Kenworth GreenKenworth and UPS Collaborate on DOE SuperTruck II ProgramKenworth is developing important advancements in Class8 truck aerodynamics, engine and powertrain efficiencies under the 40 million match-share SuperTruck IIprogram with the Vehicle Technologies Office of the U.S.Department of Energy (DOE). Goals for the programinclude the demonstration of a greater than 100 percentimprovement in freight efficiency* over 2009 equivalentproduct, and achieving 55 percent brake thermal engineefficiency using the industry-leading PACCAR MX engine.UPS deploys advanced technology to efficientlymanage the transportation of packages and freight. Forthe SuperTruck II project, UPS will provide guidance onits drive-and-duty cycles to optimize SuperTruck IIperformance. UPS will also offer advice on thecommercial feasibility and driver acceptance oftechnologies developed under SuperTruck II,” says MikeDozier, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vicepresident. “This important program is designed toproduce advancements that will benefit fleets and truckoperators with future reductions in fuel usage andemissions.”“The UPS collaboration with Kenworth is an opportunityto study cutting-edge technologies in our real-world truckapplications, expand the boundaries beyond what is pos-sible today, and further enhance performance and efficiency,” says Bill Brentar, UPS Director of Maintenanceand Engineering for Transportation Equipment at thecompany’s headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. “Thisinitiative will also help support UPS’s sustainabilitycommitment which targets a 12 percent reduction in itsabsolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from globalground operations by 2025.”PACCAR joins four other SuperTruck II teams workingto develop innovative technologies designed to morethan double the freight efficiency of Class 8 trucks. Theproject is subject to annual appropriations by Congress, which has been very supportive of the SuperTruck IIinitiative. Kenworth also is working closely with thePACCAR Technical Center and DAF Trucks NV (a subsidiary of PACCAR), Eaton, National Renewable EnergyLaboratory (NREL), and AVL. According to the DOE,trucks haul 80 percent of goods in the United Statesand use about 28 billion gallons of fuel per year. Thisaccounts for approximately 22 percent of totaltransportation energy usage and presents a significantopportunity to increase efficiency and reduce cost for akey segment of the nation’s transportation sector.Freight Efficiency is (Ton-Mile)/Gallon*Kenworth and Toyota Team with Port of Los Angeles Zero Emissions ProjectThrough the CaliforniaAir Resources Board’sZero Emission and NearZero-Emission FreightFacilities (ZANZEFF) grantprogram, the Port of LosAngeles-led “Shore toStore” project has beenconditionally awarded 41 million to develop 10zero-emission, hydrogenfuel-cell electric Class 8trucks on the KenworthT680 platform. The program — proposed with support from Kenworth,Toyota and Shell — also includes infrastructure development for hydrogen refueling to support operation ofheavy-duty vehicles along major drayage routes in theSouthern California area.Under the project, the 10 trucks will be developedthrough a collaboration between Kenworth and Toyotato move cargo from the Los Angeles ports throughout the Los Angeles basin. Shell will develop two, largecapacity heavy-duty hydrogen fueling stations. The initiative will reduce emissionsby an estimated 465 metrictons of greenhouse gas andother emissions annually.“This is an excellent opportunity for the Port of LosAngeles, Kenworth andToyota to work togetherto both explore and driveadvanced zero emissiontechnologies that may playa critical role in the cleantrucks of the future,” says Mike Dozier, Kenworth generalmanager and PACCAR vice president.“We are proud to team with the Port of Los Angeles,Kenworth and Shell and the operating partners toexplore the benefits of a true zero-emissions heavy-dutytruck platform and to support the development of aheavy-duty hydrogen fueling network in California,” saysToyota Motor North America Executive Vice PresidentBob Carter.World’s Best 5

Kenworth W990Own the Road:Kenworth Launches NewLong-Hood Conventional– The W990Kenworth continues its tradition of driver-focusedproduct development with the introduction of its newlong-hood conventional — the Kenworth W990. During amajor unveiling event at the Las Vegas Motor Speedwayin late September, a large audience of customers, dealersand press gathered to celebrate the launch of the newW990 with its traditional design that truly makes it TheDriver’s Truck .“The new Kenworth W990 is a reflection of the Kenworthbrand — The World’s Best — which represents the quality, engineering excellence, and both customer and driver focusthat goes into every Kenworth we build,” says Mike Dozier,Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president.