Once the donuts arrived withLarry Lee things started picking up,including everyone’s sugar level.Mike Dawson and Beamin ScottAllison arrived pretty early fromKansas City, with the OklahomaCity group filtering in a little later. Not much was on the schedule, but a couple of Corvairs wereput on the lift to check out someoil leaks. Bernie Strecker broughtin an EM coupe to check out whyit wasn’t charging. Once AeronedMadsen broke out a Uni-Synand started tuning up carbs andepidemic occurred. Soon Ned wasadjusting carbs, Mike Dawson wasadjusting carbs and Scott was tuning also. The aroma of Chicken andnoodles plus Vegetable Beef Souppulled the workers away from thegas fumes. While lunch was inprogress the sound of the Sun dist.machine pulled several away fromthe tables as they took their soupbowls into the back shop to learnhow the Sun machine worked.A short ceremony afterlunch honored recently passedlong-time MCCA member, MelHorstman. The bench came from Mel’s estate andpreviously resided on the porch at Mel’s home.Doug and the rest of the Horstman familythought the bench should go to the Kalp shop.Terry picked up the bench and a brass plaquewith Mel and Mary’s names on it. Once at theshop Owen Strawn helped Terry use a routerto make a recessed spot in the top rail for thename tag. The bench was also treated to a refinishing while at the shop.During the Dedication ceremony Mel’sson, Doug and daughter-in-law Jean placedthe plaque on the bench and attached it withscrews. The bench will be a great reminder ofan outstanding gentleman.MCCA Corvairs have been getting a lot of attention from their owners recently. Mark Stever has beenenjoying taking apart the suspension on his Corvairproject, sandblasting and powder-coating the restoredparts. Mark plans to rebuild the mechanical parts ofhis Corvair, put it back together and drive it for a yearthe start of the body and interior work. The enginehas been rebuilt by Steve Goodman, the PowerGlidetransmission was refurbished by Mike Dawson.Larry Lee was on his second gallon of differential gear oil when he decided it was time to resealhis Corvair. His Corvair came to the Kalp shop andLarry began removing the power-train. Once it wasout and the engine split from the transaxle he foundthe flywheel, clutch and inside the bellhousing weredripping gear oil. With Mike Dawson’s “while youare there” list in his hand, Larry began cleaning andreplacing parts. The clutch disc was soaked in gear oil and although it had not started to slip or grab it was replacedby a new disc from Terry’s stash. The flywheel was anoriginal riveted unit that will fail eventually. Terry hada bolted flywheel that Duane Grimm had done yearsago. It had been taken to Dawson’s for checking forround and balancing. It passed so it went on Larry’sContinued on Page 7

New front and rear main seals, a new aluminumpan with gasket, plus rebuilding lower control armsand the convertible was going back together again.Owen Strawn has been gathering the parts to puthis Ultravan engine back together. After having problems getting anyone local to grind his crankshaft, onewas obtained with help of the Kansas City Club. Whenchecking bearing clearances, it was discovered that thetiming gear on the crank had be damaged when someone put too long bolts to hold on the flexplate. Theold gear had to be machined down in a lathe beforeit could be removed and replaced by United EngineSpecialists. Terry and Owen installed the timing gearon the cam. Glenn Ziesenis pressed the new pistonsonto the rods.Last Sunday Owen and Terry assembled the cam, crank, and block halves and setup to degree the cam, something neither of them had done before. The camchecked out fine and now Owen is ready to install thepistons and cylinders onto the block.November 8: Saturday November MCCAMeeting.
