But such was thecase in November 2019 when the New HampshireNurses Association’s (NHNA) membership amendedthe Association’s bylaws to allow for a virtual annualmembership business meeting. At that time no oneanticipated that a global pandemic would begin a fewmonths later which would necessitate holding the 2020annual membership business meeting via a Zoomconference. The first virtual Annual Membership Business Meetingwas held on the evening of October 7, 2020. Forty-twomembers and ten non-members tuned into the eventfrom their homes and offices. Carlene Ferrier, Presidentof NHNA, welcomed the attendees. December 2020, January, February 2021New Hampshire Nursing News Page 3REFLECTIONS FROM THE EDPamela P. DiNapoli PhD, RN,CNLReflectionshavebeendefined as thoughts andopinions that come to youwhile you are reflecting. As I begin my term asexecutive director of NHNAI am reminded of theimportance of reflecting.Reflecting gives you anopportunity to stop, thinkabout your past, thinkabout how events haveaffected your life and howPamela P. DiNapoliyou could have or wouldhave done things differently. The importance ofreflecting in my life has been magnified in 2020.My reflections this year are guided by the word“mindfulness.” In my personal life I am fortunate tohave some wonderful and supportive friends. OnNew Year’s Day while heading to a race, one friendsaid we should all pick a word that would guide usand calm us during the year. This was before Covid!I picked the word “mindfulness.” There are threecomponents to mindfulness and they are Attention,Intention and Attitude. As I practice mindfulnessI am reminded that the nurses of NH have beentested this year, physically and emotionally. Wordslike anxiety, anger, depression and loneliness havebecome everyday expressions of our feelings. Butif we take time in our daily lives to be mindful ofthe events in our lives we may learn to betterunderstand and reshape our feelings.I am mindful of the responsibility that has beengiven to me in accepting the role of the ED. I drawyour Attention to the Mission of the NHNA: “As aC/SNA of the ANA, the NHNA exists to promotenursing practice and the wellbeing of NH nursesby providing professional development, fosteringnurse innovation and leading in health advocacyto enhance the health of the people of NH.” Icome from a long career as a nurse educator andan important skill we teach students is the art ofreflective writing.Consistent with the missionof NHNA I encourage you to share your storiesas we continue to promote nursing practice inNew Hampshire. Nurses have been called heroesduring this pandemic, nurses were heroes beforeand continue to be heroes now more than ever.Without your stories and your voice our advocacyefforts will be silenced. As ED it is my Intentionto listen to your stories. Journaling is an importantway to maintain your emotional wellbeing, reflecton the events in your daily life and be mindful, acknowledge and accept your feelings. Share yourstories. Finally, it cannot go without saying thatnot only have we been tested by the pandemic thisyear, we have encountered events that have causeddivisiveness among us personally, politically andprofessionally. We must embrace the Attitudes thatare core to our professional values, those of beingkind, nonjudgmental and curious. Jon Kabat-Zinnsaid “Mindfulness means paying attention in aparticular way; on purpose, in the particular momentand nonjudgmentally.” I encourage you to make acommitment to be mindful as a way of improvingyour quality of life and wellbeing. Pay attention inthe moment, live with intention and let this shapeyour attitude and personal behaviors. As ED I willbe attentive, I intend to hear you and I am optimisticthat as a professional organization we have power.PRESIDENT’S MESSAGECarlene Ferrier, MPH, RN, NEA-BC, PresidentHappy New Year andanextendedYearofthe Nurse!Last yearbrought many challengesthat we could not haveimagined. Nurses and theNew Hampshire Nurses’Associationhaverisento the occasion. In thisissue of the Nursing Newsyou will read about theenormous efforts of nursevolunteers in keeping ourCarlene Ferrierlong term facilities safe. AYear in Review 2020 outlines how NHNA was ableto pivot to meet the needs of our members andstill end the year budget neutral, despite significantlosses in program revenue as we moved our eventsto virtual formats. Hopefully the after-action reviewlocally and nationally will clarify lessons learnedfrom this pandemic response and help be betterprepared for future public health emergencies. As we look to the future for nurses and NHNA,we are very excited about new opportunities andpossibilities! The Board of Directors completeda rigorous process to select our next ExecutiveDirector, Dr. Pamela DiNapoli. We closed out our2017-2020 Strategic Plan and will spend the first halfof 2021 drafting our 2021-2024 Strategic Plan. Keepan eye out for listening sessions and opportunitiesto help us create an intergenerational vision. Uponreflection I realize that the true measure of successof my presidency will not be visible until sometimein the future. One indicator will be when we haveseveral competent, qualified, candidates runningGeriatric PsychMed/Surgfor board, commission, and task force positions.Another will be when we are finally able to addressattrition, and our membership numbers steadily rise. The third indicator is the strength and success ofour affiliate, community, and national partnerships. To do this we need to widen the circle. Nursingand NHNA membership should reflect thepopulation of the patients we serve. In closing, I am thrilled to welcome HollyMcCormack, MSN, RN, joining the NHNA Boardof