“We are passionate about our products, our customersthat depend on them, and the drivers that operate them.We know that there are many customers and driversout there who share our passion. The Kenworth W990represents the pride, image and freedom of trucking, andcaptures the spirit of what trucking is all about.”The Kenworth W990 sets a powerful new industrystandard, and is designed to maximize performance inover-the-road and vocational operations. At 131.5 inchesfrom bumper to back-of-cab, the W990 establishes a boldpresence among conventional trucks. Available in day cab,40-inch flat top, and 52-inch and 76-inch mid-roof sleeperconfigurations, the W990 is standard with the proprietaryPACCAR Powertrain consisting of the PACCAR MX-13engine rated up to 510-hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque, a12-speed PACCAR automated transmission and PACCAR40K tandem rear axles.Kenworth’s W990: Behind the DesignFor the design team at Kenworth, designing a truck thattook in the heritage of the company’s iconic W900 modelis what Jonathan Duncan called a “once in a lifetimeopportunity as a designer.”As Kenworth’s design director, Duncan led the team thatcreated the new Kenworth W990, starting with a cleanslate to formulate ideas that blended tradition with thenew. “First and foremost, we wanted to design a truckthat had a significant ‘wow’ factor,” he says. “There isnothing like seeing a long-hood Kenworth driving down theroad, signifying image, pride and freedom. The long-hood6 World’s Bestconventional is the truck that gets noticed and commandsattention; it is the truck you see garnering best of showribbons at truck beauty shows across the country.“We set out to design a hard-working truck that sharesthose memories. One that can be seen down the roadand makes other truckers stare and nod their headsin appreciation. One that will be proudly displayed attruck shows. The Kenworth W990 features the latest intechnology, and is built on our 2.1-meter cab platform thatfeatures comfort and driver amenities that are second tonone,” Duncan says.According to Duncan, the Kenworth design team knewthat the new Kenworth W990 was going to have to makea strong statement and be authentic, genuine and uniquelyKenworth. “We also knew that the W990 had to be a truedriver’s truck — nothing less would do,” says Duncan. “Wewant drivers to take pause at the end of a hard day, lookover their shoulder, and admire their ride. We wanted toreward the driver with the smoothest ride, and sharpestlooking truck out there; a truck that will make other driversdo a double take. I couldn’t be happier with the results.”Long hood and stainless steel grilleThe two biggest visuals on the new Kenworth W990 are thehood and the grille. The “long hood” is 1.5 inches longerthan its cousin, the W900L.

Kenworth W990the driver’s seat. All of this creates a strong visual impactfrom behind the wheel.”Feeling good about the ride is one thing, adds Duncan, but “enjoying” the ride is another. “The interior of theW990 follows that of our flagship T680 with all theroom, dash layout and sleeper amenities,” says Duncan.“But we went one step further by designing the LimitedEdition interior package. We combined great colorschemes along with leather and embroidery. The LimitedEdition comes in classic midnight black with a glossyRavenwood trim. The diamond-trim panels on the doorpads, and in the sleeper, feature Royal Blue stitching andW990 embroidery. The heated and cooled leather seatshave perforated leather that is dyed blue on the backsideso that the edges of the perforations are blue. That’s asmall touch that drivers will notice every time they getinto the cab. We also added Royal Blue stitching on theleather Kenworth SmartWheel , another detail that onlythe driver will know about and a reminder that they’rebehind the wheel of something special.”“The grille is really the face of the new W990,” saysDuncan. “Incorporating stainless steel was important. Ithad to be pure Kenworth and it needed to be instantlyrecognizable as the top-of-the-line. We maintained thetraditional cathedral shape to the grille and the insetsurfaces at the top to give it a refined tailored look. Thatpowerful center spear signifies this is part of the newgeneration of Kenworth trucks and the tapered grille spearsare there for a classic touch. It’s elegant, beautiful, and fullof brawn.”The design team added a host of other design elements, including hood-side features that complement the stainlesssteel air intakes. “We paid close attention to the shapeof the reflection of the side air intakes in that hood sidesurface. In some colors, it can make the intakes look twiceas deep,” says Duncan.Knowing that the owners and drivers of the newKenworth W990 will want to add their own specialtouches, Duncan says a special effort was made to getPACCAR Parts involved early in the process. “We workedtogether to create aftermarket enhancements, like aspecial LED lighting package and stainless trim pieces,”he says. “We feel like the W990 driver is going to want tocustomize this truck to really be able to call it their own.Personally, I’m really looking forward to seeing what theyend up doing with them. I feel like we’ve given them agreat place to start.”See the beautifully designed and powerful W990 foryourself in a new video posted on Kenworth’s YouTubechannel: (www.youtube.com/KenworthTruckCo).The new W990 also starred in two road tours visiting20 Kenworth dealerships in the United States andCanada this fall. Check out the complete list of cities andKenworth dealerships here /w990-tour). Then, stop by and sitin the driver’s seat of a brand new Kenworth W990.Interior styling with attitudeWhile the truck certainly stands out, Duncan says thatinside, it conveys a special attitude as well. “Behind thewheel, the driver’s view over the hood is a huge part ofthe appeal of the W990. It’s really one of the keys to thesuccess of this design. The powerful wind-split (the raisedcenter section on the hood top) is designed to accentuatethe length of the hood and the dynamic shape reflects thepowerful engine underneath.
