pediatrics,light green for Physicians, light blue for ER, yellow for volunteers, orange forcontractors, light purple for students, and no color for general staff.The rebadging and system switch over will be coordinated with the openingof the new ED. A plan is being developed to coordinate rebadging for ourphysicians and will be communicated when in place. Please pardon anyinconvenience, as this change over will help move the hospital forward withthe latest technology possible. The 4000 workshop is free to Naraparaju,who is expected to generate improvement plans for asthma care throughoutthe 6-month program.The professional development program is led by the South Bronx AsthmaPartnership and the National Asthma Control Initiative. It targets early-careerpediatricians who: Have served as an attending pediatrician in any ACGME*-accreditedresidency training program with an academic appointment 7 years. Plan to continue as a faculty member in a residency training program for atleast two more years. Have demonstrated leadership potential in promoting quality patient care. Want to actively help the future health care system to succeed.The development program is especially designed to help those who servegeographical locations with the greatest need, such as the Flint area with its highprevalence of childhood asthma and Hurley as a community safety-net hospital.While Hurley provides excellent care to residents in many surrounding counties,disparate asthma outcomes still exist, primarily distinguished by geographicallocation and socioeconomic status. So, for example, children in neighborhoodsaround the hospital may fare worse than children in more affluent locations. Midland Family Lose600 Pounds, Star inHurley Bariatric TVCommercialOn July 29, 2011, a special family was tapedfor an upcoming Hurley Bariatric televisioncommercial. Breastfeeding Advocateof the YearThe Genesee County Breastfeeding Coalition is pleasedto announce the recipient of the 2011 Genesee CountyBreastfeeding Advocate of the Year is Dr. Epifania Aranas.Selection of the Breastfeeding Advocate of the Year was basedon the following criteria: the person is clear in his/her supportof breastfeeding; he/she supports women to breastfeedthrough encouragement, accurate and timely information,advice, reassurance, affirmation, hands-on assistance andpractical tips; and he/she reinforces the practice and supportof breastfeeding with colleagues.Epifania Aranas, MDDr. Aranas was nominated by a colleague at Hurley MedicalCenter. The nomination submitted for Dr. Aranas describedher as “ [being] very instrumental in formulating policies andprocedures to improve breastfeeding rates and breastfeedingsupport for our most vulnerable population in the NICU. Dr.Aranas encourages nursing staff to promote practices to improvebreastfeeding success, and supports families during a very stressfultime in their lives. She encourages every mother to breastfeed orprovide breastmilk for their infant She promotes breastmilk as theoptimum source of nutrition with the goal of improving the healthof women and their infants.
