bioMérieux C O N N E C T I O NAP R I L 20 0 8 VO L 5 N O 2Message from bioMérieuxWelcome to the April 2008 issue of the bioMérieux Connection newsletter. In this issue, we arehighlighting the upcoming 108th American Society for Microbiology (ASM) annual meeting in June.and General Manager, bioMérieux North AmericaIn past issues of the Connection Newsletter, wediscussed the skilled-labor issue in U.S.-based labs. While this issue is still valid, we are also seeing somelevel of lab consolidation to improve efficiency andcost effectiveness. Consolidation and the demand forimproved efficiency will drive automation. Microbiologylabs historically have not had the same level ofautomation as Chemistry or other labs, which is why ourcurrent focus zeroes in on bringing full automation to themicrobiology lab.bioMérieux’s theme for ASM 2008 is Full MicrobiologyLab Automation: Delivering the Future. The moreautomated microbiology laboratories can become, thebetter. Today’s microbiologist is expected to do morework, faster, to increase profitability. We are committedto delivering automated solutions at the pre-analytical,analytical and informatics stages to streamline processeswhile delivering accurate results. As you will see in thisissue, we will be launching many new solutions at ASMthat support this effort. A fully automated microbiologylab will better serve the patient, as well as be costeffective for your institution.Join us at ASM 2008 to learn more about taking yourmicrobiology lab to full automation. We look forwardto seeing you at our annual customer appreciationevent – held this year at Fenway Park, the home of theBoston Red Sox. We also plan to refocus our 30th AnnualMicrobiology User Group event. Hosted by key industryleaders, this year’s event will focus on ID/AST, bloodculture and new, pre-analytical solutions. ASM is animportant show for our community, and we look forwardto seeing you there. zSincerely,Herb StewardIN THIS ISSUEasM 2008BooTh IonParTY2from diagnosis, the seeds of better healthasM 2008 PreviewCustomer Appreciation Party, BUGClub, Knowledge Forums, and more467Product Spotlight:Automated InstrumentsbioMérieuxodysseyNew bioMérieuxTechnical Library81112worksafe campaignBacteria Road TripCompany NewsPrinted on recycled paper.Herb StewardExecutive Vice President

An eveninghosted by key industry notables will provide you theopportunity to learn about antibiotic overuse, rapidresults and the trends in lab automation.Reducing the emergence andspread of drug-resistant organismscontinues to pose a major challengeto clinical laboratories today. To helpcombat these emerging diseasethreats, bioMérieux established theBORIS (bioMérieux Organism Resistance InitiativeSurveillance) network to collect and study drugresistant organisms from participating U.S. clinicallaboratories. In collaboration with our networklaboratories, we will present two posters oforiginal research from BORIS at this year’s ASMGeneral Meeting in Boston.6:30-8:00 p.m. – Industry PanelBlane Schilling, Aspen Consulting – ModeratorGeorge Drusano, Ordway Research – The Lab’s Role inGetting Relevant Results Interpretable Data to the ClinicalSusan Foster, APUA – Economic Impact of the Overuseof Antibiotics, The Trends in Lab Automationadditional Posters at asMbioMérieux and Washington University School of Medicine(St. Louis, MO) will also be presenting two posters atASM. PRODUCTSbioMérieux and Wescor signed anagreement making bioMérieux theexclusive distributor of PREVI ColorGram for Wescor. With this OEM(original equipment manufacturer)agreement, bioMérieux bringsautomation to a new level inthe pre-analytic process with theunique slide staining technology,PREVI Color Gram.4Gram staining is a critical andmandatory test performed inthe microbiology laboratory. It is a preliminary step usedto differentiate Gram-positiveand Gram-negative bacteria. Acumbersome and long procedure, traditional Gram staining requirestechnical expertise, numerousmanual steps and therefore lacksreliability and reproducibility.Wescor’s automated spraytechnology saves time and enablesstandardization and accuracy ofresults. The addition of the Cytopro rotor to the slide stainers results ina cytocentrifugation with eight-slidecapacity. The innovative techniquealso improves laboratory workflowand generates significant savings forlaboratories of all sizes. The PREVI Color Gram will providethe following benefits: Produce slides that are dry andready to read Reduce reagent usage Create a cleaner environmentThe PREVI Color Gramcomplements a complete rangeof fully automated solutions forthe microbiology bench, withrecent innovations such as thePREVI Isola for PPM streakingand Sysmex UF-1000i forurinary screening.About Centrifugation, Gram andMycobacteria StainingProperly Gram-stainedpreparations can quickly give youconsiderable information that canbe applied immediately to patientcare. The Gram stain is particularlyuseful in the presumptivediagnosis of bacterial meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, bacteriuria, gonorrhea, and infections of thebrain, lung, abdomen, and wounds. The Cytopro Cytocentrifuge rotoruses centrifugal force and threeunique patented chamber designsto sediment cells onto the slide. With the standard volume (singleor dual) chambers, suspensionfluid is simultaneously absorbedinto the Cytopad absorption padas cells contact the microscopeslide. The recently introducedhigh volume Cytopro Magnum chamber is easy to use andalso retains the excess fluidfrom a suspended sample. zbioMérieux Launches PREVI Isola Automated Pre-PourMedia (PPM) StreakerLabTech Systems, an Australian health care equipmentand services company, and bioMérieux signed anexclusive worldwide license agreement for LabTechSystems’ automated pre-poured media (PPM) streaker,PREVI Isola. The fully automated pre-poured media (PPM) streakeris an innovative, patented robotic system for theautomation of routine agar plate processing undertakenin microbiology laboratories. This pre-analyticalphase still remains manual and time-consuming inmost laboratories worldwide. In the current trend oflaboratory concentration, there is strong demand forautomation that can standardize processes and providetraceability, timesaving and optimized workflow, as wellas improved safety. The PREVI Isola will offer: Greater number of isolated colonies Customer configured set-up and sort Easy management of bi-plates Accommodation of up to five different types of mediaat one timeLabTech Systems’ patented robotic instrument, whichprovides a solution at this early stage of the microbiologyprocess, has major synergies with bioMérieux’s prepoured media range. SPOTLIGHTIt is no secret that many hospitals are reaching criticallevels of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) andincreasing cases of sepsis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Nearly two million patients inthe United States get an infection in a hospital everyyear. Of these, nearly 90,000 people will die as aresult of the HAI.1 Healthcare officials are desperate forsolutions. Better safety practices and lab automationcan help reduce the spread of infection in hospitals.Last year, bioMérieux launched WorkSafe , an educationcampaign to provide labs and infection control personnelwith resources and educational materials to support bestpractices in blood culture
